WGA PICKET TIPS (ymmv)

As some of you know, I used to work on film sets as a grip. So long days on my feet used to be the norm. And as I put in 8 miles a day like the rest of you, I was reminded of some of my set "tips".

Maybe you'll find something useful. #WGA #WGAStrong 1/10
EPSOM SALTS

End of day foot care is key. Helps you recover, so you're ready to go again tomorrow. Epsom salts may seem antiquated or for the "olds", but Epsom salts are still here and they're for everybody.

SPIKY FOOT MASSAGE BALL

Also for end of day foot care, get you a spiky foot massage ball. They generally come in two sizes: one about the size of a large orange, the other about the size of a kiwi. I prefer the smaller one. 3/10 Image
MASSAGE STICKS

A massage stick is tough to use on your feet unless you're particularly bendy. But they're great for your quads and calves. You can use them to loosen up before a shift or afterwards to rub sore muscles. 4/10 Image
FOAM ROLLERS

Also good for before or after a shift. Great for your back, legs, and hips. Plenty of YouTube videos to walk you through a routine. I really like this one. 5/10

CHANGE YOUR SOCKS

While picketing, a fresh pair of socks is a game changer. Maybe at hour two or three, your feet begin to protest. So, stop, take your shoes off, give your feet a quick massage, then put on a new pair of socks. It will give you a little boost to keep going. 6/10
GARDENING HAT

As the strike moves deeper into the summer, it's only going to get hotter. Get a wide brim hat. I love the ones you can pick up at a hardware store. You may be wearing sunscreen, but not on your scalp. And it will help to keep some of the heat off of you. 7/10 Image
DITCH THE BACKPACK

You want to be walking as light as possible and extra weight on your back is also extra weight on your knees. A backpack can also make the muscles between your shoulders and neck (trapezius) sore. So leave your extra stuff in your car if you can. 8/10
HYDRATE (duh)

Not too much of an issue now, but as it gets hotter, you'll need to drink more for general stamina as well as to not pass out in a sweaty puddle of heat exhaustion. Plus eight 8 ounces a day or whatever. 9/10
HAVE FUN

None of us wants to be striking, but here we are. So why not make the best of it?

Make random friends. Tell that showrunner you love their show. Say hi to your socials that you never met IRL. Encourage cars to honk. Dance. Chant. Burn the motherfucker down. ✊🏼🪧 10/10
