I just finished reading “How to Talk So Little Kids Will Listen.”
There is no perfect way to parent. BUT having tools or strategies has been helpful for me. I need a plan. 🤣😜😭
Here are my Top 10 Takeaways from the book:
1️⃣ Respect Their Feelings: Acknowledge your child's emotions and validate their feelings. When you listen and empathize with their experiences, it helps them feel understood and builds trust.
2️⃣ Use Descriptive Praise: Instead of generic compliments, offer specific and descriptive praise. This encourages positive behavior and boosts their self-esteem. Highlighting their efforts and achievements will motivate them to continue doing well.
3️⃣ Offer Choices: Give your child opportunities to make decisions within appropriate boundaries. Offering choices empowers them, fosters independence, and helps develop problem-solving skills.
4️⃣ Engage in Playful Communication: Incorporate playfulness into your conversations. Using humor and fun language can diffuse tension, make communication enjoyable, and create a positive connection with your child.
5️⃣ Set Clear Boundaries: Clearly define expectations and limits. Children thrive when they have consistent guidelines. Communicate rules calmly and respectfully, explaining the reasons behind them when possible.
6️⃣ Problem-Solve Together: Involve your child in finding solutions to conflicts or challenges. Encourage their input and brainstorm ideas together, teaching them valuable problem-solving skills and fostering a sense of responsibility.
7️⃣ Active Listening: Truly listen to your child when they speak. Give them your full attention, maintain eye contact, and show genuine interest. Active listening builds trust and strengthens your bond with your little one.
8️⃣ Use "I" Statements: When expressing your own feelings or concerns, use "I" statements to avoid blaming or accusing your child. This helps them understand the impact of their behavior without feeling attacked.
9️⃣ Offer Empathy and Support: When your child is upset or facing challenges, provide a comforting and supportive presence. Show empathy, offer hugs, and let them know you're there for them, creating a safe space for emotional expression.
🔟 Practice Self-Care: Taking care of yourself is essential. When you prioritize self-care, you can approach parenting with patience, understanding, and a calm demeanor, creating a positive atmosphere for both you and your child.
Hope these help! We’re all getting a little better every day.
