I’m at the Broadway-Lafayette station, where a crowd of people is protesting the killing of Jordan Neely on an F train yesterday.
Just watched police grab a man as he was spray painting a message on the subway tile. Here’s the crowd’s reaction.
Police just walked past with zip ties
This subway platform is packed with people. Note: if you’re planning to get on or off the subway at this stop, get out on one end or the other — not the middle of the platform.
Medical examiner’s office has ruled the death a homicide. That’s a medical term — not a legal one. Manhattan DA’s office says:
“This is a solemn and serious matter that ended in the tragic loss of Jordan Neely’s life. As part of our rigorous ongoing investigation…”
“we will review the Medical Examiner’s report, assess all available video and photo footage, identify and interview as many witnesses as possible, and obtain additional medical records. This investigation is being handled by senior, experienced prosecutors and we will provide…”
“an update when there is additional public information to share. The Manhattan D.A.’s Office encourages anyone who witnessed or has information about this incident to call 212-335-9040.”
More reporting on the Neely case from @Gothamist newsroom today: I spoke with Johnny Grima and James Kings, who stumbled onto the commotion Monday and say they regret not doing more, even though Neely wasn't moving by the time they saw him. gothamist.com/news/could-hav…
Yesterday, TN lawmakers passed a bill that makes it a felony to camp on state grounds — a direct response to a 60+ day movement protesting racial inequality & pleading w/ Gov. Bill Lee to discuss police and criminal justice reform. 1/x wpln.org/post/anti-prot…
My colleague, @SergioMarBel was tracking the developments inside the Capitol as lawmakers went back and forth about the bill, which also imposes harsher penalties for assaulting law enforcement officers & damaging state property. 2/x
Meanwhile, I was outside w/ the protesters, many of whom have been at the Capitol nearly every day for two months. Several had been arrested multiple times. One charged with a felony, for writing on state property with sidewalk chalk. 3/x
