We've seen how Trump addresses sexual assault. He calls women liars & claims the allegations are politically-motivated. He encouraged a whole crowd to mock Christine Blasey Ford's memory. I don't know why we act as if we don't have ample evidence of what he's likely to do. Image
It should be a seismic event. It will not be, for many reasons, one of which is that the media is less interested in the details of the rape allegation/civil trial than they are in the ~tantalizing~ viciousness with which Trump will respond to the verdict. Image
We cared about Trump's alleged assaults in Oct, 2016. Then we forgot.
We cared during the advent of "MeToo" in Nov, 2017. We forgot.
We cared during the Kavanaugh hearings in Oct, 2018. We forgot.
We cared during election time in Oct, 2020.
Then we forgot again. Image
Here are better Q's than "what will Trump say?"
1. Why does this story carry so little impact & is the media partially responsible?
2. What does this say about what Trump has done? The scope of his malevolence?
3. What does this say about how much we care about sexual assault?
1. Those of us convinced by evidence provided by 20+ alleged victims, as well as Trump's own words, long ago reached the same conclusion as the civil jury. We are also numb after his malevolence re: COVID & democracy.

Interpersonal violence gets diminished against this scale. . Image
1 (cont. . .): Those who adore Trump have been radicalized against doctors, scientists, educators, & even flight attendants. Science. History. There is no truth there. They always believed the women were liars & I fail to see how a civil verdict moves this needle. Image
1 (cont. . .): Yes, the media is partially--tho not fully--responsible for our response. The media has the power to craft narratives. Yet they often choose to locate drama elsewhere

To illustrate: Here is a rough google trend chart of 2023: "Trump sexual assault" vs. "Biden age" Image
2. During Trump, we were bombarded with not only scandals--but scandals involving real--often systemic--harm to multiple *groups* of people, not just individuals. White supremacy. Tortured children. Lies about disease while thousands died. Fomenting violence against protesters. Image
2 (cont. . .) Anyone who has ever studied psychology, neuroscience, or trauma/stress would be able to conclude that such a constant onslaught of violence & horror would create an overall "dampening" effect on one's neurological, physiological, & psychological responses.
Now, to answer #3. The most painful question. There are too many confounding variables. If COVID or the insurrection hadn't happened, would we care more? I can't say.

But I will posit a guess: we do not care enough. For example: "woke" mapped over "sexual assault" in 2023: Image
Finally, I will say that one outlet's coverage of the civil trial against Trump has been exemplary: @NewsHour. They devoted several segments to covering the trial as a top news story. They have also interviewed experts on aspects of psychology + rape, including victim-blaming.

There is a great deal of anti-trans bigotry. There are the hardcore bigots. There is also softer bigotry/ignorance, the type that proliferates in Op-Eds. The GOP is making a big miscalculation in believing those w/ softer bigotry will be motivated by anti-trans rhetoric
To be clear, I'm making an observation, not a normative statement. I'm not making excuses for "soft bigotry." I actually believe the "soft bigotry"--which has exploded in the mainstream since 2020--may have lit the match under the hardcore villains. Perhaps they saw an opening.
As @DrewSav said, a lot of American voters really are of the "mind your own business" category. Will they read 100 articles on the dangers of "wokeness" and grumble about "they/them?" Yes. Will they then look over at the dumpster fire of the GOP & think, "That's my ticket!" No.

In 1999, my brother was arrested in the WTO protest. A year later, when I was 16, I worked for Nader*. A year later, I moved to my brother's anarchist commune to protest the war. 2 years later, I marched in Paris, w/ a sign saying, to GWB, "You make me ashamed to be American."
I sincerely apologize and have learned from this terrible error. Image
Blink 182 was my first concert, however. After discovering them, I got into harder punk rock, which can be quite political! I did not watch Jackass, but, if I remember correctly, my brother enjoyed the show when he wasn't eating out of dumpsters & trying to burn down capitalism Image

There seems to be a trend in the media where Republicans are frequently "fighters" & the bigotry & ignorance they express is a little picante. Anti-establishment. Against the grain. Even ~Fascinating~.

If only those who were pro-equality could ever be described as equally spicy.
In the few cases where a Democratic politician is a feisty fighter, it's usually because they've caused or are perceived to have caused intra-Democratic tension. Democrats have a special spice when they take each other on; not when they're in agreement over basic human rights
How we describe people has an impact on how we perceive their beliefs. I personally think we should use maximally neutral language. That said, given such rich personal descriptions persist, we should note they are unequally applied to those for vs. those against human rights.

In this rural Pennsylvania bar….
Brandon is my friend; in case that isn’t obvious! He’s been taking good care of me since I moved to rural PA
There was a question about his anarchist tattoo. It’s just an anarchist tattoo. A friend gave it to him when he was 16. Since then, he’s chased proud boys outta town

It requires extraordinary mental gymnastics to disregard the totality of the midterm results & focus on an outlier outcome from an infamously idiosyncratic state. "Throw out all the data from MI/WI/PA/AZ/GA. The logical path is to extrapolate national trends from Florida." What?
DeSantis's "culture war" is not even that popular in Florida, despite what the author of the NYTimes' piece claims. Majorities of FL voters oppose "Parental Rights in Education" and 51% oppose the "Stop Woke Act." These laws even have relatively weak support from Republicans! Image
What possible rationale underlies throwing away all the data indicating GOP "culture wars" are hurting them--including what was just an absolute bloodbath in PA--& coming to the conclusion that Democrats should learn from DeSantis, whose culture warrior policies are not popular?

Don't sell Elon short. In this Year of Our Lord 2023, he has managed to do what many deemed impossible: render social media much, much less addictive.
Twitter, like much social media, works on gratification & adrenaline interwoven w/ ~group dynamics~. We want to see things that interest us. We also want to see things that interest our friends. We want to see things that anger us. And we want to see things that anger our friends
Such platforms can have good outcomes and bad outcomes. One enormous ~good outcome~ is solidarity among members marginalized groups. One enormous bad outcome is funneling people towards ever-escalating bigotry & conspiracy alternet.org/2021/10/facebo…
