Abdel Fattah el-Sisi’s ascent to power was not about democracy; it was about consolidating power for Egypt’s military elite, with the support of the U.S., Israel, and the UK.
A Thread 🧵
TONY BLAIR WAS SISI’S ADVISOR
After leading a coup in 2013 that ousted Mohamed Morsi, Egypt’s first democratically elected president, Sisi suppressed dissent and imprisoned over 60,000 political prisoners. Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, serving as a "Middle East Peace Envoy," played a pivotal role in legitimizing Sisi’s regime.
Blair not only endorsed the coup but also became an informal advisor to Sisi, helping him secure international recognition. He described Sisi as “a necessary partner,” despite the brutal repression and widespread human rights abuses that followed.
A reminder that Tony Blair, alongside George Bush, is responsible for the illegal war in Iraq, which led to the killing, injury, and displacement of millions of Iraqis. This is how Sisi came to make him his advisor. /1
TONY BLAIR: A CHEERLEADER FOR SISI’S OPPRESSION
After Sisi’s coup in 2013, Tony Blair became one of his most vocal international supporters. As the Quartet’s Middle East envoy, Blair lobbied Western governments to back Sisi, portraying him as a bulwark against "extremism."
Blair even advised Sisi on how to reform Egypt’s economy, helping him secure international loans. Behind the scenes, Blair aligned himself with the interests of Gulf monarchies like Saudi Arabia and the UAE, who funded Egypt’s military and feared the rise of the Muslim Brotherhood.
Blair’s support provided Sisi with the legitimacy he needed to consolidate power, despite the mass killings and brutal crackdowns that followed. /2
A THREAD 🧵 of statements made by Israeli officials indicating their intent to EXTERMINATE Palestinians in the Gaza Strip as a whole:
1. Tally Goltiv, Member of the Israeli Knesset, 7 October 2023
'Bring down buildings! Bomb without distinction!! Stop with
this impotence. You have ability. There is worldwide legitimacy! Flatten Gaza. Without mercy! This time, there is no room for mercy.'
2. Ariel Kallner, Member of the Israeli Knesset, 8 October 2023
'Nakba to the enemy now! This day is our Pearl Harbor. We will still learn the lessons. Right now, one goal: Nakba! A Nakba that will overshadow the Nakba of 48. A Nakba in Gaza and a Nakba for anyone who dares to join.'
3. Yoav Kisch, Israel's Education Minister, 9 October 2023
'Those are animals, they have no right to exist. I am not debating the way it will happen, but they need to be exterminated. This [attack] is not enough, there should be more, there should be no limits to the response, I said it a million times until we see hundreds of thousands fleeing
Gaza, we, the IDF has not achieved its mission'
⚡️🇮🇱 ABC REPORTS ON ISRAEL KILLING HUNDREDS OF ISRAELIS ON OCTOBER 7th
“28 fighter helicopters shot all of the ammunition in their bellies.”
In July, the Israeli newspaper Haaretz revealed commanders in the IDF gave the order to fire on troops who had been captured by Hams at three separate locations, explicitly referencing the Hannibal Directive.
One former Israeli officer, Air Force Colonel Nof Erez, told a Haaretz podcast the directive was not specifically ordered but was "apparently applied" by responding aircrews.
Panicked, operating without their normal command structure and unable to coordinate with ground forces, they fired on vehicles returning to Gaza, knowing they were likely carrying hostages.
"This was a mass Hannibal. It was tons and tons of openings in the fence, and thousands of people in every type of vehicle, some with hostages and some without," Colonel Erez said.
Air force pilots described to Yedioth Ahronot newspaper the firing of "tremendous" amounts of ammunition on October 7 at people attempting to cross the border between Gaza and Israel.
"Twenty-eight fighter helicopters shot over the course of the day all of the ammunition in their bellies, in renewed runs to rearm. We are talking about hundreds of 30-millimetre cannon mortars and Hellfire missiles," reporter Yoav Zeitoun said.
"The frequency of fire at the thousands of terrorists was enormous at the start, and only at a certain point did the pilots begin to slow their attacks and carefully choose the targets."
Six Months On, The Israeli Assault On Gaza Is A Complete Failure.
Netanyahu Had Set Out Three Objectives When Launching The Genocide.
He Hasn't Met These Goals And They Become Further From His Reach With Each Passing Day.
His Goals Were To:
📍Achieve A "Total Victory" Over Hamas
📍Rescue The 253 Hostages Taken On October 7
📍Prevent A Further Attack From Ever Taking Place (Maintaining Long-term Security).
These Objectives Are Now Further Away Now Than Ever Before.
1. TOTAL VICTORY
To achieve the first goal, the Israeli army turned Gaza into a barren wasteland, with a looming famine, and its residents badly wounded, displaced, dead, or starving.
By December 2023, just two months into the start of Israel's military campaign, Israel dropped an estimated 29,000 bombs, of which 40 to 45 percent were unguided "dumb" bombs, on a densely populated strip of land one-third the size of Los Angeles.
Yet six months into the Genocide and despite Israel’s claims that it has “eliminated” 19 out of 24 battalions, Hamas' top leadership not only remains intact but stands tall with the support of Palestinians.
Israel's proclamations of military "success" on the Gaza battlefield against Hamas forces has hurt Israels own narrative.
Numerous public relations blunders, from the infamous Rantisi Children’s Hospital "Calendargate" – which has been turned into a worldwide meme viewed millions of times – to outright lies, such as those of the former Israeli government spokesman Eylon Levy to the UK Foreign Secretary Lord Cameron regarding the blockage of aid to Gaza, as well as the entirely fictitious story of a hostage giving birth in captivity as told by Sara Netanyahu to US First Lady Jill Biden, have eroded Israel's credibility even in the eyes of allied and friendly governments.
Most recently, Israel's official excuse for the targeting of a World Central Kitchen aid convoy – three times – was denounced worldwide, leading to calls for an independent inquiry.
This leaves Hamas, despite its losses on the battlefield, in control of the overall narrative while Israel's trustworthiness falls to an all-time low.
2. HOSTAGE RELEASE
The second objective, the rescue of hostages, has been even more of a failure, with military force only succeeding in rescuing 3 LIVING hostages and one deceased one – out of a total of 253 – amid six months of raids, heavy bombing, and ground incursions.
In one operation, two hostages were rescued while killing around 100 Gazans. Three further Israeli hostages were killed by Israeli military fire despite emerging from their captivity shirtless and waving white flags.
Through negotiations, 109 hostages were released by Hamas, 105 of them through a prisoner exchange deal and four released prior to the temporary truce early in the Genocide.
An unknown number of the hostages are dead, with Israel killing over 70 in the bombing of Gaza.
Without a new hostage exchange deal, the objective of freeing the hostages remains unfulfilled.
A thread of Israel’s involvement in conflicts all over the world. 🧵
1️⃣The Rwandan Genocide - 1994
Israel supplied significant weaponry to the Hutu militias responsible for the slaughter of over 1 million Tutsi civilians in Rwanda over the course of 100 days.
The arsenal provided by Israel included 5.56mm bullets, rifles, and grenades. The Rwandan Genocide stands as one of the most horrific genocides in modern history.
Israel has made repeated efforts to hide its arms shipments to Rwanda both before and during the genocide, out of fear of legal repercussions.
2️⃣ Apartheid South Africa 1948 - 1994
Israel maintained an alliance with the South African apartheid regime, supplying anti-riot vehicles and weaponry to suppress the native black population. Israel aided the regime in developing nuclear weapons and opposed the global embargo and boycott of apartheid South Africa.
For decades, the Zionist Federation in South Africa celebrated individuals like Percy Yutar, who prosecuted Nelson Mandela for sabotage and conspiracy against the state in 1963, resulting in Mandela's imprisonment for 27 years.
WHAT IS THE ICJ?
The ICJ, also called the World Court, is the highest United Nations legal body, established in 1945 to deal with disputes between states. It should not be confused with the treaty-based International Criminal Court, also in The Hague, which handles war crimes cases against individuals.
The ICJ's 15-judge panel - which will be expanded by an additional judge from each side in the Israel case - deals with border disputes and increasingly cases brought by states accusing others of breaking U.N. treaty obligations.
Both South Africa and Israel are signatories to the 1948 Genocide Convention which gives the ICJ the jurisdiction to rule on disputes over the treaty. While the case revolves around the occupied Palestinian territories, Palestinians have no official role in the proceedings because they are not a United Nations member state.
All states that signed the Genocide Convention are obliged to not commit genocide and also to prevent and punish it. The treaty defines genocide as "acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group".
WHAT IS SOUTH AFRICA'S CASE?
In its 84-page filing South Africa says that by killing Palestinians in Gaza, causing them serious mental and bodily harm and by creating conditions on life "calculated to bring about their physical destruction", Israel is committing genocide against them.
It lists Israel's failure to provide essential food, water, medicine, fuel, shelter and other humanitarian assistance to the Gaza strip during the more than three-month-old war with Hamas. It also points to the sustained bombing campaign which has laid much of the enclave to waste, forced the evacuation of some 1.9 million Palestinians and killed over 23,000 people according to Gaza health authorities.
"The acts are all attributable to Israel, which has failed to prevent genocide and is committing genocide in manifest violation of the Genocide Convention," the filing says, adding that Israel also failed to curb incitement to genocide by its own officials in violation of the convention. It asks the court to impose emergency measures to cease alleged violations by Israel.
