The anatomy of religious conversion. That’s what I went to see in “The Kerala Story”. Why would Hindus willingly forsake a way of life that offers so much freedom to explore, encourages them to pursue knowledge & self-awareness but doesn't condemn non-followers to hellfire? (1)
As the movie showed, it’s the trusting, vulnerable, rootless, & utterly unsuspecting ones. This is one of the boldest movies ever made, and just like in #TheKashmirFiles it’s a film that needed to be made urgently, however flaw-ridden it might be. (2)
The scenes could have been way better imagined, the dialogues could have been crisper and it was jarring to hear Hindi being interspersed with Malayalam in family conversations. Yet, the overall premise of the movie is powerful enough to make one tolerate the inadequacies. (3)
We have all heard about a well-organized network to lure girls to become sex slaves for ISIS but to see a movie actually showing its execution in Kerala was most disturbing. I'd give the best actor tag to Asifa, the Hijabi roommate of the innocent Shalini, Gitanjali & Nimah. (4)
She uses every opportunity to plant fear, uncertainty & doubt in their minds about Hinduism & Christianity. The skillfulness with which she indoctrinates & traps victims while coming across as a friend and supporter should be seen by young adults across the world. (5)
“Girls wearing hijab do not get raped,” she declares. “Hellfire will feel 70 times hotter than any fire on Earth,” she says with finality. “Only Allah can save us from hellfire.” She keeps inviting roommates to her home where her family showers them with hospitality. (6)
How she gets two of the girls to willingly wear hijab is interesting. How attractive young men are used to seduce young Hindu women at an impressionable age when they crave romance is well portrayed. Zakir Naik’s videos are shown being used for brainwashing. (7)
The Christian roommate is shown resisting conversion better than clueless Hindu girls. Where persuasion doesn't work, drugs do the trick. The families broken by the conversion of girls make loud and clear what Swami Dayanand Sarasvati always said - conversion is violence. (8)
The helplessness of the police which cannot stop adults from converting or entering relationships is conveyed in the movie. “Bring us evidence we can act upon,” says a police officer. And the Christian character in the movie says even FIRs after rapes were not registered. (9)
The most striking moment for me is when Shalini-turned-Fatima finds herself in the stark barrenness of Afghanistan & wonders why she left the bountiful greenery of Kerala. The contrast in landscape felt like a metaphor for the contrast in philosophies and cultures. (10)
The scenes of violence against women in Afghanistan were credibly presented. But the escape of Shalini from the cave shelters felt contrived. I wish Sudipto Sen had learned from the realistic portrayal in Kamalahasan’s Vishwaroopam. Perhaps it was a matter of budget. (11)
The songs were good but background music was often aggravating. And now for the 32,000 Kerala girls whose bodies have been buried in Syria - surely that could have been cut out. The unproven number diverts attention away from the evil that needs to be discussed. (12)
Deceptive conversions are happening even without the purpose of recruiting into ISIS and that needs to be tackled urgently by society. Note that I am not in favour of calling every Hindu-Muslim marriage as Love Jihad. That trivializes the issue. (13)
I felt that if @vivekagnihotri had made the film, there would've been an added element of history. The trapping of girls to inflict a wound on society is not new. Rape has been a tool for subjugation & demographic change from medieval times, which could've been mentioned. (14)
A passing remark by a Maulvi held my attention. He scolded his protégés for not doing as good a job as their counterparts in Europe. “Over there, they are recruiting so many but here in India, you are struggling to get even a few!” (15)
Late in the day but Hindu society has boldly begun to use movies to comment on social issues that could not be discussed before in Independent India. I hope the patriotic Indian Muslims will also understand why this film is important. (16)

It was painful when my friend @ShobhaSwamy6 revealed to me some years ago that both her daughters got brainwashed in college by Hinduphobic organizations like Equality Labs. I felt helpless & didn't know what to advise. I would have been shattered if I was in her position. (1)
But I watched with admiration as Shobha devoted herself to increasing awareness about the menace of wokeism lurking in college corridors. While others would have hidden family matters, Shobha openly talked about the conflicts with her children & alerted all of us. (2)
Thanks to her, I was more vigilant with my daughter. Shobha also challenged the Hindu thought leaders to come out with reading materials that could be used to counter false narratives about caste & Hinduism being peddled in colleges. (3)

If someone had told me an year ago that the IKS programme of the Govt of India would attract students from around India to present papers and posters, I'd have been sceptical. Too early to expect a good response I'd have thought. (1)
That is why it was such an eye-opener for me to view the posters and listen to presentations made by students in the 19-25 age group at the National Youth Conference held in Kerala recently. The diverse topics chosen by the children were truly amazing. (2)
If one student spoke about game theory from the perspective of Arthashastra, another one spoke about governance from the perspective of Thirukural. One girl took up Paaka Shastra and extracted from it the attributes needed in a good chef which were relevant even today. (3)

Recipe - Take a kg of tomatoes and puree them in a blender. Heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds (rai) and after they stop crackling, quickly add a mixture of freshly powdered hing, chilli powder, roasted methi powder and immediately follow it with tomatoes. (1)
This is a critical step because chilli powder gets burned very quickly. Boil, boil, boil until quantity reduces. Add swaadanusar namak (my favorite expression). (2)
So yeah all those North Indians thinking that this contains pyaaz and lasun, sorry you need to transcend that kind of thinking 😂. Remember a lot depends on the hing you use. Make sure it is the crystal one which is freshly powdered. (3)

3 years ago, I met this man who had fled from Pakistan after a targeted campaign was unleashed on Hindus as revenge against the Babri Masjid demolition in 1992-1993. His shop was set on fire. With his wife and children, he managed to reach Jodhpur and stayed with an uncle. (1) ImageImage
Keeping his pride aside, he decided to sell sundry things from a reda (mobile cart). It was a hard life especially as he wasn’t from a poor family in Pakistan. Eventually he saved enough money to rent shop space. Today, he has 3 shops and is an Indian citizen. (2)
From selling 200 Rs worth of goods in his reda he went to 50,000 Rs. “My advice for new refugees from Pakistan is they must work hard at any job and keep at it. My friends who were ready to stick on have done well; those who gave up & went back to Pakistan are regretting." (3)

I had no idea that just an hour from my parents’ home in Bengaluru near Nelamangala, there was a dreamland full of Hindu art treasures with a close link to Amar Chitra Katha, my favorite comic series. So indebted to @Ramyarohini for motivating me to visit Omthara Kala Kuteera (1) ImageImageImage
Until Ramya made me aware, I credited Anant Pai solely for the success of Amar Chitra Katha. Looks like there has been a big omission and you will know that when you visit Omthara. GK Ananthram is the brain behind Amar Chitra Katha. (2) ImageImage
Only after he pestered his boss Mirchandani he got the budget to publish the comic series in Kannada which became a runaway hit. Impressed, the publishers (India Book House) decided to publish ACK in English & other languages. (3)

On the last day of the Samskara Foundation camp held in Atlanta, Georgia, I had a heart-to-heart talk with the boys while the girls were practicing for a cultural presentation. There was one boy in the camp who asked a lot of questions in every class. (1)
It turned out that this boy was having a hard time in middle school. One of the disturbing things that emerged from my conversation was that the boy was often being subjected to anti-Hindu comments and jokes. He said he was called "Curry cruncher" and such things. (2)
Because he fought back, he was subjected to even more ridicule. I was shocked to learn that his vegetarian diet was being mocked and sometimes the boys would throw salami or beef on his plate at lunchtime so that he would be forced to throw out all the food on his plate. (3)
