Northern Foundation director Urmas Aarni Polli attempted an armed overthrow of an island nation in 1981.

In 1989 Stephen Harper was a member of the ultra-right-wing Northern Foundation about the same time that he became policy chief of the Reform Party.
The Reform Party under Preston Manning and Harper housed former Neo-Nazi Western Guard (a 1960s Toronto hate group) members Leigh Smith and Wolfgang Droege who then formed Heritage Front and brought members into the Reform Party and eventually the CPC.
