🔴#LIVE from Cartagena, Colombia: @GRSBeef Symposium, event organized by the Colombian Roundtable on Sustainable Livestock (@MGSColombia), with the support of @tfa_Global, @WWFColombia, @UKinColombia, the Alliance Bioversity-CIAT, and other partners.
@GRSBeef@MGSColombia@tfa_Global@WWFColombia@UKinColombia Representatives from the National Roundtables on Sustainable Livestock of 🇵🇾Paraguay, 🇲🇽Mexico, 🇺🇸USA, 🇧🇷Brazil, 🇧🇴Bolivia, 🇨🇦Canada and 🇨🇴Colombia share their approaches, principles and advances on #SustainableLivestock on their countries; A priceless exchange of knowledge.
"We do direct measures like concentrations and GHG fluxes in soil, forage, trees, crops and animals; and indirect: remote sensing to register changes in quality & quantity of forage, soil carbon & above ground biomass; animal sensors to register movements, behavior and feed intake"
@Jacobo_ABC@GRSBeef@MGSColombia "An example is our work in Hacienda San José: based on a life cycle analysis, we calculated the carbon footprint from cradle to farm-gate, GHG emissions & removals in a 5y period of measurements, finding that there is a potential removal of 2.5 tCO₂/ha/yr, a positive footprint".
@Jacobo_ABC@GRSBeef@MGSColombia "Systems thinking is necessary to assess climate impacts at the landscape scale. Life cycle assessment and particularly the Carbon footprint are suitable methodologies for carbon monitoring at product and landscape scale". some of the conclusions of @Jacobo_ABC's presentation.

Stefan Burkart, sr. scientist of the #TropicalForages Program presents in the @IGC2023 Grassland Policies, Social Issues, and Ecosystem Services session the keynote 'Public policies for the development of a sustainable, forage-based cattle sector in Latam: A comparative analysis'
@IGC2023 LatAm is essential in the global cattle industry since it contributes > 25% of global🥩supply and 10% of 🥛supply. A sector that generates both internal and external benefits. However, the environmental effects of traditional or conventional production should be considered.
@IGC2023 Although the countries express a political will to promote sust. practices, the advances are dissimilar. Even though, the implemented policies should not be abandoned, but rather persist and be expressed in tangible effects. It is necessary to assume them as a long-term process.
