“Thanks” to the unacceptable silence/response from key figures involved with #BEEFNetflix re: David Choe, I’ve let go of a once-in-a-blue-moon moment for **Viet-Am** representation in media. We’re still not getting the exposure or respect we deserve, so every bit feels crucial.
I truly don’t know if there’ll be another moment like this, considering the workings of the industry & its attitudes re: my community. But as much as this is a loss, events transpired have made everything a moment to learn & reflect—not or no longer a celebration.
So we’re VERY clear, I’m not writing all this to lament, lick career wounds or the like. Yes, it is a career wound, but if you know me or the abysmal representation of Viets in media, you’ll simply get what I’m conveying here. This is not the Usual actor coverage.
If you know Viets in the arts, Chị Đào is **famous** It has always been my hope to let you know Who #BEEFNetflix got in its cast, and this Who is not “some Viet star.” Even if she is just that, it’ll still benefit you to know we don’t need another Thai or Chinese to play a Viet.
Before this 🧵 no longer becomes Mini, I’ll close with I wish Chị Đào all the best in her career. And although this will hurt, don’t be sad for me; be sad that the response for what has gone down is the typical “look the other way.”
Please direct your attention (or more of it) to @kimmythepooh@reappropriate@hooleil@aurabogado & more I’m sure I’ve missed who are commenting on the destructive effect of David Choe with precision & even courage.

Would like to shout out to @mjmichellekim (for this thread) & @izzyampil (for her BuzzFeed News article) as well.
I might regret for not being able to hold them in any longer, but here are some thoughts on the Licorice Pizza Asian accent scene because both sides are getting out of control, no matter the nature of the arguments presented 🧵 [1/6] #FilmTwitter
Jerry Frick’s behavior is insulting. Not nice. The direction & writing (*hopefully intention as well) depict that *even if it’s faint AF* (or subjected to some manipulation in the now widely shared clip).
BUT this doesn’t mean it’s not problem-free. Focus now. Keep reading.
1st problem: Frick’s stupid act adds NOTHING to the story, or at most negligible. Regardless, it’s just era window-dressing.
So you said “my parents/grans used to speak like that to minorities.” Thx for sharing so proudly (?), still film doesn’t need this to make it feel real.
