When I lived in Tennessee people used the n word in casual conversation, and there was statues of Nathan Bedford Forrest in black neighborhoods. 
These states have white majorities that vote entirely on which party is more racist. It's not all of the south. It's not all red states. It's the least reconstructed confederate states. No idea why people insist on white washing this.
