After all the dissecting and despairing in the pub yesterday, it’s clear that something needs to change from within the fanbase.
We have to stop splitting off and arguing against each other or action/change will never happen, as seen yesterday.
Here’s a thread/my thoughts:
#wafc
1. The fanbase must become a unified and organised collective.
By having 4 or 5 different fan groups, the fanbase divides itself. We are already small in numbers. By uniting under one organised, transparent and fan-elected leadership, we create strength in numbers and accountability in each other and in the group.
2.This collective must be run as an officially democratic, elected and transparent organisation.
This fan group must be officially recognised and organised by us all. All fans must have equal opportunity to express their interest to lead, or be allowed to offer their expertise, in the form of electing members to the ‘fan’s group board’ each season.
3.All fans must have equal access to the group and have equal influence in the direction of the group and decisions it makes.
All supporters of the club should be invited to join the collective. Any fan should be allowed the opportunity to stand for election, propose a vote, or similar actions. The group should be democratic, with all votes being of equal weighting and act on the wishes of the majority.
4.All fans must have equal access to information and to knowledge.
All information shared with any member of the group should be validated and shared with all. Any off record information is worthless to the majority of fans and only allows rumours and fear to grow. Transparency should be paramount. Meetings should be recorded and records shared.
5.Fans have to understand and accept that their actions may have no influence over the decision makers within the club. They can only present the collective opinion of the fanbase.
The only people that can 100% effectively influence decisions at board-room level are those with a financial stake within the club. The fan group must therefore understand and accept that they can only attempt to influence decision through voicing their collective opinion.
6.Fans have to accept that in order to affect change, they have to risk upsetting those in charge of the club.
Whilst the group would aim for a positive relationship with the club, it must be prepared to attempt to influence change through disruptive/collective protest. If the group believes the actions of the owners are damaging the club’s future, it must act without fear of consequence.
7.Fans must collectively voice their opinions through the processes of the group and must organise action if democratically voted for.
The group must allow fans to vote on any action to be taken in an effort to influence the direction of the club, including any protest action. The fans must then wholeheartedly and collectively take this action if the group democratically votes for this.
8.The group must prioritise the running of the club at a sustainable level, regardless of its position in the football pyramid.
Fans must accept that the club’s league position may fluctuate or suffer as a result but the priority should always be attempting to ensure the sustainability of the club, with a break-even model preferred.
9.There must always be a contingency plan for if the worst ever happens.
The last few years have shown that the worst can happen at any time. The group must have a contingency plan should the club return into admin or, at worst, have a plan to rebuild should the club fold, even if the club is operating healthily.
10.Fans must be prepared for the worst to happen and for the contingency plan to be put into action at any moment.
The contingency plan must be realistically actionable and regularly monitored and updated. The group must be able to begin to put the contingency plan into action should the situation demand it.
That’s my lot on the situation.
Please forgive my shouting into the void but I, like many, feel helpless at our current situation.
We’ve seen what it’s like to go to the brink and back. The only way we can influence anything is by uniting.
Would appreciate folk’s thoughts.
