Today at the @ucu branch briefing I asked the leadership if they plan to again rush a consultation, where union members only have 24h to talk to their delegates & 48h to vote about something they just learnt about.
1/8
I made the case that, BY DESIGN, this process engineers a democratic failure of local branches and of the grassroot as it precludes collective deliberation.
There is no time to talk to one another, to exchange information, and to make sense together of what is happening.
2/8 These deliberative spaces are basically what democracy is about so that seems like a big issue.
3/8 Many, probably most of the members who attended our (packed!) branch meeting on Wednesday were still utterly confused about the deal and what happened last week.
Together, we made sense of it. Together, we shaped a way forward. ✊
4/8 This is not an argument against consultation but against consultation without time for deliberation. Especially relevant when the offer isn't timed.
Here are the replies I received from Jon Hegerty and president elect Justine Mercer.
5/8 Jon Hegerty: "Tens of thousands of members engaged with that process, so clearly they want to be consulted."
I take that as a yes to re-using 48h online consultation on brand new information.
6/8 Justine Mercer: "I hear that people's understanding is enhanced when they talk to one another. Does that therefore mean that the people who don't talk to anyone shouldn't have a say?".
I also take that as a yes to rushed online consultation?
7/8 All this talk of democracy, and we won't even commit to giving people enough time to talk to each other about the thing they are being consulted about? What's the reasoning? That we should all vote before we have talked with anyone who isn't Jo Grady?
8/8 I honestly thought this point on timing was a very easy concession to make in view of the much graver accusations of bias and manipulation re. the e-survey.
@LSE_UCU committee is currently drafting a motion to safeguard this deliberative time, and it seems it's needed. ✊🔥
