THREAD 1. I'm constantly frustrated by the inability of politicians across Europe (especially in the UK) to agree and broker an adequate outcome to Brexit for the Citizens of Europe (including British people) #SaveFOM
2. Brexit never needed to mean loss of Freedom of Movement of People (FOM). The border control craved by UK gov and the Rest-of-World immigration limits wanted by a few Leave voters, are unrelated to the mobility that European FOM gave us. Visas don't replace it adequately.
3. I'd love to reverse Brexit, but too many people tell me that's either not possible, or not achievable quickly. And so I don't think we should wait for Brexit to be reversed before demanding improvements to people mobility for all. (Especially those "mobile" before Brexit.)
4. @UKLabour 's refusal to countenance restored FOM of People is unacceptable to me. I'd like to see @LibDems, @TheGreenParty and others talking about it much more too. And in terms of emigration, mobility & opportunity rather than just apologising for/justifying immigration.
5. Bilateral agreements (some pre- and some post-Schengen signing) alleviate the 90-in-180 day problem for New Zealanders, Canadian, USA and Japanese citizens (+ more developed countries too). #SaveFOM @SaveFOM
6. But blocker is UK gov policy of "not normally negotiating visa waivers. FCDO says policy is constantly under review". But I want to know @FCDOGovUK when the policy ever would be reviewed if the uniqueness of Brexit doesn't constitute a good enough reason @RishiSunak
7. I don't like Brexit, but it seems we are stuck with it for now. I don't want to spend the next 20 years of my life without mobility in Europe and an inadequate system of expensive and bureaucratic visas to replace it. #SaveFOM @SaveFOM @RishiSunak
8. Even @DavidGHFrost tweeted on Apr 3 calling for getting rid of the "silly 90/180 day annual time limit" but failed to mention the UK currently lets Europeans in for 6 months per visit. So why did UK gov reject the @EU_Commission proposal of a mobility chapter for the TCA?
9. British people with lives / clients / work / careers / family / homes in European countries deserve much better from UK government ministers. But at the moment they are not listening. When is that going to change @RishiSunak? @EU_Commission?
10. So please join me in calling for restoration of reciprocal FOM of People for all Europeans, and in the interim until that can be delivered better, more liberal per-country visa-waivers and proper protection of all citizens impacted by Brexit mobility issues @SaveFOM #SaveFOM.
