At 17, doctors convinced me that protruding labia minora were “unfeminine and embarrassing.”

I felt deep shame in response to false claims that this was caused by sex, masturbation, and male hormones published online and in medical journals.

But they are so pretty. 🥺
Until I saw doctors insulting my vulva, I never thought about whether it was pretty or not.

I checked to make sure my labia minora didn’t show in bike shorts and bikinis.

They just tucked up and protected me from camel toe. 😂

Beyond that, I didn’t think about it.
At 17, doctors convinced me the “ideal vulva” was one with everything hidden between the majora.

Now when I see vulvas where everything is hidden, I worry if something bad has happened to them.

I actually zoom in, looking for the clitoris, wondering if she okay. 🥺
Now, the big ones like this are my favorite.

I don’t even think my labia were this big.

I measured them. They were about 2.5 cm.

They never caused me any problems.

But to my doctor, they were “excess.”

They were “hypertrophic.”

He completely removed them. Image
19 years later, surgeons are still using shaming medical misinformation to market labiaplasty to women and girls.

I say “girls” because to me, teenagers are “girls,” not women,

I was barely 18, too young to know what was normal or not.

I’d never seen porn. I wish I had.
Not only did doctors sell genital cosmetic surgery with lies.

They also operated blind to basic anatomy for decades.

They misinformed about the role of the labia minora in sexual function.

They paid no mind to major nerves of the clitoris.

They denied risks.
I still don’t understand how, after 4 decades of this practice, women are still getting misled and mutilated.

Women are still attempting suicide after this.

This still is not considered criminal.

It’s not even considered medically negligent.

Lawyers don’t take these cases.
Why are people still silent?

Why don’t people stand up for the women and girls today who are getting mutilated and harmed?

I can change the textbooks, etc., but it’s not enough.

It’s not going to be enough until this is not acceptable to the medical community anymore!
At the ACOG Annual Meeting in 2018, OB/GYNs told me:

“I know everyone is doing labiaplasties, but they are not trained.”

“Women just shouldn’t be getting these surgeries.”

“OB/GYNs should not have to know clitoral nerves.”

“We have more important things to worry about.”

I just realized how different my life would be if we lived in a world where mutilation done by doctors was identified and reported.

I was 19 and within the statute of limitations when I went to @VanderbiltU student health with symptoms caused by my surgery.
I could have been told much earlier that it wasn’t my fault.

I could have known my loss of sexual function wasn’t in my head.

I could have sued my doctor, gotten justice.

Maybe I could have gotten help educating doctors way back in 2005.

Maybe I could have been repaired. ImageImage
In 2005, I was 19.

I was pre-med, majoring in Biomedical Engineering at Vanderbilt with a National Merit Scholarship.

What if I’d gotten help? 🥺

All these schools talk about diversity, equity, inclusion. Where is the equity here? Is it even better now?

Oh my gosh. 🥹

Thank you so much to @sama and everyone behind @OpenAI for making this a better vulvar anatomy resource than many medical journals, textbooks, and patient education resources.

The only problem is they are obviously not just “folds of skin”!!
The labia minora also play an obvious mechanical role in facilitating indirect clitoral stimulation during penetration.

Given how much men’s egos are tied to getting women to orgasm during penetration, male nerds should draw free body diagrams to understand how this works!!
Oh hell to the yes.

ChatGPT will call out doctors for spreading misinformation!! Image

The problem is the post op vulvas are made to meet a mostly cis male, culturally distorted conception of what a vulva looks like.

That they look like female genital mutilation should be considered insulting to ALL WOMEN, including trans women.
Think about it.

The clitoral body is the most taboo part of the vulva.

The reason why is because it makes the clitoris look like a phallus.

That’s why trans surgeons do not construct them!
The labia minora are the next most taboo part of the vulva.

Historically doctors amputated them to treat “excess sexual desire.”

Doctors today call prominent labia “unfeminine and embarrassing.”

Men still shame women for our sexuality based on the size.

I contacted the artist to ask if all of these vulvas were intact because I noticed some looked mutilated.

She told me “Some are trans post op surgery.”

I have a big problem with trans post ops being included in a “vulva diversity” video.

Here’s why. 🧵
The problem is most post op trans vulvas look like female genital mutilation.

It is much harder to find post op photos today than in the past, but in 2019, I wrote a Quora post explaining how surgeons do a very poor job making these outcomes look like intact female vulvas.
If we incorporate post op trans vulvas into a cultural conception of “normal female anatomy” what we are doing is normalizing vulvas that look mutilated.

I’m not trying to offend. I’m saying the cultural conception of a vulva needs do be that of an intact female vulva.

Why are you all following a man who is against the liberation of women and believes women are better off with FGM?

The clitoris is not vestigial.

It exists in all mammals and evolves separately from the penis.

It is the primary organ of female sexual response and is the most reliable route to orgasm for 96% of women.

Orgasm is critical for release of oxytocin, the pair bonding hormone.
Millions of women all over the world are mutilated on purpose.

Thousands of women are mutilated by accident even in the West.

Loss of clitoral function is devastating to the mental health of women.

Not one woman harmed as an adult has not been suicidal.

There is in some ways more potential for intersexual cooperation between men and women than intrasexual cooperation among men and women.

We talk about “sexual conflict” and an “evolutionary arms race.” But in our modern world, our interests are fundamentally complimentary.
Men argue that they are more promiscuous because they have more to “gain” from being so.

Maybe that’s true. I’d argue it isn’t.

Regardless, it’s only theoretical. It’s not based on empirical reality.

In the modern world, promiscuous men are childless bachelors.
So in the modern, developed world, male promiscuity is quite obviously not correlated with higher reproductive success.

Nevertheless, evolutionary psychologists comically define “reproductive success” by number of partners rather than number of offspring. 🤡
