The Ohio County Solid Waste Authority held its 2nd annual Earth Day block party on April 22 at @WhgHeritage Artisan Center. More than two dozen vendors greeted hundreds of Wheeling residents to celebrate the occasion. Let's meet some of them! #folkreporters

I spoke with OCSWA's Executive Director, Rebecca Friend, who said “I want people to know there’s hope, and there’s other people fighting to make our home better." Their booth diverted plants from the landfill, repotted them, and gave them to the community. #folkreporters

Students from @westlibertyu Zoo Science taught the community about ball pythons and hissing cockroaches from Africa, as well as aquatic insects from local streams. "These are not pets-they're ambassadors," one student told me. #folkreporters

Colleen Cominsky of Colleen's Crafty Creations started her business selling homegrown loofahs. She now uses foraged and gardened plants to make soaps, natural deodorants, and lip balms. She encouraged people to support @ovfarmersmarket Saturday 9-12 starting in June.
4/10
Volunteer Wheeling, a project of @WhgHeritage, encouraged people to volunteer around the city. The group is known for their weekly litter cleanups. Founder Gano said “things aren’t always as pretty as we’d hope, but there are things we can do to change that.” #folkreporters
5/10
Councilor @RosemaryKetchum said she was there to "meet people where they are." "Democracy doesn’t just happen twice a month," Councilor Ketchum said of City Council meetings, "it happens every day." She believes it's important to be present in the community. #folkreporters

HoH Share, Inc, offered guests art demonstrations, interactive toys, a chess clinic, and issues from @msmpaperwv. Kate Marshall told me about UPLIFTWV.org, which helps pay for IDs and birth certificate copies for those in need. hohshare.org

Dr Darrin Cox of the @northwvmp told me the @mountainpartywv is the “only party in West Virginia that has historically cared about the environment." Cox said “the people here are picking up what we’re putting down,” when asked about the public's reception. #folkreporters

The Ohio County Virtual Lions Club started in 2020 due to the pandemic. Since then they have worked to divert 21,000lbs of plastic trash from landfills, turning them into 42 benches that now sit across Wheeling. They also run the Warwood Farmers Market. #folkreporters

@threadreaderapp unroll! Also @FolkReporters you are the real ones always. Wouldn't be doing this without seeing your guide in January and being like "okay, you know what, I CAN do this."

Guess who has two thumbs and just finished their write up of the Earth Day block party from three weeks ago???
Now I can write my FidoFest article and my article about the opening of timeless muses in a TIMELY manner and be happy. You may not know what I’m talking about but soon enough you will! Next article dropping at 10:00 Sunday. GO SUBSCRIBE TO MY s*bst*ck link in bio
Yes s*bst*ck is being nerfed harder than slurs and hate speech. Yes this is the “free speech” turd Elon promised us. Hope we’re all happy. I have to do double the work to get my content out to the people (IE summarizing in threads). NOT EASY but I love it 💛
The @MenOfChange304 are well known for their community bike rides. The group promotes health and well-being initiatives while offering fellowship between neighbors in the city. They have held blood drives, back-to-school giveaways, and Halloween events! #folkreporters

.@RonScottJr304 told me that one of the goals of @MenOfChange304 is to be present for the community. “We have an inherent interest in the Black community but we are not pigeon-holed. We are a part of the community regardless of what color they are.” #folkreporters
Just want folks who are sharing the Intelligencer’s story with Councilor Seidler’s comment to know the actual story is 90% Dittmar’s rant verbatim.
You aren’t the ones affected by the dissemination of her hate and bigotry, but my friends are! Hope the likes are worth it!
Yes I’m gonna hype myself up. HERE is how you report on known bigots. You don’t copy them word-for-word, conspiracy and nastiness and all. You state what they are mad about and move on. This person is known universally in Wheeling. Now her message is being spread statewide
Again, legally I can’t say Dittmar led the effort to send threats to drag queens and staff of Primantis in March. I can say I believe it to be true. She bragged about doing as much in since deleted posts.
Stop spreading her message with that article. Be responsible.
The Wheeling City Council held its first meeting of May on Tuesday, May 2. It has received statewide attention after a known bigot had their six-minute tirade turned into a full-length story by a legacy paper.
A potential $500,000 loan-financing program to assist in the repair of sidewalks was discussed, offered by @ViceMayorWhg Thalman, Ward 1. Currently, it is the property owner's responsibility to maintain sidewalks. Councilors Sklavounakis and Palmer spoke in opposition.
(2/15)
@MayorWheeling said "We see people pushing baby strollers in the middle of the street...doing nothing is not constructive." City Manager Herron, citing a study for Wheeling Island, Woodsdale, and Warwood, said 231,000 sq ft of sidewalks need repaired, nearly $7 million.

Wheeling's only official skyscraper, the Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Building, has seen estimated restoration costs rise from $21 million to $48 million, to which the audience gasped. @MayorWheeling and members of Council traveled to Canton, OH, to meet with developers

Municipal Tree Board Chairwoman Karen Cox spoke about the 1,150 trees on City property, 300 new trees planted in the last three years, and the April 22 Earth Day block party at Heritage Port. The Tree Board was codified to the City Charter, 6-0. #folkreporters
MAJOR UPDATE: @DEPWV Chief Communications Officer confirms one storage tank was found during @WVDOT@CityofWheeling Streetscape Project. @MillerEnvGroup has been contracted by Triton Construction to perform testing on water and sand found in tank. An odor of diesel was detected.
.@DEPWV says no immediate threat is posed to the Ohio River, but no test results have been submitted. Work on removal was completed on April 17. Comment from @CityofWheeling has not been received, but the Public Relations Specialist confirmed she is working on it w/ City Manager
This is an exclusive, breaking story and will be updated further in the future. No other media outlet is reporting on this. You can support my independent work by becoming a subscriber, or by sharing my article (quoted in the first tweet). #folkreportersopen.substack.com/pub/thehudsone…
