Midjourney Face Tutorial

1/17 As you may have seen I posted a fair amount of AI generated faces recently, where I use different kinds of material. I’ve been asked quite some times about how to create these. So, let’s have a look! 👇🧵 Image
2/17 After trying many different prompts, it became a lot easier in MJ 5.1. I now use a prompt setup that looks like this:
Prompt setup: [material] visualizing a [emotion] human face, [randomness], [color palette], [shot type], [eyes], [lighting], [regular MJ parameters]
3/17 The basics.
Let’s start with the basics, and fill in the material part. I’m using an elementary material used to generate noise: static. It results in a rather dull output. Let’s spice that up a little.

4/17 The material.
So let’s spice it up with replacing ‘static’ with something more dramatic. Practically anything can be used, but flat material like paper, tin foil, leaves etc or liquids often leads to more satisfying results. Of course, you can make up your own material. origami paper visualizing a...yeast visualizing a human face
5/17. Adding an emotion or expression (optional).
This is somewhat tricky in MJ 5.1. Mind that positive emotions like ‘happy’ or ‘friendly’ often turn out quite scary. Seems MJ is struggling with it. See the alt descriptions for the emotions and expressions I applied. origami paper visualizing a...origami paper visualizing a...origami paper visualizing a...origami paper visualizing a...
6/17 Adding extra randomness (optional).
With the standard MJ chaos parameter you can add chaos from 1 - 100. That is a certain type of chaos defined by MJ. I like to use my own chaos, and you can practically use any phrase that breathes ‘randomness’:
7/17. a distorted tv signal, vaporized gamma rays and erroneous matrix, etc. I happen to go with ‘distorted malfunction’ quite often. You’ll notice the 4 outcomes will be more consistent when steered with the same randomness.
8/17 Color palette (optional).
These are many existing and non-existing color palettes out there. Ask Chat GPT for common palettes like: complementary, triadic etc. Or more specific ones like ‘camouflage’, ‘pastel’ and ‘earth tones’.
9/17 Or use something that relates to colors, but is not an actual color palette, like ’synesthesia’. Here, let’s go for ‘earth tones’! origami paper visualizing a...
10/17 Shot type (optional).
Most common is the editorial style photo, but then MJ quite often crops off the top and bottom when generating a face. MJ usually goes for a front view, but to control the angle more, I usually go for ‘front shot’. You can make up your own of course.
11/17 Eyes (optional).
Most of the time, MJ will generate faces with their eyes closed. Especially when the material more or less covers them. To force open eyes, I just use ‘eyes open’. Not a silver bullet, but definitely increases the chance of a face looking at you.
12/17 Lighting (optional).
Any lighting can do, according to your taste. Try ‘golden hour’, volumetric lighting’ and ‘cinematic lighting’. Please mind that ‘dramatic lighting’ often is put behind the eyes (inside the head) by MJ, so the eyes start to shoot fire.
13/17 Regular MJ parameters (optional).
I think in this case the aspect ratio should be set to any portrait layout, like 2:3 or 9:16, but of course anything is possible. Play around with the other parameters like style, Niji and chaos.
14/17 Bonus
I found out that if you use a specific phrase that represents a 3D object in front of the material you’re using, the face gets more ‘loose’ from the background, and gives it more depth. Any phrase could do, but please mind if you’re using for instance ‘cube’...
15/17 ... the face becomes a cube. So I go with ‘mobius’ (or möbius, or moebius). It seems MJ does recognize the 3D aspect of it, but doesn’t know what to do with it, so it leaves the face in shape. mobius origami paper visual...
16/17 Reroll and remix
It almost never happens that the first 4 outcomes are a perfect fit, although the hit ratio is definitely higher in MJ 5.1. Sharpen the prompt by remixing it, or just play with any of the settings above. And reroll. Did I say reroll? Reroll!
17/17 That’s it! Of course, this is not the only way to do it, but this is how I do it with satisfaction.
Thanks for reading it way until here!
