In today's #dailysoup, I'll introduce a Filipino political analyst, think-tank director, and Pandesal Forum resource person, Bobby Tuazon.

He's known for writing for Chinese state-owned media, as well as his pro-China and pro-Russia peepotalking points.

1/21 Image
Tuazon is currently the director of a Filipino public policy and research think-tank named the "Center for People Empowerment in Governance" or CenPEG.

2/21 Image
As a former head of a pol-sci committee at the University of the Philippines, the most prestigious uni in my country, Tuazon possessed substantial academic credentials, with 300+ scholarly works written for 25 years.

However, from the inside, it is a different story.

3/21 Image
Tuazon serves as an opinion columnist for a CCP-owned media outlet, CGTN. He also appeared at Global Times, the "Fox News of China".

For more info about Global Times, you may refer to this #vatniksoup entry from @P_Kallioniemi:

Image
Tuazon is also a resource person in the Pandesal Forum, a series of forums at the Kamuning Bakery Cafe known for being a hangout place for blatant Filipino vatniks x pro-China peepotalkers, including Anna Malindog-Uy and Sass Rogando Sasot.

5/21 Image
Despite substantial academic credentials, Tuazon ended up spewing pro-China and pro-Russia peepotalking points in his articles and during Pandesal Forum conferences.

6/21 Image
Tuazon's stance has been somewhere along the lines of "the US is unreliable", "the US is collapsing coz it excludes other countries", "the multipolar order under China and Russia is rising, so just deal with it", and "America did bad things, so China is the good guy".

7/21

Image

Image
For example, during a Pandesal Forum conference, Tuazon peepotalked about "US exclusion of countries like Singapore and Thailand from Biden's Summit for Democracy" and "US decline".

He said something along the lines of "the US is doing a Cold War mindset in Asia".

8/21 Image
Two years after the 2012 Scarborough Shoal standoff, Tuazon peepotalked on suggestions in a Global Times article that were something along the lines of "the US should not use EDCA or engage in provocative military acts against China's claims in the SCS/WPS".

9/21 Image
Four months after pro-China Filipino leader Rodrigo Duterte won the presidency, Tuazon expressed concern on Duterte's distancing from US, but however, he said that "Duterte's policy to distance from the US is on the right track coz US credibility is declining".

10/21 Image
Tuazon did a cocktail of pro-China and pro-Russia peepotalking remarks when he said that "US military power will be irrelevant by a..."parallel order" of China, Russia, and other emerging powers".

Moreover, Tuazon called Duterte's "pivot to China" as a "balancing act",...

11/21 Image
...and suggested "negotiations with China to use SCS resources with Chinese and Russian technology". Meanwhile, Tuazon praised the BRI as a "sign of winning Chinese economic diplomacy".

In reality, both the BRI and Duterte's "pivot to China" led to bad endings.

12/21 Image
In a CGTN article, Tuazon called the US' FONOPS in the SCS as "provocative", adding that the "US is militarily encircling China".

Tuazon also blamed the US for "formenting tensions in Taiwan", calling the US as "duplicitous" and a "violator of the One-China Policy".

13/21 Image
While Pelosi was visiting Taiwan in August 2022, Tuazon, during a Pandesal Forum conference, reiterated the "US-is-provoking-Taiwan" peepotalking remark, accusing the US for "driving independence movements in Hong Kong, Xinjiang, and Tibet".

14/21 Image
In reality, China is the aggressor provoking Taiwan while the US and its allies are just defending the stability of the Indo-Pacific from Chinese aggression.

Moreover, the adverse political and economic conditions in China are the ones driving the independence movements.

15/21 Image
In 2021 while there were debates on Duterte's decision to scrap the VFA, Tuazon, despite the article's title "VFA is for keeps", suggested "PH-China cooperation projects to solve the SCS dispute", while saying that the VFA has "an onerous character".

16/21
Image
Image
One day before Russia invaded Ukraine in 02/24, Tuazon wrote the article "The Russians are Coming!", which was filled with "NATO expansion" and anti-West peepotalking.

Then, he claimed that "Putin sent troops to eastern Ukraine to defend the area from Ukrainian forces".

17/21
Image
Image
Few weeks after Russia invaded Ukraine in 02/24, Tuazon wrote the article "A quest for peace in Europe", which was filled with blatant pro-Russia peepotalking remarks.

For example, Tuazon claimed that "The historical roots...show that Russia was provoked by the US and...

18/21 Image
...its NATO allies...", with Tuazon adding that "The armed option was the only way...", indicating that he believed in something along the lines of "Russia was just defending itself from NATO expansion".

I saw some more "NATO expansion" peepotalking in Tuazon's article.

19/21 Image
Tuazon blurted an infamous pro-Russia peepotalking remark when he said "the 2014 Maidan Revolution was a US-led coup from Victoria Nuland".

He claimed that "the war in the Donbass was launched by Ukraine against ethnic Russians" and "Ukraine violated the Minsk Agreement".

20/21 Image
Then, the EU's Ambassador to the Philippines, Luc Veron, wrote an article successfully debunking Tuazon's pro-Russia peepotalking remarks.

In today's #dailysoup, let's go back to the SCS dispute as I'll introduce a disputed oil-abundant reef complex, the Luconia Shoal.

It is known for being a hotspot of maritime disputes between Malaysia, China, and Vietnam.

1/20 Image
Malaysia's maritime EEZ, just located beside the western shores of Sarawak and Sabah, is overlapped by the EEZs of the Philippines, Brunei, Vietnam, and China.

This houses precious oil fields, as well as the Luconia and the James Shoals.

2/20 Image
The Luconia Shoal is located near the Kasawari Gas Field, which was discovered in November 2011. It appears to contain three trillion cubic feet of gas resrouces, now being operated by Malaysian oil company, Petronas.

In today's #dailysoup, I'll introduce a Singaporean geopolitics x defence blog, Defense Politics Asia and its managing editor, Wyatt Mingji Lim.

They are known for excelling in mental gymnastics and anti-West x pro-Russia peepotalking.

Defense Politics Asia, based in Singapore, is founded by Wyatt Mingji Lim and an unspecified "partner" in 2017. He is serving as its "managing editor" since then.

Before I discuss about Defense Politics Asia, let's briefly tackle Wyatt's background.

2/27 Image
During much of the 2000s, Wyatt served in the Singaporean Armed Forces, with his last military rank being a "First Sergeant".

Hence, he said in an interview that he is "just interested in geopolitics and military stuff".

In today's #dailysoup, I'll introduce Indonesian journalist and academic, Smith Alhadar.

He's best known for being a so-called "expert academic" spreading anti-West and pro-Russia peepotalking remarks.

1/19 Image
Alhadar serves as a journalist x professional at an NGO named "Indonesian Society for Middle East Studies".

Moreover, the profiles of Alhadar claim that he is also an executive director of a think-tank called "Institute of Democracy and Education Indonesia".

Despite claims in Alhadar's profiles pointing to his position as "executive director of IDE Indonesia", I didn't see his name in the list of executive board members in IDE Indonesia's website.
