THREAD. Now I can share this. Posting this photo for the first time from May 9, 2022. This was at the PH consulate in Houston as election counsel for the Liberal Party and @lenirobredo
If my Facebook looked like a political war zone in 2016, it was totally silent in 2022. Image
The 2016 elections convinced me that there was no more point debating online and elsewhere because I couldn’t find a compromise to be had with the opposite side of the divide.
You engage in debates only if there is a middle ground to be reached. There was none.
Or if persuading the other side is even possible no matter how remote. It wasn’t possible.
2016 revealed to me that our main handicap as a nation was not illiteracy but moral bankruptcy. The common denominator between the rich and the poor is not ignorance, but lack of morals.
The educated who were supposed to lead the uneducated were as morally depraved as the masses. This made healthy political discourse on all levels futile, and national progress difficult. Lines were drawn in 2016. while 2022 turned into a battle for the soul of this nation.
There is no middle ground between violence and non-violence, between decency and indecency. With the war on drugs, either
you were complacent to the killings or you weren’t.
There is no compromise with the type of president you prefer.
Either you want him “bastos” or you prefer the “maginoo”. “Maginoo pero medyo bastos” is a misnomer. It does not exist.
So I closed shop and went to IG to post food pics.📷
For how do you argue with a lawyer who refuses to accept that the drug problem is poverty driven. this is a Filipino who spent years studying the law yet thinks it is sound policy to kill poor people to eradicate crimes that come with a swelling hand to mouth population.
What else is there to say to a doctor who believes that progress and decency are mutually exclusive? That in order to achieve one, you have to give up the other. That disrespect for women is okay in exchange for a more decent society. Oh the irony.
I looked at my fellow Filipinos in the eyes and all I saw was greed and sloth. Too lazy to do the work involved in nation building, they agreed to quick fix measures. To terminate those burdens to society. Tag the poor as drug addicts, and eliminate them, the way Nazis and
its supporters saw “The Final Solution” as the only means to a better Germany.
I looked them in the eyes and all I saw was cowardice. Unwilling to have blood in their hands, they gave blanket authority to a mad man who was willing to do the dirty job of
dumping bodies of Filipinos into the sea to become fish food, all of these promised to be done in 6 months.
Social media accelerated the moral decay a thousandfold and 2022 would be an acid test for the country.
By 2021, the opposition was almost completely obliterated.
It didn’t have any recognizable names except @lenirobredo.
It had to run a political campaign based on decency and hope, and hope she gave to the people.
The last 6 years, changed my views drastically.
I stayed for 2 days in Houston with my family to perform a duty
as Liberal Party’s election counsel. I was already at the PH consulate around 7am CST of May 9th. Before 12NN, I heard the news that BBM already got an insurmountable lead over @lenirobredo rendering the counting we were doing moot.
I finished the counting nevertheless. Better serve the country this way than argue with idiots online.
Alone with my thoughts, I reflected quietly on my way home. Was I sad @lenirobredo lost? No, because she didn’t. It was the country that lost that day.
A good person like @lenirobredo will always find something good to do. She’ll be fine. But what would the nation do with a broken moral compass?
2022 didn’t become a redemption for the nation. Instead, it validated everything that happened in 2016.
It confirmed that we prefer bad leaders. That in the past six years, we have become so morally bankrupt, we were okay replacing a foul mouthed self-confessed murderer with the family who stole billions from the people.
To be honest, I was happy Leni lost the election. She would have been an anomaly like Pnoy in the series of succession of incompetent presidents in our country.
We don’t deserve good leaders because we don’t want good leaders, I mused.
Along the road, I pondered on something brilliant that would explain the elections of 2016 and 2022 and hopefully, this can provide closure to the many supporters of @lenirobredo .
“A morally depraved electorate will never elect a morally upright leader.”
There are no "What if Leni won?" She didn't lose in the first place. Only "What if the country won over the family who robbed her?"
If anything good came out of elections 2022, it was the pink flame of hope the political movement of Leni created and the Filipino youth who
answered the call. It proved that the country still has a soul. Those they call themselves #Kakampinks will be our light, as we endure this moral darkness sweeping the nation.
PS. If you are a troll. Don’t even bother. My comments section is off, I don’t read DMs and neither do I read quotes. If this offended you. Good. The good news is, you don’t get to offend me back. Let’s keep it that way.
