The GoI is looking at hydropower to keep its net zero pledge.

Arunachal Pradesh will sign 13 MoUs for such projects. While this will help tap its hydropower potential, the human + ecological costs are high.

🤔Is the push for more 🌊power projects in Arunachal justified?

🧵1/6 Image
Some say 🇮🇳 has to catch up.

- 🇮🇳 has developed only 29% of its total 🌊power potential. The govt says Arunachal has the highest untapped potential.

- Once dams are up and running, surplus power can be transmitted to other states and help generate revenue for Arunachal.

2/6
- It entails economic incentives for locals. Popular newspapers have cited unnamed officials saying such projects will help prevent a water war with 🇨🇳through its control of upstream dams.

3/6
But is that a sound rationale?

- Hydropower projects aren't cheap, and experts have questioned the financial viability of these large dams.

- Arunachal's geography is fragile. It's prone to flash floods and landslides and is home to many endangered species.

4/6
- For the locals, hydropower projects are a threat to their livelihood. The recent opposition to the proposed Siang River project is evidence of that.

Should the Hindu community be given ‘minority status’ in Jammu and Kashmir? 🧵

When the Home Ministry consulted the National Commission for Minorities (NCM) over it, the commission said it'll be a valid measure if the law is enacted and the Supreme Court agrees.

1/7 Image
The issue was brought to the apex court’s attention last year, but the debate is quite old: can the Hindu majority community be deemed a religious minority in any part of the country?

The issue runs coterminous with the debate over who should identify such minorities.

2/7
Some say it’s a valid ask.

1️⃣ Petitioners ask to recognise Hindus as a religious minority in states where they are a numerical minority.

Articles 29 & 30 of the Constitution provide a charter for religious minorities to be recognised at all levels, not just the Centre.
