This is why I can't stand Kyle Larson. We all know why he "sat out" for a season as Fox put it. We all know why he gained so many fans when he returned.
He bears responsibility for the resurgence of openly racist NASCAR fans:
Larson's usage of the n-word, regardless of context, made it more acceptable (in the eyes of conservative fans) to be more openly racist. Then, months later George Floyd was murdered and the noose incident occurred.
It was the perfect cultural storm for racist fans to be louder.
It's no secret most racist Bubba haters on Twitter have Larson all over their profiles. It's no secret most of his fans came AFTER he returned to NASCAR.
He made the right PR decisions to return. He "did the work," so to say.
He also never denounced the racist fans he gained.
Kyle Larson never came out and said, "The fans I've gained since coming back who said, 'I was thinking it, and then you said it! (As Bill Burr said)' are wrong, and I don't want them."
He GLADLY accepted the racist fans when they came. His family profits off of them.
It's made worse by the fact that Larson and Bubba Wallace have known each other for years. Then Bubba turned him into the wall this year, and things came to a head once again.
Bubba clearly doesn't always help his own cause, but that doesn't justify it.
It's wrong. It's two-faced. Worst of all, it shows that Kyle Larson has learned nothing from the fiasco. The consequences for his actions were a vacation and an upgrade to the best car in the field.
Once he returned, he shed any layer of learning or empathy he might have had.
