🧵I spent 50+ hours in #trains in past few weeks travelling to/through Belgium, Austria, Germany, France & Italy - here’s what I learned ⤵️
1. Italian trains are by far most comfortable (space, socket & food) but also most punctual, followed by French and last Deutsche Bahn ❌
🗣 Silence carriages are amazing - no music, loud talking or phones make them an ideal environment for a long nap or work catch up 🔥
🔥 We need to rethink travelling to include journey as part of experience.
I met amazing people in my night train (sharing 5sqft space with strangers helps) & deciding to stop in Bologna & Milan omw to Rome allowed me to discover cities I didn’t know (& eat delicious food)
😴 Night trains are future of long distance travel (at least in 🇪🇺).
But they need a serious make over (& women only cabins). Mine was full of eco minded convinced people but lack of amenities (sockets etc) & looks of it would deter a less convinced audience 🤦♀️
🚅 I saw some of the most beautiful landscapes over the past weeks that I wouldn’t experience on a plane.
Paris to Milan route specifically, going through the Alps, is breathtaking & Bologna to Rome, through Umbria & Tuscany lives rent free in my head 😍
💰Trains are still way too expensive. I booked tickets months in advance but compared to friends flying to same destination, I paid an average of 50 to 80% more - cost if a key factor to make rail a real alternative, probably more than time.
