The Whump Wheel chose... Deafening!
---
Even at the distance he'd been standing, the shockwave of the blast had been enough to nearly knock him off his feet. As he regained his balance and looked around at the smoke and debris and wounded
and disoriented cultivators picking themselves up off the ground, he felt his stomach start to sink.
Nie Huaisang had been much closer to the center of the explosion, almost enough to take it point blank.
Where-
Using some spiritual power to help clear the smoke, he inhaled
sharply through his teeth when he saw Nie Huaisang -disheveled, filthy, and clearly injured, but *alive*- struggling to push himself into a sitting position.
He didn't remember even crossing the room. One moment he had spotted his sometimes-partner, the next he was gripping a
trembling shoulder. "Huaisang."
Nie Huaisang made no real response, other than to pat his hand.
As he raised his head, Lan Wangji could immediately see *why* he was being so quiet and docile.
A massive bruise covered most of the left side of his face, and he was bleeding from
his nose, which could mean a serious concussion...
And he was also bleeding from his *ears*, ruptured eardrums being the most likely culprit.
"Zhan... ge?" Nie Huaisang asked, dazed and like he was unsure the words were coming out right. Which made sense if he couldn't even
hear *himself* at the moment.
Lan Wangji very gently tipped the other man's chin up, trying not to aggravate his injuries. "Healer. Now," he said, using as few words as possible and making sure to clearly enunciate them so that Nie Huaisang could read them even with his
vision obviously not being clear.
Nie Huaisang blinked up at him, looking confused, then slowly caught up to what he'd said and nodded, the movement slow and careful. "Okay."
Lan Wangji removed his hand from the other man's shoulder, offering it, and only once Nie Huaisang was
holding on, grip weak and shaky, did he turn to flag down a medic.
He kept holding Huaisang's hand as they checked him over -concussion and ruptured eardrums, like he'd guessed, but also a fractured orbital socket, several fractured ribs, and a cracked sternum- and declared it
would be best to brace him and move him to the infirmary on a stretcher.
"We can only do so much without quick access to more equipment," one of the medics said.
"Fine. But I will go with him," Lan Wangji replied bluntly.
Seeing it wise not to argue, the woman nodded and waved
over one of the pairs of assistants with a stretcher.
"Zhan-ge?" Nie Huaisang asked again, still clearly dazed. "What's going on?"
"Infirmary," Lan Wangji said. Then much more gently added "I am not leaving you."
"Oh... okay. Thank you."
He managed the smallest smile at that
and gave Nie Huaisang's hand a comforting squeeze.
And he was still holding it when his brother arrived and came to the infirmary to check on them.

The snake yao was bigger than him, but also more slow moving and much dumber. Once Zhuzhi-lang had finished biting it
full of holes and then tearing it to fine shreds, he abandoned the corpse and rushed back over to the human curled up on the ground.
Nie Huaisang's breathing had started to turn into shallow, desperate gulps for air and sweat was pouring from his skin even as he shivered.
The area around his neck and shoulder had turned a disgusting purple-green-black color with spreading threads of black where the venom had leeched under his skin.
Seeing it, Zhuzhi-lang momentarily wished he'd made the yao suffer longer. But no, that would have cut the time they

Though he still had to keep quiet enough not to draw attention to himself, Mo Xuanyu made his way through the halls as quickly as he could.
Even though Nie-xiong always forgave him when it happened, he *hated*
it whenever his... his *"lessons"* made him late for their usual appointment for tea.
And it wasn't just for the fact that meeting with Nie-xiong meant much more food than he usually got for a meal. He genuinely adored Nie-xiong's company, and Nie-xiong genuinely seemed to like
him as well.
*Him!*
Red-faced, and not just from having to cross the grounds of Koi-tower so quickly, he skidded to a halt in front of Nie-xiong's guest room and knocked.
"Come in," came the reply from inside.
Nie-xiong's voice sounded weirdly thin and exhausted, and

The Whump Wheel chose... Burned!

The plan had seemed sound when it was made.
The younger disciples would use flares to drive the creature into the clearing where he and the older disciples were waiting, and then he would use Zidian to snare
it so the disciples would have an easier time to kill it.
And, at first, everything had gone as expected.
What they hadn't been expecting was how much the creature could still thrash even in Zidian's coils.
What they hadn't been expecting was that one of the juniors would
attempt to help kill it faster by flinging one of the unused flares at it.
And what they *definitely* hadn't expected was that the combination of the two would send the lit flare directly at *Nie Huaisang*, who had attempted to dodge it only to be struck in the back, igniting
While the Nie sect heir was just as prone to chasing birds and finding interesting spots to paint in Koi Tower as he was at home, Jin Guangyao was... concerned.
There had been *certain things* said during dinner that had his well-honed instincts on alert.
Pressing his mouth into a thin line, he set off to check the usual places.
When he spotted familiar green and gold robes near the lotus pond his brother had built for Jiang-guaniang,
he almost let out a sigh of relief-
-and then he realized something was very off.
Nie Huaisang was slumped against the back of the bench, his arms folded against his stomach and his knees drawn up. As Jin Guangyao got closer, he could see the other young man was shivering

Considering it was both his first public appearance since the funer- *his ascension*, **and** the first inter-sect conference since the same,
Nie Huaisang was holding up surprisingly well under the scrutiny of the other sects. He was still pale and underweight from his period of mourning and he seemed to still be somewhat mentally distant -never *quite* looking *at* anyone, just the space they were occupying-
but he had participated in all the formal introductions and the gift-giving to the hosting Jin sect and even the required toasts near-flawlessly.
After months of checking in on his mental and emotional state, it seemed Jin Guangyao had been overly concerned.
