O’BRIEN TO UPS: YOU SUCCEED BECAUSE OF PEOPLE — DON’T FORGET THAT

After a 13-hour day — at the bargaining table & in subcommittee meetings — the @UPS #Teamsters National Negotiating Committee ended Tues. with a sharper focus on forcing UPS to make more progress on key proposals. Image
#Teamsters spent hours throughout the day pushing back on UPS's attempts to maintain the status quo or weaken worker protections in its Surepost program. Article 26 of the Nat'l Master Agreement outlines UPS’s eligibility to ship smaller packages of specific weight/size via USPS. Image
Several rounds of #Teamster proposals were exchanged to push UPS to put more boxes back on union package cars and commit to regular testing of the very technology the company uses to redirect volume. Image
"These company men should change the name of Surepost to 'Goal Post' because of how often UPS keeps trying to move them. It shouldn’t take the better part of a day to convince UPS to become a more responsible employer," said #Teamsters General President Sean M. O'Brien. Image
"Despite UPS’s best efforts to run in place, the Teamsters are making progress. We will ensure Surepost doesn’t hurt union work."

"We will make sure UPS is never allowed to unilaterally implement technology that diminishes Teamster jobs," said O'Brien.
On Wed. morning, the #Teamsters’ committee expects a revised proposal from UPS on additional technologies.

Teamster subcommittees will continue to work on language on safety & health measures, protecting feeder drivers & creating more full-time jobs for part-time workers. ImageImageImage
"Over the next 5-year agreement, we’re only interested in making sure our members at UPS are satisfied, respected, and protected when they show up to keep this company on top," O'Brien said. Image
"UPS grows because of its people. Our committee was happy to remind the company of that today. It’s the #Teamsters, not the machines & not the greed that keep the money coming in the doors. People make UPS successful. This corporation needs to acknowledge it and respect it." ImageImageImage
Both sides will be back at the table at 9 a.m. on May 24.

Following a legislative session where he vetoed a multitude of bills that would have improved worker’s rights, safety & financial security, #Teamsters are condemning CA Gov. @GavinNewsom for making life harder for working families in the nation’s most populous state. #1u🧵1/20
“The way Newsom reacted to a majority of the pro-labor bills that came before him this year is something that we'd expect from a governor elected with support from the Koch brothers – not someone who received support from labor,” said Jason Rabinowitz, Joint Council 7 Pres. 2/20
“Being a pro-union governor doesn’t mean you stand with us when it’s convenient. It means you stand with organized labor when it counts, which is when it’s time to sign pro-union legislation.” 3/20

AT UPS, AND IN THE U.S., PART-TIME POVERTY DOESN’T WORK

Receiving near-minimum wage in many parts of the country, part-time workers at UPS are the most at risk in the company’s workforce of being exploited and cast aside.
#1u #HotUnionSummer
This reality was made no clearer than by the actions of @UPS negotiators during nearly 20 hours of contract negotiations with the #Teamsters that ultimately collapsed in the early morning of July 5.
Most shamelessly, the corporation’s final move was to put forth an unofficial offer that, had the #Teamsters accepted it, would have forced scores of part-time workers at @UPS to be left behind.

AFTER MARATHON SESSIONS, UPS NEGOTIATIONS COLLAPSE

Around 4AM, UPS walked away from the bargaining table after presenting an unacceptable offer to the Teamsters that did not address members’ needs. The UPS Teamsters Nat’l Negotiating Committee unanimously rejected the package
Following marathon negotiations, UPS refused to give the Teamsters a last, best, and final offer, telling the union the company had nothing more to give.
“This multibillion-dollar corporation has plenty to give American workers — they just don’t want to,” said Teamsters General President Sean M. O’Brien. “UPS had a choice to make, and they have clearly chosen to go down the wrong road.”
