I was doing a fun quiz in during a Mint Award ceremony in Mumbai, and A M Naik of L&T was to be felicitated with a Lifetime Achievement Award. So I gleefully pulled out my favourite L & T question, the one about the bridge in the epic film 'Bridge on the River Kwai.'
The bridge was built by Larsen & Toubro and the question was duly answered.
Afterwards, a senior L&T man came across and told me that there was more to the story. Apparently the producers of the film had not paid for the bridge which was actually built in Sri Lanka,
And so (spoiler alert) L&T refused to allow them to blow it up for the climax of the film.
Finally, after months of stalling L&T were paid and allowed the bridge to be blown. But the foundations were so strong that the explosive charges just did not work.
Finally, after trying quite a few times, they had to physically break more than half of the foundation with hammers and then blow it up again.
Cant think of a better product endorsement!

15th March. Exactly 2067 years to the day Julius Caesar was stabbed to death by fellow senators at the Curia of Pompey in Rome.
Here's a fascinating excerpt from Plutarch's Life Of Julius Caesar.
When Caesar was twenty five, he was captured by Cilician pirates. When they said they planned to demand a ransom of twenty talents, he told them they didn't know who they had captured and ordered them to demand fifty talents instead.
For thirty eight days, while his aide was raising the ransom, he joined in all their games and revelry, read out his poetry and speeches to them, and if they did not appreciate them enough, would jokingly threaten to have them killed when he was freed.

The Rupay Prime Volleyball league got over yesterday, and instead of the usual rah-rah post about what a great tournament we had, let me try and tell you why this is so special to me and quite a few others.
Players and coaches from 5 continents. The breakfast area was like a tower of babel, you could hear English, Hindi, Malayalam, Tamil, Kannada, Telugu Spanish, Persian and some Bengali and French. Yanks, Cameroonians, Cubans, Aussies, Iranians.... all having a blast together.
Players come first. When we couldn't find enough rooms in Bengaluru in one hotel, the players stayed in the better hotel! The league after party had no speeches, was first taken over by Cody, our California star who is a professional DJ, and then by Guru & our Tamil Brigade..

On this day, 91 years ago, 21 year old Bethune College student Bina Das stood up during the convocation and fired five shots at Bengal Governor Stanley Jackson. She was sentenced to nine years in prison.
In her words, '“I can assure all that I have no personal feeling against the governor, he is as good as my father, but as the Governor of Bengal he represents a system which has kept enslaved 300 million men and women of my country.”
Bina was released in 1939, joined the Congress and went back to jail during the Quit India movement before being released in 1945.

Birth anniversary of the first Indian Commander in Chief of the Indian army, Field Marshal K M Cariappa. Legendary officer with an impeccable service record, he is also remembered for one of the most epic speeches ever given by an Indian officer. This is the story.
Cariappa was a Coorg, and his command of Hindi was sketchy at the best of times. He had landed in a forward area in Naushera in January 1948, and was addressing the troops of the 50th Para Brigade, who were fighting a grim battle against a much larger force of militants.
The General decided that the best way to inspire the troops would be to speak in Hindi, and he basically translated what he would have said in English to Hindi.
More often than not, the translation was a bit off!

It's Steven Spielberg's 76th birthday. He was a young promising director in his late 20s when he was approached to make Jaws, an exciting prospect, but an absolute nightmare to make. In the days before top end graphics, how do you get a 20 foot great white shark to act for you?
They made three models of a mechanical shark, all named Bruce after Spielberg's lawyer, and hired a documentary crew to go to Australia and shoot footage of sharks, but how much could one use!
What Steven did was turn the problem on its head. In the 2 hour film, the 1st time that we actually see the shark is after 1 hour 21 mins. Till then, it's all shadows & shapes & threatening music. And the anticipation of seeing that shark is what made the film such a monster hit
