2/24 Norse mythology is a very fascinating subject filled with vivid stories.
I'll provide a brief summary of the mythology surrounding Fenrir; the summary, however, does not do Norse mythology justice. I'll drop some resources at the end for anyone interested in learning more
3/24 In Norse mythology, Fenrir is the son the trickster god Loki and also the harbinger of Ragnarok (the twilight of the gods). Fenrir is often depicted as an antagonist to the Norse Gods because he kills Odin at Ragnarok.
4/24 Fenrir has a very tragic backstory, in Norse mythology.
The gods, upon hearing the prophecies of Ragnarok and learning of Fenrir, kidnap him from his mother as a young puppy.
5/24 Fenrir, as a puppy, grows both in strength and size at an alarming rate which terrifies the gods given the prophecy. The gods decide that Fenrir must be bound.
6/24 The gods have a special chain, Gleipnir, forged. Through trickery, the gods succeed in binding Fenrir to a rock on an island and stab a sword through his mouth so that Fenrir cannot bark or bite. The gods abandon Fenrir on this island here where he remains until Ragnarok.
7/24 Fenrir does eventually free himself, triggering Ragnarok, and exacts his revenge on the gods that betrayed him by killing Odin (self fulfilling prophecy much?). Odin's son, Vidarr, slays Fenrir shortly after.
8/24 This concludes my basic breakdown of the Norse mythology surrounding Fenrir. To learn more I recommend the following resources that I used as part of my research
9/24 Now that we have a basic understanding of the myth, let's examine the artwork and discuss what Fenrir's inclusion could mean for the @MutantHounds saga.
10/24 Fenrir is portrayed as a huge wolf throughout mythology and modern media. The @MutantHounds artwork is not an exception. We can see how massive he is by using the weapons lodged in him and the skulls at his feet for scale.
11/24 We can also see that Fenrir, much like in the Norse lore, is bound to a rock with Gleipnir.
12/24 Lastly, we see a huge sword sticking out of Fenrir to represent the sword that was stabbed through his mouth during his binding.
13/24 The inclusion of Fenrir in the collection raises some interesting questions and implications for the overarching @MutantHounds lore.
As we know, all Mutant Hounds are created by Caleb Lockjaw so it stands to reason that Caleb also created Fenrir.
14/24 If Fenrir is the son of Loki in Norse mythology then are there some parallels between Loki and Caleb? By this I mean does this imply Caleb has a tricky nature and there is more to him than meets the eye?
15/24 If we look at Fenrir's backstory we can see that Fenrir was treated very horribly by the Norse gods up to and through his binding. The Fenrir shown here looks angry and the weapons sticking out of him indicate that there was a great battle leading to his binding.
16/24 So then how and why did Fenrir come to be bound to the rock, was he similarly betrayed, and who is waiting to exact revenge on?
Did Caleb forge the version of Gleipnir we see or was it someone else?
Who or what can wield the huge sword we see sticking out his back?
17/24 Also recall that Fenrir is the harbinger of Ragnarok, which spells the doom for many Norse gods, upon his release.
What climactic events in the @MutantHounds saga will be tied to Fenrir breaking free him his restraints?
18/24 Lastly the most interesting thing of Fenrir's inclusion has to do with the theme of Good vs Evil.
In Norse mythology and modern media Fenrir is usually portrayed as an antagonist to the gods because (among other reasons) he brings forth Ragnarok and kills Odin.
19/24 Yet examining the lore closely shows that Fenrir was treated very badly and cruelly by the gods who to him appear as villains because they kidnapped, betrayed, tortured, and ultimately abandoned him.
20/24 This goes to show that Good vs Evil can be a matter of perspective and ties in with what I believe the @MutantHounds lore has been trying to show us with the evolving conflict between Blaksoot and Darkfang.
21/24 Finally while we're speculating, why don't we also speculate on what types of powers Fenrir might have?
The majority of Fenrir's abilities from Norse mythology include super strength and his immense size. He's also able to swallow the sun/moon whole.
22/24 We can already see that Fenrir will have immense size and will naturally have immense strength given his size.
23/24 Given that some media portrays Fenrir as a shapeshifter and his father Loki is also a shape shifter we may see this ability in the hounds as well. @MutantHounds has already hinted that Sam possesses a similar ability.
24/24 Fenrir, in my opinion, is the most exciting Mega Hound unveiled so far given the rich lore and history he is adapted from and the implications it can have for the @MutantHounds saga.
LMK your thoughts on Fenrir and anything I may have gotten wrong in the comments
