In 2020, @ConservationOrg launched the Mantalingahan Landscape Conservation Project, a five-year effort to restore and protect the Mount Mantalingahan landscape, which is located on the Philippine island of Palawan. conservation.org/corporate-enga…
Palawan has the most mangrove cover in the Philippines, spanning nearly 60,000 hectares. These mangroves buffering coastal communities from storm surges, are nurseries for marine species, support local food security, & absorb & store enormous amounts of climate-warming carbon.
Only an estimated 430-750 Philippine cockatoos are believed to remain in the wild. The Mantalingahan Landscape supports healthy mangroves that are essential for this large parrot, as well as many other species, making it one of the most important bird habitats in the Philippines.
The Palawan Forest Turtle is a Critically Endangered species found only in Palawan. These turtles are highly sensitive & require intact forest to survive. For much of the 20th century, the species was not seen in the wild, until they were officially rediscovered in 2004.
The Palawan pangolin, known locally as balintong, is a reclusive & gentle animal found only in Palawan. The species is considered Critically Endangered & its continued survival depends on reducing illegal poaching & protecting forests such as those in the Mantalingahan Landscape.
Conservation International is proud to share an intimate portrait of the elusive and rare wildlife of the Philippines, thriving in their natural habitats. #BiodiversityDayconservation.org/projects/photo…
