Right. #Eurovision2023 Round 1 is tomorrow. Lets talk about it.

Acts I love in Round 1:
Finland 🇫🇮- Käärijä "Cha Cha Cha"
Sweden 🇸🇪- Loreen "Tattoo"
Malta 🇲🇹- The Busker "Dance"
Croatia🇭🇷- Let 3 "Mama ŠČ!"
First off, there's #Käärijä. I love this act so much. Its fun, the performance is entertaining, the song is easy and catchy, & it has a lot of memorable bits. Honestly, its not the high art Loreen is bringing, but its what Eurovision is all about. I hope he wins the whole thing.
#Loreen is the queen, and she's almost certainly going to walk away with the whole thing when everything is said and done. Her performance is beautiful and her voice is so incredibly strong. I don't totally love the song, but you can't say she doesn't sell it.

Incredible.
Going off in a totally different direction entirely is the #Busker; asking the question "is there such a thing as too much saxophone in a 3 minute pop song?" If the answer is "no", they will do very, very well indeed.

Incidentally, this is my two year old son's favorite song.
And finally, there's #Let3, with a homoerotic version of pop music that feels something like a rock opera version of "Springtime for Hitler" from "The Producers."
All you need to know is that it's a thinly veiled dis-track aimed at Vladimir Putin, and that these guys are awesome.
Ok, that covers the top end. What about the other end?

Acts I hate in Round 1-
Israel🇮🇱- Noa Kirel "Unicorn"
Netherlands🇳🇱- Nicolai and Cooper "Burning Daylight"
Ireland🇮🇪- Wild Youth "We Are One"
What can you say about "Unicorn"? My daughter liked the song when she first heard it.

She's five. And even she was bored of it by the end.

No offense to Noa, but she's leaning way too far into her looks and trying to carry a very mediocre power ballad with it. Hard pass.
Netherlands is usually one of the countries I really like in Eurovision. This year's performance, however, feels a lot of like a low energy 1990's tribute band performing a breakup song. Mia is a good singer. Dion is talented. It just... doesn't work and is too forgettable.
My hot take in Round 1 is Ireland. Wild Youth put together a song that a lot of people (including my wife) like. It sounds empowering. But its just empty fluff with stale, cliché, focus-grouped lyrics in my book. Like a One Direction B-track written by ChatGPT. I hate it.
My humble opinion is that Norway, Czechia, Serbia, Portugal, Switzerland, and Moldova will also advance, while Latvia and Azerbaijan will be eliminated.

What do you think?

Just for fun I'm going to live tweet the Declaration of Independence, and opine as to whether the Supreme Court would have granted immunity for each of the 27 colonial grievances listed against King George III.

A 🧵: Image
1- "He has refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good."

Verdict: Core Function. Exercise of authority as sovereign. Absolute Immunity.
2- "He has forbidden his Governors to pass Laws of immediate and pressing importance, unless suspended in their operation till his Assent should be obtained; and when so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend to them."

Verdict: Core Function. Absolute Immunity.

Worth pointing out, most of the 🇵🇱 farmers organizing these protests are not small, supposedly impoverished farmers struggling to make ends meet as portrayed, but large magnates. The farmer who organized this protest, for instance, owns 1500 acres of land.
echodnia.eu/podkarpackie/w…
Smallholding farmers, to be sure, are feeling a squeeze due to cheap grain imports from Russia/Ukraine. But this protest is clearly the result of manipulation by the Polish far-right, and is being cynically exploited by Russian disinformation sources and wealthier Polish farmers.

The @LPNational is suing 8 libertarian activists from Michigan for alleged trademark infringement. But the real intent is clear; this is the national party injecting itself into a state party dispute. It's reprehensible. And every member of the LNC should be ashamed of themselves

Michigan is currently considering a series of bills to regulate firearm ownership in the aftermath of the shooting on the campus of Michigan State University. These bills are widely expected to pass in the coming days. Whether they are sound policy, however, is less certain.
The first bill, HB 4138/4142/4143 represents a universal licensing and registration scheme. The primary intent of these bills is to expand the licensing scheme currently employed for pistols to all firearms.

A summary of the bill is available here:

The second bill, HB 4139/4140/4141/4144 would require all firearms being "stored or left unattended" to be unloaded and locked "if it is reasonably known that the firearm may be accessible to a minor."

A summary of the bill is available here:

This is the Michigan Libertarian Party's way of telling the LNC to kindly piss the hell off.

History is being misused and absued to justify and suborn Russia's brutal, unjust war in Ukraine. A long 🧵 about how social media personalities like @mtracey are abusing the historical record to justify their terrible positions in this war.
One of my capstone courses for my History BA at @GVSU was titled "Use and Abuse of History". In it, we learned about ways in which history can be misused or taken away from valuable context, & how common this is, especially outside of serious historical/academic circles.
Common methods included overly simplistic presentations of events, distortion/misrepresentation of primary source documents, appealing to/relying on primary authorities uncritically, artificially creating narratives through ignorance of contrary facts, and other techniques.
