The GOP economic plan to this day embraces that same policy of tax breaks for the wealthy and cutting government spending at the expense of resources working Americans pay their taxes for. They increase defense spending but cut benefits for veterans.
They cut capital gains tax for the wealthy and cut SNAP benefits for the poor and hungry. The Democrats conceded in the 90s and transformed welfare to workfare, an obligation to work for a benefit you paid taxes for to receive on hard times.
Now they are proposing the same for Social Security Benefits: you have to go back to work to receive the benefits you already paid for when you were working. The greatest generation wasn’t great enough-get back to work Grandpa to get your fixed income check.
Most Americans share the belief that we can do both; pay or debts and reduce our spending. The two can coexist. Where we differ are our values. The GOP value a quid pro quo system of cutting taxes for the rich, while cutting benefits for veterans, the mentally ill, & the hungry
