A resolution for ‘end Jew hatred day’ just passed in @NYCCouncil. The resolution’s name is set up to make it impossible to oppose—after all, who wouldn’t oppose anti-Jewish hate? But there’s more to the story here…so let’s talk about the org & people behind the resolution...
🧵
The group behind the ‘end Jew hatred day’ resolution is…wait for it…End Jew Hatred. The org’s head is Brooke Goldstein, who is also: head of the Lawfare Project (a far-right pro-Israel legal advocacy org); a vocal Trump supporter; regular guest on Fox News, Newsmax, OAN. etc…
To understand just how right-wing Brooke Goldstein is, and the kind of Islamophobic, racist, & misogynistic garbage she has been pushing for over a decade, see this video of her talking about Huma Abedin.
*Content warning - it’s upsetting* rightwingwatch.org/post/fox-panel…@RightWingWatch
Brooke Goldstein claims to be a civil rights advocate, but she uses lawsuits to advance a far-right agenda that does nothing to make Jews safer. At the Lawfare Project, she uses lawsuits to prevent people from exercising the right to boycott Israel, even just the settlements.
Brooke Goldstein isn’t the only right-wing activist pushing the council’s ‘End Jew Hatred’ resolution. Also pushing it is Dov Hikind, an ex-member of the Jewish Defense League, a terrorist group founded by the extremist rabbi Meir Kahane.
Until recently, Dov Hikind was a staunch Trump supporter. He has also: advocated for law enforcement profiling of Muslims; opposed same-sex marriage and memorializing non-Jewish Roma, disabled, and LGBTQ people persecuted in the Holocaust; and most infamously, worn blackface.
Other supporters are using the resolution to support rolling back an actual civil rights victory to limit pre-trial detention of those who can’t afford bail.
Listen to this testimony using the appeal to ‘end Jew hatred’ as an excuse to undo bail reform:
Lots of people want to take action against antisemitism! That’s why a lot of CMs voted for this resolution. But Brooke Goldstein, Dov Hikind & their Kahanist friends are using folks' genuine desire to combat antisemitism to legitimize themselves & advance their far-right agendas.
This resolution isn't about Jewish safety or civil rights—if it were we’d be applauding it/helping pass it!
But at best, this resolution is a symbolic gesture that helps to launder the reputations of & build credibility for far-right activists. Again: that doesn't make us safer.
Council members like @ShahanaFromBK & @SandyforCouncil care deeply about Jewish safety & combating bigotry of all kinds. They know this resolution is a symbolic gesture that lets politicians congratulate themselves w/o having to take meaningful action to protect our communities.
Rather than slamming CMs who looked at this resolution, saw where it came from, and—knowing they'd be attacked for their principled stance—decided they couldn’t support an initiative led by open proponents of bigotry, we should focus on materially combating antisemitism & hate.
JFREJ is proud to work with CMs taking meaningful action to end hate violence. In 2019 we convened the #NYCAgainstHate coalition & developed a policy framework calling for investment in a restorative community-based approach to all forms of hate violence: static1.squarespace.com/static/5e1b96b…
Great to be out in the streets with our friends from @jvpliveNY and more to rally around an end to the ADL’s role supporting militarized policing — and the collective power we exhibit when we speak out.
We’re looking at the vent diagrams @onespacefor created for #UnravelingAntisemitism. A vent is the overlap of 2 statements that appear to be both true & contradictory
We used them to capture the complexity of the multiple truths we want ppl who see & discuss the print to explore
Jewish liberation is critical to unlocking collective liberation, that’s why we should fight for it! AND, Jewish liberation is critical to liberating Jews - that alone makes it important!
Most U.S. Jews today are read as white and benefit from whiteness. AND, the growing white nationalist movement doesn’t believe Jews are white.
This week we released #UnravelingAntisemitism, a new visual work of art and discussion guide inspired by our 2017 “Understanding Antisemitism” paper. Today we’re breaking down the historical moments captioned in the poster, beautifully collaged by @katzcomics
The Roman Empire saw Jews as a backwards tribe, unwilling to accept Jesus and assimilate into imperial culture. The state made it illegal to convert to Judaism, illegal for Jews and Christians to intermarry, and illegal for a Jew to hold office or testify in court.
Medieval rulers often barred Jews from owning land/joining trade guilds. Jews became overrepresented as tax collectors/money lenders for Christians w/ power. Everyday Christians often blamed Jews for harsh interest rates/taxes. That's where stereotypes of Jews and $ originate.
@FEWCoalition is outside Gov. Cuomo's office in Midtown, celebrating Easter--a holiday of renewal--to ask "What have you sacrificed? While we were expected to sacrifice *everything*, working during the pandemic."
20 days without food; a year without relief. @AndreaSCousins@CarlHeastie we continue to look to you to deliver a fully accessible worker bailout fund.
"I want everyone to close their eyes and imagine what it will feel like when this Excluded Worker Fund is real, when we have won, when families no longer have to kill themselves with work day by day... This is a holiday about hope." - @AngeMariaSolis
Today’s the last day of Passover, which means Mimouna starts tonight! We wish we could all be together for Mimouna this year, but we’ll reminisce on our 2019 Mimouna celebration.
Drawing from the Moroccan and North African tradition of inviting Jewish and Muslim neighbors to celebrate Mimouna, the event included the @ArabAmericanNY and @DesisRisingUp, our partners in the fight against white nationalism.
The evening included an abundance of Arab sweets, mint tea, a live band, and a radical Moroccan DJ.
There's a long history of falsely portraying Jews as disease-carriers. Consider how you may be accepting or even fueling that narrative right now.
But asking people to wear masks during a pandemic is not antisemitic, & making false accusations of antisemitism doesn't help Jews.
The ultimate goal is public health. Whether or not you personally think it’s antisemitic to single out or focus on Orthodox communities, the bottom line is that stigmatizing doesn’t work! We need culturally competent education, community partnerships, testing, and tracing.
From Pro-Trump rallies in Staten Island to partiers in SoHo to the streets of Borough Park, anyone refusing to wear a mask/socially distance is recklessly putting themselves, their community & everyone they come into contact with at risk.
