'Suletta has had no character development unlike Guel!'
...lol. Anime viewers are about to encounter, for the first time, the concept of the *character* as the mystery. This is not ultra-rare in books, but in anime it's not very frequent. #G_Witch
The majority of characters encounter mysteries and try to solve them, learning about them at the same time/pace as the viewers. Suletta's the mystery herself; that's why you don't, for most episodes, know what she knows.
Ep12 lets you know that something's wrong with her, recontextualizing her previous actions and entire personality. It lets you know that there's something she isn't telling the viewers.
Guel is a more conventional, more formulaic character (so much so he has a counterpart in Code Geass--you've seen all this before). He's an open book, and it's not a very thick book at that.
He's such a stock type that he has a counterpart in mainline Geass AND the Geass spin-off Akito the Exiled. 'Aristocratic snobby/rich pilot who loses a fight and then becomes a series punching bag until he learns to become a better person' is not exactly innovative.
Suletta's been kept pretty opaque because of the mystery element; now that we're past that, we're going to see more 'into' her, so to speak. She's a very rare character type; compared to Guel, she's super fresh, super novel.
I'll also offer that Suletta is not written defensively. Sunrise and Okouchi don't give a fuck if you think she's 'a Mary Sue'--the way she's narratively placed etc makes it very clear she's equal to any male protagonist. She doesn't have to 'justify' her existence.
She's an incredible pilot, and doesn't need to start from the bottom and climb up. You know. Just like a lot of competent male protagonists in any mecha or shounen series. Hell, male harem protagonists get women falling for them left and right, so...

Personally if someone points out that my trans anthology has 0 trans women, I wouldn't start going around calling people 'biological males' but that's just me.
The editor including their own story is honestly tacky, but also lol 14 contributors and they couldn't scare up even a single trans woman.
Some notes 1) it's true there are very few trans women writing YA in trade pub. The editor could've reached out to trans women without trade book deals though. I spot at least one contributor in the list who doesn't have book deals at all, so that's not a requirement
Wait... Snake's sword is definitely NOT Nordic lol. Don't think the manga ever touches on where he got this, or where he was really from.
This episode was hard to watch, Arnheid's seiyuu is really good and the crying is hard to listen to, man. Not looking forward to the bit where she, you know, gets beaten so bad she miscarries.
