I am going to cry—not just from the v kind things @DeeshaPhilyaw says abt me, but from the entire #Lit16 project: how she, @KieseLaymon and Robert Jones, Jr. just decided to lift 16 debut writers up. Didn't wait for grants or institutions. Just did the Toni Morrison thing....
Trying to recall the line correctly I learned from @prisonculture (whose new book w @MsKellyMHayes
y'all should buy) —it's like "everything worth doing is better done together."
Totally chaotic country - as @sleepyknave points out the Washington Post is reporting that Covid is a leading form of death in the US, even as just four days apart it’s opinion desk is calling for the end of the public emergency or a mere 5 days of isolation???
I’ve idea what to do now except try not to get Covid. Thank God the winter of isolation is over & I can eat w ppl outside again. But what do to if infected? Can’t get feee home tests. Nowhere to get PCR or rapid tests anymore. Ask your doc for a test? How to get Pax in 5 days?
It feels just like a total forced capitulation to not knowing what the Covid level is, not knowing how many ppl are dying, not allowing testing (PCR or rapid, at home or at a clinic) — like being forced to to just accept repeat infection, long Covid & an unknown level of death.
While I am glad the NYT is finally covering this, as @imarajones wrote earlier today, I take big issue w framing that "the pace of the campaign against transgender rights has stunned political leaders across the spectrum."
"What has stuck, somewhat unexpectedly, is the issue of trans identity, particularly among young people. Today, the effort to restrict transgender rights has supplanted same-sex marriage...at a pace that has stunned political leaders across the spectrum. "
The misery and suffering this is causing is on YOUR hands, @emilybazelon
It is *inexcusable* that the Times, the self proclaimed "paper of record" for the nation, has not covered how a rogue AG has bypassed legislation and effectively wiped out access to gender affirming care for six million people (in a move other AGs will likely try to mimic).
Benjamin Ryan is a bad repoter, a bad writer and seems like a bad person and I encourage no one to cooperate with him on this, or any, story. Yesterday, there were horrific anti-trans stories in Wyoming, Nebraska and Missouri. Fuck the NYT & Ben Ryan for seeking “misgivings.”
I don’t like to bring up my day job bc it causes headaches but I’ll do so here bc it’s so important: as the holder of the 1st journalism professorship to focus on LGBTQ issues, much of Ben’s work—and this piece specifically—is dangerous to the wellness of LGBTQ people.
I have a big piece in edits now in Scientific American about this matter, which shows how bad this type of “journalism” is. The Times & Ryan have no business shaking the trees to elevate some doctor, somewhere who is opposed to scientific consensus abt the benefit of transcare.
This motherfucking judge in this motherfucking country. This means PrEP will not longer be free for ppl w insurance. PrEP is but one tool w unevenly felt personal benefits, but v helpful in lowering the overall HIV viral loads. A viral underclass to bloat insurance profits.
This is bad for all health but especially regarding preventative care for infectious diseases. We want viral and bacterial loads low for everyone! It improves lives for everyone!! When I say capitalism is the vector — here, the state is opening the bodies of ppl up to viruses!!
The only value of capitalism is extracting value from bodies and labor and shifting it upwards to the capitalist class. That’s it, there’s nothing else. In Greece in 2010, austerity stripped $ from syringe exchange, so HIV increased 3,000%.
Total McKinsey speak CYA langauge. They can say “we didn’t overreact” if there isn’t a problem and if ppl get sick and die they can say “hey it’s not our fault they were reckless, we warned them.” Unacceptable.
