I've noticed a new worrying trend of how Russian propaganda is leaking into Poland and how Poles slowly turn against Ukrainians. I heard it in person too, but let me use one example which, I think, will make a good case study (a 🧵):
1. This is a Facebook profile of a Polish transport industry portal. The article talks about a fleet of new Iveco light trucks for the Ukrainian government presented at the picture of the bodybuilder in Kiyv. The author points out to the destroyed building in the background. Image
2. The most common reaction to this post is... laughter:

What is so funny for the Polish commenters? Let's browse the comments: Image
3. "Yeah! Ukrainians are throwing money left and right, our country buys grain from Oligarchs who make businesses with the West, everyone is making money out of it only poor Pole pays!" - writes Marek Image
4. "For those flip-flops this war is like a miracle from heaven, instantly everyone is rich there, even too rich. Close the borders, throw away all foreigners to Ukraine, then in Poland everything will gets better in no time!" - says Dawid Image
5. (There is certain irony that he uses "klapek" - which stands for "flip flop" for Ukrainian person. A "flip-flop" is a derogatory term used by British trucking industry for eastern european drivers, although I am not sure if those two have the same root)
6. "Just look how many artics with [fuel] tankers runs to Szczecin and back. And those are new Volvo, Scanias and Mercedes, not the cheapest ones. But apparently one has to show off during the war too!" - observes Damian Image
7. "They abolished all taxes, so the economy can grow even during the war" - suspects Michał Image
8. "Cool "war" - says Jack.

"Not too violent" - seconds Dawid. Image
9. "They are milking us the most from the whole EU" - says Tomasz, obviously a true patriots - judging from his avatar. Image
10. "I can see in the comments that Poles open their eyes. When they will finally take action?" asks Tomasz, although he fails to define what kind of "action" he has in mind. Image
11. "Business is going well. But who's going to drive it, if everyone are at the front, protecting European borders?" - wonders Kamil Image
12. "Those Ukrainians must be crazy. SO TERRIBLE WAR, and they are buying brand new company cars and park them just a few metres from the place that is bombared so heavily?" - Michał tries to do some deeper analysis. Image
13. "They are driving all over Europe, without permits, checks, standards, taxes. More than 50% brand new trucks bought those Bandera's grandchildren and Poles feel sorry for them. They fuck us in the arse and laugh in our faces" - decides Piotr. Image
14. I think you get the gist of it now. Of course, there were some positive comments too, but those are rare, I would say one for every 10 like this one. The Ukrainians from the bodybuilder company also came and posted a picture of one of the trucks those are to replace: Image
15. But this is not my point. My point is, that I see it more and more often - and also hear from some Poles I recently spoke with - that after that ridiculous attempt to spread conspiracy theory that war is fake bbc.com/news/world-eur…
russian propaganda took new approach:
16. So, apparently, the war is not "that" bad, and Ukrainians just make the most to benefit financially from the Western generosity, of course mostly at the expense of poor Poles, as if our poor nation haven't suffered enough from Banderists during Vohlyn massacres...
17. All the failings of the Polish government (like recent scandal with the grain imports which happen due to Polish government incompetence and the fact that the grain, instead going to Africa as planned, ended up flooding Polish market) are (unfairly) blamed on Ukraine.
18. Of course the Polish government has no interest to debunk those lies, as to do that they would have to admit it was THEIR fault. Moreover, while it's true the Polish government did a lot to help Ukraine, it did much less than the Polish population did on its own
19. The amazing response to the Ukrainian refugee crisis for example, for which the Polish government is so keen to take credit, was possible only due to the enormous effort of the army of volunteers, NGO's and grasroot organizations
20. (About a year back I made a podcast about that response, if you are interested it's available also in English thanks to help I got from the crew of @WCountryVoices: )
21. So, basically speaking, the government will do nothing to prevent spread of that propaganda, as with election coming, they are afraid that if they stand up for Ukraine, their voters would move to extreme right Konfederacja party that is pounding anti-Ukrainian crap already.
22. I find this very dangerous. As this is, obviously, aimed at the Western population to be less keen in providing support for the Ukraine - as if the war is "not so bad" and Ukrainians just splash Wester money on new toys - in this case trucks - then why a Westerner,
23. Or even more, a poor Pole, should be sending them his own hard earned money?

And, by the way, do you know what those Iveco vans are needed for? Those won't be used to drive around Europe to undercut poor Polish hauliers. Those vans are delivered for the Ukrainian government
24. departament that is responsible for maintaning critical communication infrastructure. While those might not be tanks, those vehicles will be doing crucial work for the war effort...

🧵After Russia shat itself with Biden permitting (well too late) Ukraine to strike military targets deep inside Russia with his weapons, some of the people got a little bit panicky, including some of my friends. Here is a little thread for them: (1)
I don’t blame my friends. Not everyone keeps close tabs on the political situation, and the internet is full of Russian propaganda, propagated both by Russian bots and useful idiots in the West. (2)
As I studied related subject at the university, some of my friends come to me to hear my opinion, this is what I told one of them yesterday:
- No, it is irrelevant that Russia “announced a new nuclear doctrine”. (3)

My dad's friend used to live in Magnitogorsk. He was a journalist in the Soviet Union who met and married a Russian woman and they moved there in Gorbatchev times.

He sometimes visited us when returning to Poland, and I recall one story he told us in the 1990s.

🧵

1/x
In the 1990's the life in Russia was even more shit than today, many elderly people were literally starving. So in Magnitogorsk they had some allotments, which were quite big, and grannies and grandpas were cultivating potatoes there and so on.

But as the crime was rampant, 2/x
it was not uncommon that they were coming to their allotment only to find the fruits of their labour stolen - which meant they will be going hungry for the winter.

This happened to one elderly guy one time too much, so he got pissed and decided to mine his allotment. 3/x

I am watching a movie clip about Elon Musk's Tesla Cyber cab and I am going to tell you why it is a completely stupid vehicle.

Yeah, here we go again, I just had a Deja Vu moment:

This guy just don't understand vehicles that are not toys should. 🧵
(1) So, let's start from the beginning: what would you like your Taxi cab to be?
- a boxy, shaped vehicle that is easy to get in and get out, accessible also to elderly and people on wheelchairs, that can take you and your friends or family from A to B? Image
(2) Or a two-seater sporty-looking coupe with gullwing-style doors that even under 1.90 m tall Elon Musk has to duck to get into and where you seat almost at vehicle's floor?

I can't see my elderly dad who is 2m tall and has knee problems, being able to use it. Image

I left UK two years ago today. This is the last picture I have taken on British soil. Why would I take a picture of a van in Dover, the place I drove a van through hundreds of times? Because I was bored and had too much time on my hands

A threat🧵 Image
During my 18 years in Scotland, most of the time I worked as a truck driver. But for some 5 years, during my gap year, through the rest of my studies and for some time after, I worked as a van driver for a company doing time-critical deliveries all over EU and beyond. /1 Image
I drove to over 20 countries in Europe, from France to Norway and from driving all the way somewhere to Croatia to delivering to the top of Stirling castle:

Spoke with one of my friends in Glasgow today.

She's planning to return to Poland. According to her, EU people are moving back to EU left and right as "everything in Britain is collapsing". Some of our common friends are also planning to or have already moved. 1/x
- she says she is the only person in her work who still has access to a dentist, as dentist surgeries are so overwhelmed they refuse to see patients even privately
- she says that the rents in Battlefield, where we both used to live, are so high that people who earned... 2/x
...much more than we used to some years back can't afford to live there
- "Everything is so bloody expensive that even though I make 60 000 in my current job I feel just as when I was making less than 35 000 in the last one" she said.

Someone reminded me of that thread today, so ill tell you something.

I live in Finland now. Some time ago I left my job hoping to get another one. It didn't worked out and I became unemployed.

(A secondary thread).
After looking for a job for some time I went to local equivalent of Job Centre as I found online that unemployed people might get free language courses. 1/
The lady gave me proper bollocking for not claiming my job seekers allowance. I told her it must be mistake, how can I be entitled to job seekers allowance if it was me who quit a job and if I haven't worked in Finland even one full year yet. 2/
