My book is here!

In the UK, women of #bangladeshi background experience some of the highest levels of employment disadvantage, although participation in #HE is increasing. I wanted to understand more about these inequities & the role of #class #ethnicity and #gender

🧵👇 ImageImageImage
Ch 1 outlines the history of Bangladeshi migration to the UK & current employment and education inequities, and describes the research aims and methods
Ch 2 presents #Bourdieu's theory of practice as sociological method foregrounding the relational nature of social inequities & mutual interplay of structure/agency - draws on Diane Reay, @bevskeggs, @ingram_nicola, Louise Archer, @DerronWallace, @NicolaRollock, @M_Franceschelli
Ch 3 explores participants' career aspirations - like work from others as @JonRainford & @DrNeilHarrison it challenges policy discourses on raising aspirations while showing how unequal access to relevant econ, social & cultural resources shapes expectations, decisions & pathways
Ch 4 engages with work from @TariqModood, @M_Franceschelli & Louise Archer & argues that participation in HE is sustained through family practices and diasporic discourses which build on individual and collective experiences to instil the value of education & social mobility
Ch 5 looks at participants' HE decisions & experiences - it shows that decision-making takes place in a context characterised by highly unequal opportunities and evidences how high-ranking institutions perpetuate class and ethnic inequities as well as these women's resistance
Ch 6 turns to class identities & what it means to be Bangladeshi, Muslim & British - similar to work from @DerronWallace & @NicolaRollock, it shows that the co-construction of class & ethnicity in common imaginaries + racial discrimination problematise middle-class identification
This chapter also evidences how intersecting racialised & classed hierarchies of status can have a detrimental influence on self-esteem and lead to self-distancing from one's ethnic group, although awareness of racialised inequities can lead to a re-evaluation of one's background
And finally, a big thank you to all those who have made this possible 💚 Image
