The coroner's inquest into the Vancouver police killing of Myles Gray resumes today at 9 AM.

Cst Bowater was trainer.
Starting "Charlie shift" in marked police car.

Heard call from M Reza describing shirtless mail, possibly intoxicated, high.
Heard call from Cst Sahota.
Call for cover.
She and Bowater were on different call.

Heard calls saying male was challenging.

Began driving lights and sirens took 12-13 minutes to get there.

Heard a lot of heavy breathing and stress from police calls.

When arrived heard update Myles was in custody

Saw Folkestad
Sahota, Thompson.

Folkestad appeared crying. Jaw, face swollen. Kept swearing.

Sahota's hair a mess. Globule of spit on hair.
Uniform dirty.

Thompson injured. Extreme blood on face.

Bowater told her to stay with them.

Folkestad looked like he couldn't stand up.

Ambulance
Paramedic to Thompson first.

Heard that her field trainer wanted her to go up might be excited delirium.

**Excited delirium is made up by cops when they kill.**

Confirms she saw Myles laying in grass there.

Myles on stomach, head to side.
Two handcuffs. Hobble.
Bowater holding hobble.

Officer Dent holding shoulders.

Doesn't remember other officers.

Saw smeared blood on Myles face.

Recalls his chest moving. Doesn't remember abnormal breathing.

Within a minute of her arrival, Myles rolled onto back. Cpr.
Believes Bowater and Cain.

Within minute fire arrived. They with Bowater and Cain doing cpr.

Life support paramedics within minute took over cpr.

Left and took Sahota's van back to vpd.

Later that night gave audio interview to iio.

Trained in long gun, mag capacity, more bullets.

Started Shift at 6:45 AM. Briefing, social activities Sgt gives call sign.

Working by self that day.

Just after 3 PM. Was at Dairy Queen 6-1 coffee break for kids day.

Heard call at 3:20
For male spraying water, agitated

Didn't think anything about it. Just water spraying.

Heard Sahota call for cover units.
Others on Josh Wong and Nick Thompson, left for call.

They were "on health kick" and didn't eat ice cream

Bowater and Spencer then left for call.
Heard it ramping up so went as well.

He was dispatched at 3:20.

He went lights and sirens.

Gives long description of driving route he took. Very specific on every street and turn.

Seems confused on Marine Way or Marine Drive.

Can't say the Joffre address.

Shown Google map.
Then confirms it was Marine Drive not Way.

Parked car and exited. Observed set of stairs and a few police vehicles. Saw police wagon and 3 or 4 cars.

Proceeded up stairs. Heard sounds there. About 15 feet above eye level.

At top of stairs saw Folkestad. He looked disheveled.
Dirty, not himself.

Folkestad thought his Jaw was broke. Holding hand, thought broken.

Gravengard assisted Birzneck. Looked disheveled too.

Folkestad looked dazed, not the same.

Went past Folkestad. Also saw Josh Wong. Limping, not sure which side. Looked disheveled.
Asked him if he was OK.
Said, fine.

Says Wong has been in lot of car accidents. He works out with Wong every morning.

Saw open area on South side. Saw Bowater holding hobble.

Saw shirtless male on ground. Face down. Socks. Looked to be 180 pounds. Quite muscular.
Saw double handcuffs. Usually means large stature.
Saw Spencer on Myles right side, holding right arm. Chicken wing.

On left side was Cain. Also chicken wing. Cain holding Myles down.

Police always try to find work to do.
Decided to help out. Bowater had feet on hobble strap
Mykes doing thrusters. Hip thrusters. Hips moving towards sky.
Hamstring curls.

Gravengard says he tries to work out as much as he can every week.

Put knees on Myles hamstring and calf. Right.

Right knee on right hamstring. Left knee on left calf.

Says Myles was quite strong
Says Myles had v shaped back.

Makes superhuman strength claim again.

Says Myles lifted him with hamstring curks. He fell off and had to reposition again.

Saw Myles spitting quite a bit. Lot of saliva.

What Myles was saying wasn't English. Inaudible.

Saw Spencer at eye level
With himself.

Myles spitting to his right.

Noticed an injury. Not normal. Injury to bicep. Saw that after.

Was there for 4 to 6 minutes. No one behind him. Eventually paramedics were behind him.

Saw Tan behind him. Saw fire staged behind them.
Mykes face was red. Heavy breat
Chest rising up and down.
Breathing slowed. Myles went limp.

Didn't know what was going on. Knew Cain was ex-paramefic. Bowater ex-medic, military.

Had heard ALS on radio earlier.

As Myles went limp, someone checked pulse.

Someone took handcuffs off.

Myles put in recovery
Position.
Can't say which side.

Helped take off hobble.

Turned to back. Cpr started. Bowater doing chest compressions.

Paramedic and Cain were talking. Medical terms, he didn't understand.

He started holding 2 IV bags.
Someone brought defibrillator.

He is trained in that
As a taser operator.

Saw female paramedic.

Paramedic asked if taser was deployed. He said no. Saw no taser prongs out. He didn't use his.

Held IV for 7 to 10 minutes.

Someone took over for Bowater.

Paramedic said "no shock" referring to AAD.

Discussion of AAD pads.
Only remembers no shock advised.

Bicep. Saw bicep bruising in a big lump. Usually means hit with an object.

Gave up IV bags. Left scene.

Went back down. Took notes when things had settled down a bit for himself.

Written in notebook.

Talked to Sgt Sidhu.

Iio came.
Talked to Sgt again. He needed ride back to VPD to meet on 7th floor.

Sgt said not to talk to anyone.

Saw Sahota for first time. Didn't se her on scene.

"We joked around a bit."

She was bandaged.

Saw everyone there he has seen on scene.

Had some food and beverages
Talked about how they felt.
Can't recall IIO.

Q. Any discussion about what happened.
A. Pretty sure we did. Had done that after 2011 riot.

Gave statement to IIO on August 15.

Q did you notice gargling sound.
A. Couldn't tell you. Inaudible words. Can't recall.

A. Doesn't recall any blood. Didn't really focus on the blood.
Spit was mostly in front or to right.
Saw face going back and forth.

Q. About muscles, movement.
A. Muscles were tense and quite large. Large calfs.

Hands clenched. Seemed tense the whole time through.
Very muscular.

Remembers Myles head facing west.
Felt Mykes was more North than the photo depicts. More towards center of lawn.

First assessment when seeing Myles. Threat level was very low. Already in handcuffs.

Q. Any discussions about end goal
Priority was to get ALS there. But no plan.

Cocaine psychosis or excited delirium.

Would use taser to create window of opportunity. Even if on cocaine or excited delirium. But he was restrained.

Explains training on excited delirium. Drugs and mental health.
Hard to control
Or even talk with them.

Can't use deescalation on someone with excited delirium.

Hard to reason with them.

A. Cycle teaing 4 times a year. Can't remember when he got it.

Has had trainings on excited delirium and taser use though.

Can be flammable when taser is deployed.

Do have traing on mental health. Seems like mental health issues are something prevalent now.

Police officer for 15 years.
Operations division, team 2 district 1.

On day qualified for baton, oc, beanbag shotgun, taser, firearm.

Shotgun was in vehicle. Had firearm and oc on him.

Deescalation training. Whatever the department has.
Believes he had crisis and deescalation. Can't recall exactly.

Intoxication training. Standard from JIBC. Cycle training in department.

When call came in plainclothes with Cst London.
Mobile command center.
Brought out at large events.

They were parking it a lot at VPD hq.
Didn't respond to initial call. Too far away.

Heard another call for cover from other response unit. Birzneck and Folkestad. Sounded stressed and urgent. "This guys challenging us."

Challenge is a triggering word.

Told partner we have to go.

Responded code 3.
Lights and siren
Not in any way close but still responded.
Not paying attention to broadcasts.

Some stuck out. Fighting. Into custody. Still fighting. Unresponsive. Need ehs with sedation. Cone to. Fighting again. Something about a tree.

Had only been in district about 4 months. Knew general
Area. Partner told him wrong way. Had to turn around. Came in North of Joffre.

Approximately 3 pm. Didn't put himself on scene. Immediately parked middle of street, got out went down street.

Saw Folkestad in ambulance. Blood on head. Dazed.

Moved on.
Saw Stokes controlling
Traffic.

Went up.
Saw Birzneck. Went by him. He was huffing and puffing.

Saw paramedics and fire. Saw Sgt Jackel.

Standing at Myles feet.

Recognizes scene.

Birzneck huffing and puffing. Down below retaining wall.

Saw paramedics and fire in upper area.
Sgt Jackel and Cst Bowater were in middle of upper area.

Stood for couple of seconds. Tried to figure out what was important now.

Myles was yelling but not words.
A loud growl.
On stomach, back to him.
Double cuffed. Head tilted towards right shoulder. Red on face, grunting
Left elbow at midsection, flapping up and down.
Moved to side placed knee near Myles torso. Recently trained in this. Straightened arm on elbow. Held it for 2 minutes. Know idea in truth how long he held it.
Myles continued to rock. Dent is 200 pounds.
Says Myles could lift him
Said this person is incredibly string.
Lifted upper body while he had hand on elbow.
Literally lifting up my body.
Impressed with this.

Now says he misspoke about custody. He meant control since Myles was already handcuffed.
Wanted to assist officers holding Myles
Doesn't know how many were there.
Everyone was doing a task.
London had told him during the drive that Cain had been paramedic.

Dent had thought it was psychosis or excited delirium beforehand

First time he met Cain.

Held Myles for up to 2 minutes then all resistance stopped
Cain said roll him on his side.
Rolled Myles on his side.
Cain started sternum rub. Said "wake up."

Bowater came in. Knew him and that he was a paramedic.

Found handcuffs key and unlatched one. His key broke off in handcuff.

Believes Bowater started first aid.
Cain called
For paramedics.

Dent had walked DTES beat. Seen many overdoses.

At this point disengaged.

Left and went to care for Birzneck who said he was fine.
Birzneck said Myles hit Folkestad so hard. Clocked him.
Says Birzneck is most well rounded officer he's worked with. Negotiator.
Set up crime scene tape at top and bottom of street.
Took firearms from officers going to hospital 4 firearms. Sahota, Wong, one other.
Everyone stunned.

Sahota stunned, holding elbow. Fighting back tears.
Folkestad didn't know where he was.

Dent suspected pepper spray.
Folkestad looked through him.

Made notes, not whole narrative. Went code 3, grabbed elbow. Times he took firearms, when he put them in car.

Says Folkestad told him guy punched me in the Jaw.

Encountered Thompson with gauze on head.

Saw Myles on his stomac
Saw Myles on ground, not sure if handcuffed.

Aggressive growling noise, kicking feet.

Can't recall where exactly. Says face down then changes to belly down.

Saw Birzneck standing. Other officers can't recall. Didn't see hobble.

Folkestad crawled towards him crying. Said Myles was very strong.

Myles was face up on back. Birzneck was beneath him.

Myles was bucking and bronking like a horse.

Wong took out the hobble. Meant to be used on ankles, near feet.

It is noted that they have a support worker with them. Coroner mentions they neglected to identify this yesterday when Cst Sahota also had someone present who was not named.
Folkestad was a patrol officer at the time.

Responded to Code 3 Cover for CSt Sahota.

A. Plainclothes with partner Birzneck.

Call for disturbance. Didn't seem like a big thing.

First witness is Muhammed Reza who initiated the 911 call and spoke with the dispatcher.

He followed Myles Gray up to his first contact with police and saw two plainclothes officers pursue Myles into the yard on Joffre.
Now playing 911 call. Operator told dispatch there were no weapons, no physical violence. Suggested he was "erratic." Told he was shirtless and shoeless.
