1/ Buenas, #AVFC 🟣🔵 fam. Mateu Alemany’s expected arrival is a massive statement, a significant step for the future + prosperity of the club + after Unai Emery, he becomes the most important person within Villa’s operations + NSWE. A thread from your friendly, neighborhood LME:
2/ In order to build a successful club, three pillars are fundamentally needed, no matter the size, financial or geographical status:
Economical management, operational excellence and an innovative, constantly evolving footballing vision.
Alemany’s arrival, from a footballing
3/ aspect, touches on all three, but mainly on the third one, completing the double threat alongside Emery’s management. His background and the way he views success is due to his diverse professional background, which I’ll explain soon, but really— being at #AVFC 🟣🔵 means this:
4/…the club’s three pillars have never been stronger.
First off, it’s important to know that Alemany’s reputation is highly, highly respected across the continent. Quotes such as, “the other Messi of Barcelona,” and “the smartest man in football,” to my favorite:
5/“Many people shake the tree hoping for the fruit to fall. Not him, he goes right up and takes the apple that he wants.”
He made his mark at Real Mallorca, in 10 years, he went from assistant to CEO and President (only cause the actual president didn’t want him to leave)…
6/…at Mallorca, they won Copa del Rey alongside his greatest find at the time, Samuel Eto’o (which he sold to Barcelona and made a 20m profit) Before all of this, Florentino Pérez, fresh from winning Real Madrid presidency came knocking at his door, offering him the GM role…
7/…Alemany rejected it to stay at Mallorca. Despite the appointment of Héctor Cúper and still signing players, MA left Mallorca in 2005 but then returned years later after failing to win RSFF presidency. But his great, great work was notably with Valencia between 17-19.
8/ Alongside Marcelino, they turned a bottom-table club down on their luck into a top four giant and Copa del Rey winner. Execs fought with him on decisions and in the end, he left. The Barcelona tenure is a remarkable achievement because his post-Messi work has been KEY…
9/…towards success. Remember, this was during covid, Barcelona’s massive financial issues so Xavi’s tenure, key defensive players in the market (free) + other notable signings are foundations of his work. Laporta’s right hand man + his exit is a big loss for him and the club.
10/ So let’s talk Villa. Clearly the Premier League’s power comes in here as reportedly, this is a massive offer from NSWE, stating the intentions. In addition, the challenge of working in the PL appealed to Alemany, who is known to be an insanely driven competitor in ANYTHING…
11/…business, paddle ball, you name it lol. As @David_Ornstein reminds us, this doesn’t necessarily mean the end of Johan Lange as with Barcelona, MA and Jordi Cruyff worked well. Lange is appreciated at the club, given his data-driven knowledge. So we’ll have to wait and see.
12/ The key part here is his relationship with Unai Emery as they’re extremely similar. Emery usually arrives at Bodymoor 7am and doesn’t leave until 9pm + MA is of the same proverbial cloth. They’re workaholics + detailed driven, football people w/ a passion to identify and win.
13/ There is the obvious 🇪🇸 connection and this will influence the way the club brings in players. I’m expecting a lot of Spanish-based or continental talent this summer. Let’s not forget the relationships Alemany has built. Presidents of other clubs outside of 🇪🇸 respect him and
14/ he has built a catalogue of connections from all over after a long career.
Finally, I go back to the three pillars and why this is such a monumental win for Villa. The word is identity. Under Emery, Villa builds one on the pitch and now, under Alemany, it continues off it.
15/…I have been a supporter of this club for almost all my life and I don’t think I have been this excited about the project. #AVFC 🟣🔵 is a massive club, with a shining women’s team and a prosperous academy. A European champion with a vibrant community…
16/…the path towards Europe and beyond is firmly in place. With Mateu Alemany, Unai Emery, a determined, vision-driven NSWE and an energetic fanbase, the sky is the limit. The sky is claret and blue.
UTV 🟣🔵
17/ UPDATE on roles. It’s believed and reported that Lange will continue as sporting director and Alemany as Director of Football.
🟣🔵
18/ Thank you all for the kind words! Means a lot. Been trying to reply to all of you individually but now my day is full as hell lol. Muchísimas gracias! My aim is to always provide context and help facilitate information as well as show that optimism.
Jude Bellingham was no.1 in our list here for @ESPNUK, check it out
During the World Cup, after 🏴’s win over 🇸🇳, for our @ESPNFC show where @KayLMurray, @tomhamiltonespn and you’re truly wax lyrical over the Birmingham kid. Giving me Riquelme vibes
#AVFC 🟣🔵’s fanbase has a fantastic, dedicated, good-natured, smart group of content creators. I know because I have joined them on shows plenty of times. It’s a shame that our club helps this kind of toxic nonsense w/ great access instead of nurturing our own.
It’s also the continued frustration of why we don’t have an official Spanish-speaking account. That’s a Villa community desperate for representation 🟣🔵
Overall, I think PL clubs - not just Villa - should do better w/ local, production talent. Focused and obsessed w/ original content, which is totally fine, but they need to do more, way more to create stronger bridges w/ fanbase creators. Overall, it forms a healthier community.
1/ Alright, #AVFC 🟣🔵 fam. I’ve calmed down (and doing a hit on ESPN right after the game was not easy, let me tell you 😭) Here are my thoughts. They’re basically echoing Emery’s presser but I’ll give my own added notes. On the game itself, I thought it was the perfect example
2/ of how far we have come since UE arrived and how much more work we need to do. Positives are simple really. The two goals showed us that. There is a great sense of momentum when we have the ball and it’s showing. The second goal especially.
Individually: Watkins, Coutinho,
3/ McGinn, Moreno (as the game developed), Kamara and Durán (once again, I mean this boy has to start soon) demonstrated quality going forward. Bailey remains that potent piece of dynamite. He just has to be more disciplined.
1/ Unai Emery's arrival to #AVFC 🟣🔵 is an incredibly exciting time. I've already talked about his resume and tactics (see below) so this thread takes the proverbial microscope and looks at specific areas where I think he - alongside his staff - will help
2/ For a VERY long time now, Villa have been a team with either no identity or an inconsistent one. Most recently, Dean Smith's situation was a tough one because he was transitioning a Championship squad to the PL, with a heavy, heavy reliance on one player (Jack Grealish)...
3/...while Steven Gerrard's side was a group of talented individuals playing in the dark. Emery's obsessive focus on detail and his need for players to share this obsession will be an immediate wake up call for everyone. Their game's IQ will rise because of it. So straight away,
Finally done with #HouseoftheDragon and I gotta tell ya, there are many things about it that make me like it even more than GoT. Part of it is the single focus on one family, which is very Sopranos like. Other factors such as how the power revolves around two women who
had to fight so much to get what’s theirs. Performances: tremendous. As I’ve said before, all of them kick some serious ass, especially Matt Smith’s Daemon. Steals every scene. I will say, however, that Rhys Ifans’s Otto was marvelous. Emma D’Arcy kicks ass but i gotta say…
…Olivia Cooke. My god. What a performance. Killed it.
Great stuff. Can’t believe we have to wait so long. Filming doesn’t start till summer of next year 😭😭
