For those tracking the New Apostolic Reformation (& Charismatic/Apostolic-Prophetic/Fivefold Christianity as a whole), I commend this article by @reb_hopkins (in @reachjulieroys) about abusive leadership at the former Anaheim Vineyard. julieroys.com/exclusive-form… 1/
For those not tracking the ins & outs of this, here's a quick refresher: The Anaheim Vineyard was John Wimber's church & the iconic, flagship Vineyard church during Wimber's career. Some Vineyard folk used to affectionately call it "the mothership" mainandplain.com/wimber-me-how-… 2/
Wimber, a former member of the Righteous Brothers band, was a guiding light in the Charismatic world of the 1970s to 1990s. In Charismatic Revival Fury, I show how he taught w/ C. Peter Wagner at Fuller Seminary, & midwifed Wagner's late-career pivot. podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/cha… 3/
Eventually, Wimber grew disillusioned with Wagner's radical ideas esp. around strategic spiritual warfare but also the whole NAR paradigm, though Wagner did try to falsely claim – shortly after Wimber's death! – that Wimber was an NAR supporter. amazon.com/New-Apostolic-… 4/
Wimber died in 1997, & the Anaheim Vineyard has bumped along since but not been the hub of activity it was under his leadership. Full disclosure: I casually attended the Anaheim Vineyard for a couple years in the 00's but was never a member or insider there. 5/
In 2018, the Anaheim Vineyard asked Alan & Kathryn Scott, a Vineyard-pastor couple from Ireland, to be the new pastors. In April 2022, the Scotts announced that they were taking the church (& its millions in assets) to break away from the Vineyard. religionnews.com/2022/04/27/for… 6/
The Scotts renamed the church Dwelling Place Anaheim. This caused great consternation w/in the Vineyard Association, because of the church's historic importance at the heart of the movement. The Scotts claimed God had prophetically revealed this course. religionnews.com/2022/04/21/the… 7/
A few months after the split, leaders in the former Anaheim Vineyard, including Wimber's widow, sued the Scotts/Dwelling Place for $62 million of fraud, claiming that they had misled the church throughout this process. belfasttelegraph.co.uk/sunday-life/ne… 8/
For those familiar w/ New Apostolic Reformation & Apostolic-Prophetic dynamics, this set off alarm bells. The Scotts appeared to be doing at the Vineyard mothership what's happened to many churches: breaking it off to be independent & then form or join an apostolic network. 9/
Reportedly, major Apostolic-Prophetic leaders (Bill Johnson, Randy Clark, Heidi Baker, etc.) had been frequenting the church before its split from the Vineyard. These are all leaders in Ché Ahn's lateral Revival Alliance network. hollypivec.com/blog/is-vineya… 10/
Jeremy Riddle, the uber-popular Anaheim Vineyard worship leader, who had spent time training at Bill Johnson's Bethel Church (the most prominent apostolic hub in the US), was evidently at the heart of the breakaway controversy. latimes.com/california/sto… 11/
So all the hallmarks were there that this putsch represented the most high-profile NAR/Apostolic-Prophetic annexation, perhaps, in US history. But I held off commenting, b/c it's a complex story, & the Scotts denied this was anything but than an organic process of separation. 12/
What @reb_hopkins' story now reveals is that Alan Scott has been calling himself an apostle, has coercively led staff based on prophetic declarations, & has been accused of spiritual abuse by a dozen former church staff. julieroys.com/exclusive-form… 13/
The story also highlights how Alan Scott & Jeremy Riddle have rigorously sought to instill a "revival culture" & "loyalty culture" (those are glaring Bethel-isms) in the reconstituted church, by imposing their will on subordinate staff. 14/
So, yes, this whole Vineyard Anaheim story *needs* to be understood within the context of the burgeoning global Apostolic-Prophetic Movement (a.k.a., New Apostolic Reformation), it's aggressive takeover of local churches, & the unaccountable leadership model it brings. 15/
The bottom line: This insurgent Apostolic-Prophetic ecclesiology is a force to be reckoned with, particularly in this desperate, post-COVID moment where church leaders are under immense pressure, & even iconic, legendary churches can end up in dangerous NAR-land. 16/

It's an important but thorny question from @KnudstrupJulie as to whether to call Bethel Church in Redding part of the New Apostolic Reformation. The waters have been muddied by the dynamic of critics very broadly applying the label "NAR" hither & yon. Here are my thoughts. 1/
I'll also note that I realize my approach is out of step with many other NAR watchers, so I'm ready for my rhetorical drubbing... First, the term "NAR" (Why do people say "nahr"?) is highly polarizing today, so those who might have self-applied it a decade ago avoid it now. 2/
On the question of Bethel Redding, this is even more complicated by the popular but disjointed labeling done by Pivec & Geivett that attempts to put Bethel at the heart of the NAR, so that Bethel's ideas/practices become definitional to the NAR. 3/

These comments from Roger Stone at the Pastors for Trump/ReAwaken event at Trump's Doral resort this week are very important. For those who don't speak "Independent Charismatic," allow me to translate. Stone is claiming a prophetic destiny based on a prophecy from Kim Clement. 1/
Kim Clement passed away in 2016 (here's a tribute from the Christian music artist Carman facebook.com/CarmanLicciard…), but before that, he was the *original* Trump prophet. He was a South African Charismatic prophet, with a real dramatic flair - synth music, rambling, etc. 2/
Clement was part of Cindy Jacobs' Apostolic Council of Prophetic Elders, a core New Apostolic Reformation institution that C. Peter Wagner superintended. elijahlist.com/words/display_… He rubbed shoulders with & was close to Lance Wallnau, Dutch Sheets, Lou Engle – the whole crowd. 3/

I was happy to be interviewed, & I think @7im did a very fair job of writing about the complex case of Derrick Peterson, a former sheriff deputy & candidate for Portland's school board who was commissioned as an apostle by Ché Ahn in 2020.
rollingstone.com/politics/polit… 1/
Ché Ahn also listed Peterson as an advisory board member at 1Race4Life, an anti-abortion/racial-reconciliation org that he founded in 2020 after George Floyd's murder. web.archive.org/web/2021120511…. 2/
Last week Oregon Live ran a story where Peterson downplayed his 2020 apostolic commissioning & said he "is not affiliated" with 1Race4Life. oregonlive.com/education/2023…. Since then he was removed from Ahn's site & the 1Race4Life site has gone dark. What is going on here? 3/

Those who follow intellectual/coalitional developments on the Religious Right should pay close attn to this strange essay by feminist Naomi Wolf brownstone.org/articles/have-… in which she endorses the worldview & teaching of Messianic rabbi/pastor Jonathan Cahn. Let me explain... 1/
If Jonathan Cahn isn’t on your radar, he should be. He is a leading “thinker” in the Independent Charismatic space, writing bestseller books interpolating Hebrew Bible narratives & prophecy into elaborate readings of contemporary American politics bethisraelworshipcenter.org/about%20Us/Abo…. 2/
In 2015, Charisma Magazine named Cahn one of the “40 Christian Leaders Who Radically Changed Our World.” charismanews.com/40-year-annive… Other named luminaries included Cindy Jacobs, Bill Hamon, (both key #NewApostolicReformation leaders), Pat Robertson, & Billy Graham. 3/

This piece (in @ConversationEDU) asks whether churches like #Hillsong are unexpectedly shrinking in Australia. It suggests this based on a 2021 census that found “Pentecostal” identfication declined slightly (2%) from 2016 to 2021. I have questions... 1/ theconversation.com/were-told-pent…
1st a caveat that I’m not an expert in Australian #Pentecostalism or on #Hillsong, & I’d welcome comments/thoughts from experts/insiders there. So on to my questioning: Is Hillsong “Pentecostal”? Colloquially, sure, it’s Pentecostal-Charismatic & emerged out of Pentecostalism. 2/
In 2018, Hillsong announced that it was forming it’s own “denomination” in Australia hillsong.com/collected/blog… and officially separating from the Australian Christian Churches (the Australian branch of the World Assemblies of God Fellowship), a global Pentecostal denomination. 3/

This is such an important analytical question abt the #AsburyRevival /#asburyrevival2023: Why are both left-leaning & right-wing Evangelicals eager to endorse it? I’ve been puzzling over it & have a few thoughts (@BradleyOnishi & @StraightWhiteJC can speak for themselves). 1/
Truthfully, I was invited to write a 1000-word OpEd on the #AsburyRevival that I mothballed on Friday, bc I realized I don’t have a “take” yet on it. Or, rather, I have endless *takes* but no thesis. The events at AsburyU the past 2 wks have been an Evangelical Rorschach test. 2/
When I was still Evangelical, I inhabited left-leaning Evang spaces (InterVarsity & Fuller Seminary google.com/books/edition/…) & also many right-wing env’ts. We have to remember that left-leaning Evangs are still Evangelicals, & *revival* has a mesmerizing quality for Evangs. 3/
