I get a few messages from lovely people asking for basic info to counter hostile anti migrant narrative. So I’ve pulled this together to try and cover the typical points - hopefully it helps with those awkward dinner discussions or difficult family members.
1. We can’t help everyone. This is often said by otherwise liberal people. And it’s because this gov & their media propaganda have done a really good job in planting seeds of ‘invasions’. They’ve frightened folk, The reality is numbers are very modest.
Globally the vast maj of people want to stay in their home country, or as close to it as possible - 69% in 22. The UK take far fewer applications than most other EU countries inc Germany, France & Spain.
Safe routes doesn’t mean everyone would come here. It’s a myth the Tories have constructed. We have an open visa route with Ukraine - the only country we have an open visa route with, and very few people have used it contextual to scale of displacement.
Safe routes are managed pathways to protection, they include refugee resettlement in partnership with UNHCR, a proper family reunion process so those with family here can reunify, and a functioning visa system. Safe routes aren’t Open Borders.
2. People do stay in France. France numbers are higher than ours. But if some want to come to the UK why shouldn’t they? Why should the UK be able to not help people just because of geographical location? Do you want to live in a country that doesn’t help anyone?
Gov impose carrier fines on airlines for boarding people onto a flight without a visa. Gov won’t grant you a visa if they suspect you’ll claim asylum. You can’t claim asylum unless you’re here physically in the UK. This necessitates irregular border crossings - it’s the only way
Irregular crossings aren’t new. Pre pandemic it was via lorry, ferry & train. Those ports were made more difficult & during pandemic travel stopped. So people smugglers spotted a gap in the market & proved the route of beach crossings - they’ve got a real stranglehold now
3. If they can afford to pay thousands they’re not refugees. Some pay by using the last of their money or borrowing. Some take on a debt to a 3rd party or the smuggler, often some are forced into awful situations to repay it.
4. They’re all men. They’re not. Around 67% are. Because it’s such an awful journey and people think they can reunify if they can get one family member here to claim asylum.
5. All from Albania. Some are but the majority are from Afghanistan, Iran, Eritrea, Sudan, Syria. Despite the rhetoric Albania does have some protection needs, lots of persecution in GRT community, blood feuds. But really - what we’re asking for is asylum decisions to be made
Make Asylum Decisions. All these arguments mean nothing, men, Albania, criminality - whatever, make asylum decisions! A swift, fair, effective asylum process that explores all the factors and makes decisions about who should be here, there’s really no argument against that.
Asylum decision making has plummeted. That’s why we’ve got people in hotels, in overcrowded conditions. We just gov to make decisions so people can get out of hotels, start working & rebuilding their lives.
Keep countering these myths. In your everyday conversations. That helps MASSIVELY.

And if you have any good faith questions ask them, anytime. The more good people we have understanding the real situations the better.
I talked more about government’s manoeuvring around safe routes here; and the myth of safe routes as open borders. 22 Afghans offered UNHCR safe routes, over 8000 in small boats.

I was asked a question on Novara this evening on modern slavery & the concerns re gov proposals to close support to people crossing irregularly.

Inevitably I’m kicking myself for not sharing the experiences of one family that demonstrate the problems…
A woman found by the roadside in the U.K. with her young son. Taken in by a couple and presented to a service for help. Mum was confused, unable to retain info, disorientated. Things just weren’t ‘feeling right’ for support worker - often 1st indicator of trafficking
Did lots of work, drew blanks. Referred to social care - case closed NFA. Persevered. Worked with school who used an interpreter to speak to son. Son recounted being blind folded during his & his mothers smuggled journey into the UK

Some comments on here around migrants are so vile - I’m venting in a take down of the top anti migrant ‘gotchas’… God help me.

1. We need security checks!/people in the asylum system are criminals, drug dealers, terrorists blah blah
The asylum system takes years. You think gov aren’t doing background checks in that time? WTF they doing? And your typical drug dealer or terrorist doesn’t merrily cross by small boat, March up to authorities & intro themselves. Statistically- they’re born here, we make our own.
2. We want border controls!

By having no safe routes you inevitably have irregular ones. You want border controls then have safe routes. Otherwise the ‘Border controls’ translate to border closure which is ineffective - coz you can’t close borders, circle back to small boats…

What can LA's & support providers do to reduce risks around Hotels?

A question that's come up a few times this week so sharing some thoughts, not definitive just some of my experience, do add any thoughts from yours - sorry for long thread - LOTS of issues.
Police - Keep good frequent dialogue including residents. Build confidence from residents in police & help police build warm dialogue rooted in needs & through lens of trauma. Many will have damaging experiences of police in home country & will be fearful.
UK Culture - offer learning to residents around life in the UK, cultural norms, UK law including hate crime and how to stay safe. Not leaving alone, not hanging around streets - know the area, which areas are safer? Avoid technical language & explain concepts such as 'hate crime'
