So many people lack perspective and do not seek out avenues to broaden their perspective.

That is why such little things seem so insurmountable.

If your life seems tough or hard, it probably is with your limited perspective. If that's all you seek to understand, that's how it
will always be. You're blinded and held hostage to your lack of perspective.

When you find a broader perspective, especially that of others less fortunate, it may allow you to see past your pain and discomfort. It may allow you to recognize your "insurmountable issue" is
nothing more than a very minor, and very easily overcome setback.

I learned from a very snobbish girl in 8th grade that someone will always be better than me. What she didn't realize was I've taken that as a life lesson and internalized it.
Someone will always...

Be better.
Be smarter.
Be stronger.
Be more athletic.

But the inverse is true, someone will always be...

Less fortunate.
Poorer.
Missed more opportunities.
Face more obstacles.
It seems to me that many people claim to be victims of systems beyond their control. For some that might be true, at least to an extent. But many have come from a worse situation, poorer conditions they had no control over, and risen to be powerful human beings.
This all came from a tweet about making food for work versus buying, with some claiming the company should pay them to meal prep or buy them food. While others spoke of the 'Spoon Theory' and chronic illness.
Not that long ago, I'd wager 125-150 years ago, many people either put up with the pain/illness or died. The opportunities that we have today would probably lead many (from long ago) to believe we are making mountains out of mole hills.
While some disadvantages are by design, or remnants of a prior design, sulking under one's current perspective means they'll never find a way out.

Einstein famously said, "We can't solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them."
Seek out perspective from those you feel have moved past obstacles you feel are similar. And actually listen to them.

"People navigate to comfort, but I think you're built in the discomfort." ~ Sal Frisella

Seek to be uncomfortable with your personal status quo.
Seek out the different thinking.

Seek to minimize your obstacles and issues, or at least how to navigate with the discomfort they bring.

I deal with chronic back and pinched nerve pain. Wearing 30-40 lbs of gear, sitting in a squad car where I can't recline, it causes pain.
Like daily pain. Sometimes it's just a cramp feeling or twinge, other times I can't stand up straight and can barely walk.

When I begin to feel sorry for my circumstances I stop and remember that I can at least feel pain.

I can still stand.

That I'm not sequestered to
a wheelchair, or a bed, or need someone to handle my needs and functions as a human.

Suddenly my pain doesn't seem as bad, and I utilize stretching and therapy to fix it. Sure, I could lay prostrate in bed moaning for my wife to bring me things.
But my responsibility goes beyond my here and now.

That doesn't mean I don't take time to and for myself, but my responsibilities will always take precedent over my temporary wants/needs.
Seek a broader perspective.
Seek better understanding.
Seek out mentorship and resources.

Just seek to be a better you, unencumbered and uninhibited by your problems.

For the last 3 years people begged, bitched, pleaded, and voted in politicians that would move to a "restorative" justice model where low level offenses, no matter how egregious, would be cite and released.
Simple battery/assault is a low level, usually municipal offense that many places CANNOT jail for.

Yes I watched the video, and many times IF that guy was arrested and booked supervisors are calling and asking why we are wasting time on booking when we can cite and release.
THIS IS WHAT YOU WANTED.

THIS IS WHAT YOU VOTED FOR.

If you know my real name and Google it you can read all about my civil rights lawsuit against me, other officers and the city.

HOWEVER....
There's is video footage that completely refutes the claimant's story and exonerates myself and the other officers AND the city of Chicago. The original lawyers and law firm removed themselves from the lawsuit because the video is completely against the client.

HOWEVER...
Despite there being no case, and the individual lied on the lawsuit, the city attorney said they will pay out some "nominal" fee as a sorta "FU, go away" few because it is easier. Was told it would be sub $20k, probably around $10k.

I'm sure many of you have seen this photo, using it as a avatar or picture on posts on social media. But I'm sure many of you don't know but that was my actual star.

The one I had pinned on my chest when I graduated, the one I wore for years, and the one I turned in last year. Image
On Feb 13, 2018 I was in the locker room at the 011th district and getting dressed for work.

Far back row where we only had 1/2 a length of bench.

But I threw down my wallet, star, and phone like I always did. But that day I took a second glance.
You see that morning Commander Bauer was taken from us by a known, long-rap-sheet having felon. Which was the whole reason my band was even on my star to begin with.

But for whatever reason my star caught my eye and I took the photo.

COPA awarded Officer Ella French a 3 day suspension posthumously.

That's right, a deceased officer, one who died by the hands of a shitbag, has to lose 3 days of pay for... Checks notes... Late activation of a BWC and failure to complete a stop report as a PPO.
Before anyone's panties get in a bind, I'm not excusing the punishment for the error made.

This is another dog and pony show that a city agency can put on.

COPA can hold up stats and herald loudly "LOOKIE WHAT WE DID! WE SUSPENDED X AMOUNT OF OFFICERS FOR AN AVERAGE OF X DAYS"
When the lead suspect in a homicide or shooting case gets killed you know what happens?

The case gets closed due to the death. There is no one to prosecute, so it goes away.

I read something and it gave me pause for thought.

Essentially the statement was cops in high crime areas police different than low crime areas. It was stated in relationship to Adam Toledo's fatal encounter with a police officer, and made reference to if it was a different
neighborhood it wouldn't have happened.

I've seen renditions of the same idea revolve around racism, implicit bias, and these things only happen in Black and Brown neighborhoods. That if it was a Black or Brown cop the shooting wouldn't have happened.

I partially agree.
Having not come from the Garfield Park neighborhood and having limited knowledge of what the west side was, my interactions and experience of the area was as a cop.

The display of violence, struggles with substance abuse, mental health resources nearly non-existent, and poverty

I hear or read this a lot, that policing isn't as dangerous as a lumberjack or truck driver.

And it's TRUE. Per capita more people are killed in a myriad of different careers and professions and law enforcement.

But here is why things are very different...
Most police officers will go through a career never having been shot and killed. Many may never ever draw their weapon or need to use force. What separates out LE from other more "deadly" professions is the human aspect.

A logger goes to work w/ specific tools and a job to do
Somewhere they may have an awareness they could get hurt and killed. But their work is more predictable.

Trees, chain saws, and heavy equipment will operate in a certain way. The "deadly" part comes from failures or misjudgments. Tools break, trees fall the wrong way
