Not a "bhosad piller"and I firmly believe reservations should stay. Infact I believe existing reservations reduced a bit and a full 5-10% given to children of inter caste marriages. Incl maybe full sponsorship of children born to such parents. The numbers are negligible rn
1/n that said. These are very vague and tenuous arguments. Correlation is not equal to causation.

Take a foundational metric, both Kerala and TN (to name the few key South Indian states one associates with higher standards of living) had much higher literacy rates
2/n as opposed to the "backward" states. Kerala was @ 56%, TN @ 36%, Pondy 46%, compare this with the erstwhile "Bimaru" states that ranged from 18-20% in the 61 census. This was much before when the 69% reservations were rolled out. Clearly the social infra in edu
3/n to begin with was far more rooted in what are the advanced states today even back in 1947.

Let's dive deeper into colonial history to see why there was this divergence to begin with.

In this paper (available online) Lakshmi Iyer (2008) makes a very clear case
3/n that social infrastructure, schools, healthcare, access to input measures like fertilizer, irrigation infrastructure all were higher in indirectly ruled states / provinces vs direct Raj controlled territory. Colonial extraction was also far more intense in
4/n Raj controlled states. Tax rates were higher but per capita tax extraction was lower (efficiency measure here).

There is a cruel historical irony at play here. The Raj annexed and directly governed regions that had the highest agricultural productivity in the
5/n 1790-1850 period but then conversely neglected to invest in social infrastructure and limiting itself to capex that helped further resource extraction.

It goes further than just the Raj period. In "Lives of Indian Princes" (Allen & Dwidevi 08) they make the case
6/n that these elite princes had a much higher rate of participation in electoral politics in independent India. This in turn lead to greater voter participation and active pressure from the electorate for better governance.

There are other social pressures that have ailed
7/n these benighted areas including much higher levels of communal or casteist violence (The Colonial origins of violence, Ajay Varghese).

Combine all this and states like Kerala, Large swathes of TN, Maharashtra etc simply had a much better(relative to the poorer states)
8/n social infrastructure. A more engaged and vibrant electorate.

These were natural advantages in 1947 these states had and it reflected in pretty much every metric.

Besides, if "reservation" is an auto win ggwp, then United Provinces saw the Raj impose a 33%
9/n reservation in favour of Muslims in the administration. Yet even to this day Muslims in UP are poorer than in the advanced states like TN, Gujarat etc.

I am consciously keeping this post short and only touching it from 30,000 feet to provide context but the discerning
10/n reader can do their own research from just the citations I have provided as a starting point.

And then we get the gigantic cluster fuck that was the FEP.

So you have these resource rich hinterland states that were in 1947 already poor and lacking social infrastructure
11/n but had the resource advantage. Which the richer (mostly coastal) states that are the supercharged engines of today lacked. They had all other advantages including access to ports. Rather than a sustained investment in infrastructure Negruji (literally every Ill in
12/n India today can be traced to this ahole clan...#cmv) in his eternal wisdom took a 10 feet thick pole, minus the lube to these states. By implementing fep, he eliminated the resource advantage also and capital fled to the coastal states.
13/n we now have a perfect shit storm of epic proportions. The lack of an engaged electorate then lead to the Congress playing horrible politics creating and maintaining instability in these states.

Take Bihar for instance. After Krishna Sinha who saw a 11 year tenure
14/n had 27 CM's in the period 1961-1990. That's 27 in 29 years! All of them from the Congress. This excludes the 5 times President's rule was imposed over a 2 year period.

There is not a chance in hell of a stable administration providing basic governance.
15/15 so it's far far far more complex than saying "reservations = better social outcomes".

Our first education minister Abul Kalam Azad, had no formal education, was born to an Afghan father and Saudi mother in Saudi Arabia (then Ottoman Turkey)

Indira Gandhi never completed her formal education. She at least was undeniably intelligent.

Rajiv Gandhi though
2/n a senior Mandarin in the MEA wrote to an attache in the Indian embassy in London (who himself was a Cambridge PhD) asking for him to help with Pappu sr's admission into Cambridge.

The attache then spoke to high officials in Trinity Cambridge and got Pappu sr
3/n a conditional admit, subject to his clearing MSQ -entrance exam - imagine the privilege! Getting admission in Cambridge before even taking the admission exam.

Pappu sr predictably aced the exam... actually he flunked.

I am curious as to just how much these western "liberals" spew fake news on very objective and verifiable truths.

Take this article by @IChotiner

newyorker.com/news/q-and-a/h…

And break it down para by para to understand the lies and Propaganda.
1/n the opening para has a clear lie and a partial truth written to twist facts.

Lie 1 (L1) - Rahul Gandhi was convicted of insulting an entire community named Modi. Not just for "likening" the PM to a thief.

If @IChotiner had an iota of journalistic integrity
2/n he would have mentioned also the fact that Rahul Gandhi had to apologise in the Supreme court for alleging that the PM was a thief (chowkidar chor hai).

The partial lie is the sentence. It is written to appear as though the sentence was twisted to ensure 2 years

Let's just take this bit and deconstruct the colonial propaganda that still resonates across the centuries.

Sati was NEVER a widespread problem. British records themselves note that there were only a few 200 cases a year (even 1 is 1 too many) and this was localised
2/n to Rajasthan and Bengal. The linkage to Islamic depredations is clearly manifest.

Female infanticide and sex selection were never a recorded issue till the 1970's when US propaganda backed by funding for research pushed the theory that sex selection will help
3/n reduce population growth. On the subject of "municipal government" for the first time. Only someone utterly ignorant of Indian administrative history will make such a stupid, ridiculous claim.

Take the Cholas or Vijayanagara for instance

Truschke here says that "Nalanda recovered" offering no proof but the claims of one Tibetan monk who visited a 100 years later with the implicit argument being "Khilji didn't destroy Nalanda"

But what did this monk, Dharmasvamin (chag lo Chosrjedpal) say she skips.
1/n the monk, Dharmasvamin has his. Visit covered in a text by Dr Roerich and Dr Altekar.

In this work, chapter 10 covers his visit and stay at Nalanda.
2/n he describes how lofty and magnificent the structures were but also says,

1) they were damaged by Turukshas (Turks aka Khilji)
2) there was no one left to look after or make offerings.

Hsein Tsang had estimated that during his visit 10,000 + students were domiciled

The Romans did not have equality of law, if anything they had a very graded system.

To begin with, Romans discriminated on the basis of culture.

Only Romans got full citizenship and hence rights. Even those on the Italian peninsula only got a watered down system
2/n called Latin rights. Brutal wars were fought by Rome's Italian neighbours over the discrimination they had to endure, they even fought brutal wars over this (see, Social wars).

Then you have the Provincials (conquered nations outside the peninsula) and these had
3/n few rights to speak of. For instance a Roman nobleman could kill a Gallic "barbarian" in public and not face any consequences.

Within the "Roman" law, you had further discrimination,

Women and Children had no rights. They were governed by the Paterfamilias

So will break this up into multiple pieces lest it get unwieldy.

This shorter part will cover something very important, port turn around.
1/n. Port turn around is very very important to attract large vessels. Why? Because for them time is literally money. Container carriers (think CMA OR Maersk for ex) only own a portion of their fleet, like airlines they lease the rest. Even in normal times these are expensive twitter.com/i/web/status/1… Image
2/n but during covid they signed up at rates north of $100,000 / day (yes per day) on longer term contracts (1-3 years). What does this mean? They hate dwell time. What's DT? The time a vessel is berthed in port (or waiting in outer anchorage to berth), securing and discharging
