#BeyondGrowth2023
Lebohang Liepollo Pheko on GDP:
"The 'world' that's constructed is a world that was invented by the exploitation and the plunder by the Minority World on the Majority World."
This continues today even as part of the Green Agenda
Ritu Verma: "GDP is a Colonial construct and only has a + Button"; "GDP per capita is what divides countries"
"You cannot use income to measure welfare" according to Kuznets the originator of the concept of GDP in 1934 #ethicaleconomics beyond-growth-2023.eu/lecture/focus-…
It's long overdue that #hyprocity was called out. Thank you @Liepollo9 for doing so today.
#BeyondGrowth2023 Closing Plenary 1/5 "A young woman asked me, what does a post-growth economy have to offer to a generation fearful for their future?"
"Characterising prosperity, as the relentless accumulation of wealth is nothing more than a denial of our humanity,
2/5 a denial of the interdependent web of life on planet Earth. Or denial of death."
"The foundation for all our prosperity, the foundation for all our wealth....And something quite surprising follows from this to deliver prosperity as health, we need an economy whose guiding
3/5 principle is care."
"But systematically capitalism externalise the burden of care in much the same way that it externalised nature....By counting the wrong things, by valuing the wrong things, by focusing on narrow deficit, definitions of productivity that privilege profits
#BeyondGrowth2023 FP14 1/4 We need to think cradle to cradle....otherwise:
"When you make the wrong things perfectly then they are perfectly wrong"
"It starts with the wrong understanding of sustainability to me its the needs of the present generation without
2/4 compromising the needs of future ones.....think about when you come home to your child, ....don't you want to be good for your child? Europe wants to be climate neutral, think about coming home to your child and telling them you are child neutral today....don't you want to
3/4 be good for your child? You can only be climate neutral if you don't exist....did you ever see a tree being climate neutral? A tree is good for the climate so do we want to be more stupid than a tree?"

#BeyondGrowth2023 Plenary 3 1/4 1st pillar sufficiency - policy measures and daily practices, the order in which these two concepts appear is very important, policies trigger daily practices.
2nd pillar of sufficiency - these policies aim at avoiding upfront use of all natural
2/4 resources, so sufficiency is not only about energy, but it is also about materials, land use, water use, etc.
3rd pillar of sufficiency - these policies should aim at delivering wellbeing for all in the original definition.
Fit for 55 did not deliver on our climate,
3/4 is unlikely to deliver on the energy justice that we all ought to just transition that we all talk about.
4th pillar of sufficiency - considering planetary boundaries why today our policies are climate neutrality targets: we do not consider our cumulative emissions
