Outside observers may be confused at the silence from Pakistan's liberals at the unprecedented persecution of @ImranKhanPTI and his followers.
Here is a thread with 7 reasons why the, so-called, champions of democracy, relish and cheer the purge of Imran Khan's supporters 🧵
1. They loathe his popularity. Imran Khan is the most popular leader in the country's history.
Unlike his opponents, he did not rely on feudal serfdom, military duty or bribery to garner his support. His honest 27-year political struggle sowed the seeds of love in the people.
2. They loathe Imran Khan for his embrace of an identity they try their best to shed.
IK is unapologetically Pakistani, whilst they spend most of their lives trying to remove anything that might reveal their identity.
3. They hate his adoption of a religion they so despise. Islam, for them, is something that should be eradicated from Pakistan.
His constant references to God, his efforts against Islamophobia, his promotion of classical religious education - all steps too far for them.
4. They hate that he turned his back on western stardom and riches (a fate they so crave).
They spend most of their time trying to gain validation from the West, where their world view was born. For them, anyone whose life trajectory goes from West to East - must be mad!
5. They hate that he has embraced his mother tongue. Despite his Oxford education and his time in the West - he still only speaks Urdu.
Urdu burns the tongues of these liberals, who strain their necks and tongues to speak Eng in the most artificial aristocratic accent possible.
6. They hate how close he has come to achieving the fate they claimed to want.
For years, they have discussed the overreach of the military. Now that there is a real chance to alter the political dynamic in Pakistan, they remain silent and cheer the torture of his supporters.
7. They hate that, whether it was in cricket, philanthropy or in politics, those that ridiculed him at the beginning were not laughing at the end.
