The last three years have been tough but there is reason to be hopeful.
2/10

First, it is important to acknowledge reality.

While we want COVID to be over, it is not and there is no reason to believe this will suddenly change.

Life expectancy has declined and please look carefully at excess mortality (all age groups):
3/10

And no, this has nothing to do with vaccines, it is COVID.

If you are at any risk of getting infected (pretty much everyone exposed to the air of other people), it is a good idea to get boosted at least every 6 months.
4/10

And yes, a lot of the coping we see play out in society is not pretty.

There are several mechanisms at play. It is important to know these to both develop a robust defense against them and understand the behavior of others.

One example:

Clean air will help in many ways and it is not as far away as you might think.

At the end of last year, Belgium passed a game changing law that aims to protect the country from future pandemics.

Royal decrees will concern all public indoor spaces. health.belgium.be/en/news/indoor…
6/10

In a new certification system all indoor spaces will be labelled based on their air-quality, visible to all visitors.

The government will have access to all this which in the best case scenario might be publicly available real-time data. brusselstimes.com/belgium-news/2…
7/10

There are already today several examples of real-time CO2 measurements all over the world.

- Lübeck, Germany

It is very likely that future societies will want to breathe clean air, but how long this will take is uncertain.

@masketairs try to accelerate the transition to this future - they inform, they promote clean air & wear masks until we are there.

Highlights🧵

"The researchers discovered that a SARS-CoV-2 infection substantially diminishes cognitive performance in those affected:

Subjects processed visual information more slowly and experienced faster exhaustion compared to a similarly sized control group."
"'We interpret this as evidence of chronically diminished brain activity in Long COVID, primarily manifesting as slowed information processing,'
states Kathrin Finke, the psychological head of the Jena Post-COVID Clinic."

German Health Minister Karl Lauterbach provides a crucial update on the ongoing Long COVID situation, as Germany faces a new wave amidst the holiday season.

(with English subtitles)
After this selection, which mostly contained information about the effects of COVID, I asked ChatGPT to act as the minister and finish the speech, as unfortunately Lauterbach's logical conclusion regarding the recommendation of next steps was... poor.

Much better work by the AI: Image

MP O'Connor stellt Premierminister Rockliff ein paar schwere Fragen:

1/4

If you haven't seen these excess mortality graphs yet, take a moment and think about it before opening the thread:

- What do you think the graph for your country looks like?
- What should it look like if everything was okay?
- What should it not look like? Image
If there had been no pandemic, wars or other catastrophes, you would expect something like this.

So, this is also the graph for people who still believe
"COVID is a hoax" Image
This is how it should look like if you think there was just one problematic wave and then it was over.

One mistake is that this wouldn't account for an overshoot (you would expect the curve to come down after the peak because people would have died earlier instead of spread out) Image
