In today's #dailysoup, I'll introduce the current Sultan of Johor, Sultan Ibrahim Ismail. He is known for his versatile business investments and "reclamation projects, including the controversial Princess Cove and Forest City.
1/20
Sultan Ibrahim Ismail is the son of Sultan Iskandar, who served as a Sultan of Johor and a Yang di-Pertuan Agong (monarch) of Malaysia before his death in 2010.
This is why his full name is Sultan Ibrahim Ismail ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar.
2/20
Although Sultan Ibrahim Ismail succeeded his father as the Sultan of Johor in January 2010, he was officially coronated in March 23, 2015.
3/20
As a part of Sultan Ibrahim's "Iskandar Malaysia" development plan, he managed to promote improvements in Johorean economic development, education, sports development, and even cultural development.
4/20
Moreover, Sultan Ibrahim, despite his allowance of RM27,000, invested in many businesses such as a telecom company, retail stores, technology companies, energy companies, and a KL shopping centre named "Berjaya Times Square".
5/20
However, Sultan Ibrahim has been involved in a few controversial projects, including the Princess Cove project near the Malaysia-Singapore causeway, as well as "reclamation projects" at the Strait of Johor, with one of them being Forest City.
6/20
In December 2013, Sultan Ibrahim sold 116 acres of land at Tanjung Puteri, just beside the Malaysia-Singapore causeway, to Guangzhou-based R&F Properties for RM4.5B, entering a joint venture with the company. This is now known as the Princess Cove project.
7/20
However, Sultan Ibrahim was grilled by the Malaysian public about how the sale of Princess Cove "suddenly doubled to RM4.5B", especially when the land was previously owned by the local government of Johor when it bought the land for RM200M. His response was vague.
8/20
Moreover, Sultan Ibrahim's Princess Cove happened during the time when the number of mainland Chinese real estate projects in Malaysia rose, especially coz they were looking for cleaner air and a more affordable alternative to Singapore. Hence,...
9/20
...this sparked concerns among Malaysians of an "increase in rent prices", while some expressed concerns that Sultan Ibrahim is "selling a piece of Johor to China".
He tried to defend his business deals by saying "I buy shares. I sell shares. I study about shares".
10/20
Meanwhile, Sultan Ibrahim is also known for being the initiator of a BRI project called Forest City.
Despite generating jobs and investments for the Malaysian state of Johor, the BRI project became a white elephant. Read more here:
Especially when Forest City is a BRI project involving a Chinese firm, Malaysian media hid the fact that one of Forest City's developers is Esplanade Danga 88, owned by Sultan Ibrahim, by stating that the project is a JV...
12/20
...between the Chinese firm and KPRJ, which owns only 20% of Sultan Ibrahim's company.
Citing the reasons related to "it's good for the Johorean economy", Sultan Ibrahim and his associates were known for allowing Forest City to bypass basic approval x regulatory measures.
13/20
Sultan Ibrahim, while claiming to "emphasise the importance of environmental issues", accused Putrajaya for "meddling on Johor's affairs" when Forest City ironically received flak for environmental degradation.
14/20
Moreover, a Malaysian insider discovered that workers in the project defied Forest City's 2014 suspension by continuing the construction of the project.
Other concerns on Forest City include its proximity to a rival port and its obstruction of the Strait of Johor.
15/20
Meanwhile, Sultan Ibrahim is also involved in other reclamation projects in Johor, including Benalec Holdings reclamation projects at Penarang, located E of Singapore, and Tanjung Piai, located W of Singapore.
16/20
Moreover, Sultan Ibrahim is involved in a reclamation project at Muar, located just SE of Malacca.
However, the 2022 Johor State election distracted Malaysian officials from checking the project as a part of due diligence, so the project went through without going...
17/20
...through formal approval x regulatory measures, while public consultation on the project was virtually absent.
Moreover, the Muar project faced concerns related to environmental degradation, especially to fisherfolk living in Muar.
18/20
Meanwhile, Sultan Ibrahim and the Johor royal family have been in a long-time dispute with former Malaysian PM Mahathir Mohamad, prolonged by issues like the Malaysia-Singapore dispute on Pedra Branca Island and Najib's support of Sultan Ibrahim's "Iskandar Malaysia".
19/20
Then, after Mahathir accused Sultan Ibrahim for "selling a portion of Johor to China via Forest City", Sultan Ibrahim accused Mahathir for "putting political interests first before Malaysian interests".
In today's #dailysoup, let's go back to the SCS dispute as I'll introduce a disputed oil-abundant reef complex, the Luconia Shoal.
It is known for being a hotspot of maritime disputes between Malaysia, China, and Vietnam.
1/20
Malaysia's maritime EEZ, just located beside the western shores of Sarawak and Sabah, is overlapped by the EEZs of the Philippines, Brunei, Vietnam, and China.
This houses precious oil fields, as well as the Luconia and the James Shoals.
2/20
The Luconia Shoal is located near the Kasawari Gas Field, which was discovered in November 2011. It appears to contain three trillion cubic feet of gas resrouces, now being operated by Malaysian oil company, Petronas.
In today's #dailysoup, I'll introduce Indonesian writer, academic, and political analyst, Simon Saragih.
He's best known for being one of the so-called Indonesian "academics" tagged by @RadityoDharmaP as "those showing pro-Russia views".
1/19
During the 1990s and the 2000s, Saragih served in various positions, including field journalist, international desk editor, and as a member of the research and development department of notable Indonesian media outlet Kompas.
He is now serving as a senior journalist.
2/19
Saragih is also an author of biographies of a Dutch seminary teacher, a Dutch missionary, an Indonesian composer, as well as the biographies of Putin and Obama.
Meanwhile, he is also known for articles containing pro-CCP and pro-Russia peepotalking.
In today's #dailysoup, I'll introduce a Singaporean geopolitics x defence blog, Defense Politics Asia and its managing editor, Wyatt Mingji Lim.
They are known for excelling in mental gymnastics and anti-West x pro-Russia peepotalking.
1/27
Defense Politics Asia, based in Singapore, is founded by Wyatt Mingji Lim and an unspecified "partner" in 2017. He is serving as its "managing editor" since then.
Before I discuss about Defense Politics Asia, let's briefly tackle Wyatt's background.
2/27
During much of the 2000s, Wyatt served in the Singaporean Armed Forces, with his last military rank being a "First Sergeant".
Hence, he said in an interview that he is "just interested in geopolitics and military stuff".
In today's #dailysoup, I'll introduce an Indonesia-based Chinese-American podcaster, soc-med influencer, and historical revisionist, Carl Zha (@CarlZha).
He's known for his "Silk and Steel" podcast, as well as his anti-West, pro-CCP, and pro-Russia peepotalking remarks.
1/27
Zha was born in Chongqing, China, which he labelled as his hometown. Sometime during his adulthood, he spent some time in the United States, especially to study engineering at Caltech, but he eventually returned to China afterwards.
2/27
After spending some time in China, Zha married an Indonesian woman from Bali named Anindita (@BaliEarthSoul) in October 2020. Since then, Zha became a Chinese-American based in Bali, Indonesia.
In today's #dailysoup, I'll introduce Indonesian journalist and academic, Smith Alhadar.
He's best known for being a so-called "expert academic" spreading anti-West and pro-Russia peepotalking remarks.
1/19
Alhadar serves as a journalist x professional at an NGO named "Indonesian Society for Middle East Studies".
Moreover, the profiles of Alhadar claim that he is also an executive director of a think-tank called "Institute of Democracy and Education Indonesia".
2/19
Despite claims in Alhadar's profiles pointing to his position as "executive director of IDE Indonesia", I didn't see his name in the list of executive board members in IDE Indonesia's website.
In today's #dailysoup, I'll introduce Malaysian political analyst, activist, and NGO head, Chandra Muzaffar.
He's best known for heading Just International (@justworldtweets), which is flooded with blatant anti-West, pro-Russia, and pro-China peepotalking remarks.
1/23
Chandra's daughter, Samirah Muzaffar, was charged in 2019 for the "murder of Nazrin Hassan, the CEO of a Malaysian company, Cradle Fund". Three years later, in 2022, Samirah was acquitted of the murder charges.
2/23
Before his career in handling Just International, Chandra became one of the founders of "Aliran Kesedaran Negara", a multiethnic reform group in Malaysia established in 1977 aiming to address ethnic and democratic issues among Malaysians.
