it's pretty remarkable that a former president of the united states and likely Republican candidate in 2024 has multiple well-attested sexual assault claims against him and the media largely treats it as a page 6 story.
'donald trump, who has been accused by multiple women of rape' is something that could, you know, be prominent in every story.
the problem is that even a mildly accurate presentation of Donald Trump would completely turn the reader against him, and this does not sit with the broken brains of U.S. political coverage
like, do you think there will be a question at the CNN Town Hall about it?

you have to think of Chinese stuff like this as being as much about extracting money/jobs from the PRC for the participants as it is actually achieving any goal overseas.
we are however seeing a lot more straightforwardly racist/anti-lgtbq content from sources like this, in imitation of both Russia and right-wing parties in the West.
Beside the practical problems it’s actively against the interests of major subscription based media for this to happen because hitting the paywall repeatedly is why people subscribe a lot of the time
Would I prefer to pay the Atlantic a buck a time for the two dozen or so articles I really want to read there a year? Sure, but that’s not in the Atlantic’s interest and there’s way more people in my situation (will pay the $80) than who would pay $20 instead of $0.
There’s quite a few who would pay $1 a year to read one article but once you’ve factored costs in you need like 200 of these theoretical dudes to replace one subscriber.
a lot of people responding are saying that we had to legalize it because people were still doing it when it was illegal, but you know what keeping it illegal did? greatly limited it and prevented it being advertised, especially to teens
it made it *hard* to gamble if you wanted to gamble in any way other than putting twenty bucks in with your friends, which was good; it should be *hard* to gamble because gambling is massively addictive and destructive
instead not only was it legalized but it became a source of massive corporate and lobbying power. just a poisonous industry.
the amount of time this review dedicates to complaining that the book being reviewed is not sympathetic to Edgar Smith, who raped and murdered a 15-year-old - and then went on to commit many more crimes - is remarkable.
his complaint seems to be that the telling of this story might make life harder for others, and therefore it shouldn't be told. but maybe, just maybe, the women Smith murdered and assaulted also deserve to have their stories told?
his takeaway appears to be that Smith, who raped and murdered a 15-year-old, sexually assaulted a 10-year-old, and who, upon leaving prison, went on to attempt to murder another woman was 'talented and damaged' and that the author prejudged him by calling him a sociopath
you remember that film scene a while back where, like, an evil monster lady walks out of a lake and a dude is like 'I have no qualms here' when she wants to do it. it was a documentary.
article idea for one of you teen vogue etc types: get online using AI generated pictures with obviously inhuman elements and see how many guys swipe right anyway.
this is actually how we know fae and vampires aren't real because if they were the guys with the ability to go 'hmmm too many teeth' would dominate the gene pool.
