This applies to all the industry guilds. Even more so than in the past, in recent years, I have talked to many people who have lost their insurance, come close to losing insurance, or who have had to exit Hollywood entirely, because they could not make rent or pay bills.
A relevant point that may seem like inside baseball, but could have major implications for the #writersstrike: DGA usually goes first in negotiations with studios. This time they let the WGA go first, because I think the DGA also sees the existential threats to their membership+
I have covered a number of strikes/near strikes in Hollywood & I think other guilds — DGA & SAG — ending up on picket lines is quite possible this cycle. overwhelming yes votes on strike authorizations from WGA this year & IATSE last year, those were v revealing #writersstrike

honestly gutted so much HBO/Max fare (incl Gordita Chronicles, Love Life, Minx, Batgirl in addtn to WW etc--many from marginalized creatives--canceled, unreleased or DISAPPEARED (at least for now). Hard not to wonder if it's a shot across the bow re DGA/WGA contracts coming up
I am a galaxy brain industry executive, hear me out
1 give people LESS content
2 make it MORE monochromatic
3 piss off the people who create the content
4 ???
5 profit!!!!
I have a newsletter (info below); it's 1 way to find me & my work, also on instagram (moryan66 there) & moryan.com Genuine love to you weirdos, there was some yikes stuff on here sometimes, but I met & talked & liked & loved a lot of ya & damn you made me laugh 💚🌺
Just one of many deserving possible mentions: Les Revenants (the Returned). French zombies (maybe)? I mean, no real idea what was going on a lot of the time but it was insanely great on atmospheric/**vibes only** levels (if you're looking for something like that, it's on AMC+)
First episode of Les Revenants has one of the best opening sequences I've ever seen on any show, ever. true rev-heads understand.
By the way if you're looking for vibes &/or those Station 11 feels, I really liked Moonhaven, also on AMC+. Not in the class of Les Revenants (nothing is), does not quite reach S11's highest heights, but nicely earnest & weird & often in a very gently strange sf lane that I love.
What David is saying here, wisely & calmly (as always) -- I've been delving into & thinking about them a lot for my forthcoming book. I'm very aware I'm trying to hit a moving target (the industry changes so much constantly) but ... agree this is all def concerning. Anyway. 🧵
Can't stop thinking abt the ol' bait & switch: Creative people were told streaming would be different therefore $$ a LOT different (LESS generally + shorter runs etc). And now streamers are chasing ads & making it 2009 again thru science or magic. Ain't paying folks like 2009 tho
2012: u write on a TV show w 13 or 22 ep season, get weekly fee plus episodic fee. Also get a nice residual each time the ep is rerun on air.
2022: often a 6-8 ep season, never set foot on set, residuals not much more than spare change in yr couch. otherwise perfect/awesome!!
SOME NEWS: I'm 🔥writing 🔥a 🔥book 🔥about 🔥Hollywood: Burn It Down. I'm SO excited to share this news! The announcement:
It's a deeper dive into the work I've been doing for years: Talking about patterns & norms that lead to (& nearly ensure) problems of all kinds. It'll also have a lot to say about proposed (& actual) solutions to major Hollywood issues. Input from many, many industry sources.
I've been quiet on the socials for a few reasons, but one reason is, I've been working on a thing... thread incoming.
I had one of the more interesting (and at times, challenging) conversations of my career last week. I had heard a rumor: Was Jeff Garlin fired from the ABC comedy The Goldbergs? For some time, I could not pin down what was going on.
I contacted a lot of reps/PR, including ABC and Sony (which makes the show, which is in its 9th season). Could not get an answer to an (I thought) simple query: Is he employed by the show or not? I did connect with some ex-Goldbergs employees during the course of all this.
