A former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Lamido Sanusi, has said the claim by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company that Nigeria consumes 66 million litres of fuel daily is simply “unbelievable.”
Sanusi queried the supposed volume of Nigeria’s daily consumption of petrol. We need to do a high standard audit of every penny spent on the NNPC.
He said, “In 2019, officially we were importing 40 million litres per day. In 2022 officially, we were importing 66 million per day.
In three years, we have increased our petrol consumption by 50%.
Please tell me, is it the population? Is it the number of cars? Just ask yourself if it makes sense that in three years you increase your consumption of petrol by 50%. Are we drinking petrol?
“The NNPC says we are consuming 66 million litres per day, so we are consuming more than Indonesia, Pakistan, Egypt, Cote d’Ivoire and others.
“We need to ask NNPC to document and bring evidence for every dollar they took as subsidy.
They must give the ships that came and we can verify from the insurance companies if those ships were in Nigeria on those dates.
“That is what the law says. There must be proof that the product came in, at the price you said you bought it, before you pay subsidy,” he added.
He further stated that with the current state of the economy, it would not be easy to fix.
lamenting the current hardship Nigerians are facing &said until the government is transparent & credible towards the citizens, it has no right to impose such hardship on the citizenry.
He said, “Until we bring credibility and transparency to the management of public finance, no government has the moral right to impose hardship on Nigerians. They have suffered enough.
You cannot with this level of debt service, collapse in revenue and poverty overturn things just like that. We have to take corrective decisions and first close out inflated and false numbers.Nigeria needs a leader who understands the economy.

Nigeria has changed. The economy of Nigeria is not the same again whether we like it or not. we are running a very strange economy and strange system of government where the local, state and federal government, at the end of the month, go and earn salary.
We are the only country in the world that does that.
Everywhere else, governments rely on the people to produce taxes and that is what they use to run the local government, state and the federation. But with the way we run Nigeria, the country can go to sleep.
Infact some governors at the end of the month, all they do is to just go to Abuja, collect money and we come back to spend. We are in trouble, huge financial trouble.
Obaseki advised the Federal Government on Wednesday, April 8, 2021, during a meeting with the Transition Committee members at the Government House in Benin City, the Edo State capital.
He noted that the major oil giants like Chevron and Shell no longer invest so much oil
as was obtainable in the past.
The governor, being an investment banker, explained that Chevron is now one of the world’s investors in alternative fuel, adding that Shell intends to pull out of Nigeria.
He said 👇🏿
“In another year or so, where will we find this money that we go to Abuja to share every month? Last month, we got FAAC for March. The Federal Government printed an additional ₦50 to ₦60 billion to top-up for us to share,”
Borrowing for recurrent expenditure foolish, says Obasanjo
Former President of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo, has frowned at the way the Federal Government is taking loans. According to the ex-president, borrowing for recurrent expenditure is ‘foolish’.
In a video interview posted on Channel’s Television, Obasanjo said that borrowing and accumulating debt for the next generations to come is criminal.
He said, “If you want to build a commercial house and you go and borrow money, and you have 50 per cent of your own money and
you borrow 50 per cent and in five years, you pay the 50 per cent that you borrowed. That is a wise thing to do. But if you have to go and borrow money for you to be able to feed yourself and your family, that is a stupid thing to do. In fact, the most stupid thing I have seen.
Sanusi Lamido:
We have governors, they go to China and spend one month on a tour and what do they come back with, MoU on debts. China will lend you $1.8bn to build light rail. This light rail will be done by rail workers from China.
The trains will come from China.
The engines will come from China. Labour comes from China. The driver is Chinese.
“At the end of the day, what do you benefit from it?
Your citizen will ride on a train and when you ride on a train, in northern Nigeria, in a state like Kano or Katsina, where are you going to?
You are not going to an industrial estate to work. You are not going to school?
You are not going to the farm.
You borrow money from China to invest in trains so that your citizens can ride on them and go for weddings and naming ceremonies.
