As Lee Hyunsung stretched his arms, making sure he was properly warmed up, he looked around at his friends who were also participating in the hunt this year.

There was Sun Wukong and of course, Yoo Joonghyuk.

For years, their circle had avoided the hunt for as long as they could.

After all, the idea of literally hunting down their future mate felt barbaric. Especially when the chase brought a certain thrill, a hunger that could cloud an alpha's judgement.

Though, Lee Hyunsung that the real reason why they all had held out for as long as they could was something else.

Their friend group had another member, an omega named Kim Dokja.

And they all wanted him. How could they not?

Kim Dokja seemed like an innocent person when anyone first saw him.

His pale skin, skinny arms and his thin waist practically made to be held, made him look so frail.

Him being an omega didn't really help matters.

And while he did have an innocent side to him, he was also mischievous.

Lee Hyunsung could no longer count the number of times he had tricked people out of sheer pettiness.

If there was one thing Kim Dokja hated, it was when people looked down on him.

When they did, he always got retribution and they were none the wiser.

But while on the outside, Kim Dokja was the perfect conman, on the inside, he was scared.

Lee Hyunsung knew because he had seen the vulnerable side of his friend.

Whenever the two of them spent time alone, he could see Kim Dokja's worries. Especially when it came to the hunt.

He didn't want to be strapped down with an alpha who only made him miserable.

So, Lee Hyunsung wanted to protect him. He wanted Kim Dokja to be his mate.

And maybe he was cheating a bit. After all, he had seen his Kim Dokja's plans to escape being caught.

Plans that the others knew nothing about.

It was unfair and clearly gave Lee Hyunsung an advantage.

But as he had been told. This was war and he couldn't afford to play fair.

So as the sirens rang, indicating the start of the hunt, with one nod to his friends, he took off, knowing where Kim Dokja was.

Every year, the hunt took place near a secluded mountain side where the forest was so thick, you could be lost in there for days.

This made the terrain challenging and the hunt a hassle. But there was a reason for that.

An alpha could only get a mate if they were worthy. And getting through the forest was part of the challenge.

While everyone headed for the mountain, ready to start climbing, Lee Hyunsung headed downwards to the nearby river.

That's where Kim Dokja would be according to his plans.

It was a smart move. After all, not many people would expect him to be there since the majority of the omegas preferred to hide in the higher ground.

The closer Lee Hyunsung got to the river, the more he could smell it in the air, Kim Dokja's sweet scent.

It grew stronger and stronger until he reached the riverside. But there was no sign of the omega.

Using his sense of smell, Lee Hyunsung tried to find Kim Dokja in the darkness.

But just as he started to look around, something wrapped around his leg, tightly.

Before he knew it, Lee Hyunsung was in the air, hanging upside down.

Trapped.

"Dokja! Dokja-ya!" He called out but there was no response.

There was no sound at all. And Lee Hyunsung realized, Kim Dokja had never been here.

He had been set up from the very beginning.

Now, he had no choice but to hang in there, hoping that the others were fooled as well

Everyone had always known that Sun Wukong was interested in Kim Dokja.

That wasn't a secret. For anyone except Kim Dokja.

While the omega was smart in other aspects of his life, he could be painfully dense when it came to matters of the heart.

But maybe there were some benefits of Kim Dokja's denseness.

For one, he didn't get awkward around Sun Wukong and actually opened up to him, sharing his fears about the hunt.

Fears that convinced Sun Wukong that he should be the one to claim Kim Dokja.

He had always wanted to do that. But the fact that the omega could open up to him just solidified his decision.

Thankfully, Sun Wukong had the chance to peek at Kim Dokja's plans. So he was a step ahead.

He wasn't going to underestimate the omega though. After all, Kim Dokja always had a bag of tricks up his sleeves.

So following the instructions in the plan, he arrived at the base of the mountain.

Around him, he could hear some alphas growling, giving into their animal nature, followed by the sound of footsteps.

The hunt was going on in full swing so Sun Wukong had to hurry.

Distinguishing Kim Dokja's scent from the others was an easy task. After all Kim Dokja was unique. One of a kind in every aspect.

Following it, Sun Wukong came across a trap. One that would have him hanging in the air for hours.

A trap set up by Kim Dokja.

He could have easily avoided it. But Sun Wukong couldn't help himself.

He activated it nonetheless and quickly dodged before he could get caught in the net.

At the same time though, another trap was activated (as expected) and Sun Wukong pulled himself up onto a tree branch to avoid an incoming tree log.

He chuckled to himself, wondering how Kim Dokja had managed to set things up so well.

But while having a bit of fun, Sun Wukong forgot that just as he knew Kim Dokja, Kim Dokja knew him as well.

So he should have expected the next trap. He should have known it wouldn't end so easily.

But he was having fun. So when the next tree log hit him right in the head,

all he could do was pass out.

His last thought being that there was no way he could claim Kim Dokja now.

As Yoo Joonghyuk watched Sun Wukong and Lee Hyunsung rush into different directions with a lot of determination, he sighed.

Usually, the two of them would be a bit confused and think deeply before making such quick decisions.

The fact that they knew exactly how to start and where to go meant that they had been fooled.

Kim Dokja had laid out a well thought out trap and they had fallen for it.

They all knew how Kim Dokja's mind worked. But he also created situations where he appeared weak and vulnerable.

Situations that he had been planting since they were in middle school.

Yoo Joonghyuk had noticed the pattern after Kim Dokja manifested as an omega.

He could have told the others but he decided not to. Because unlike them, he wanted Kim Dokja even back then.

Whether he was an alpha, beta or omega didn't matter.

The only thing Yoo Joonghyuk cared about was having Kim Dokja in his arms.

So now, instead of following any plans that Kim Dokja had 'accidentally' left out for him to see, Yoo Joonghyuk used his knowledge of the omega.

While she was just as office worker, Lee Sookyung had connections.

Especially with the people who organised the hunt. She had always been a sharp woman so there was no way she didn't get access to this location before the hunt took place.

If that had happened, Kim Dokja would have ample time to set up his traps. To plant his scent in different places to lead everyone on wild goose chase.

And knowing him, unlike most omegas, he'd come for the hunt with scent blockers.

Kim Dokja wouldn't just accept anyone as his mate. If they wanted him, they had to prove their worth.

They had to play his game and win.

So instead of rushing into the forest, Yoo Joonghyuk headed towards a nearby cave.

Because just like Kim Dokja, he had done his research on the terrain.

The cave was near the boundary of the hunt's location. Too close to the edge for most alphas to visit. And too hidden for anyone to find it easily.

There weren't a lot of mentions of it online either.

Just the way Kim Dokja had been preparing for this day for years, so had Yoo Joonghyuk.

While he didn't know where the hunt would take place, he had visited several possible locations and explored them thoroughly.

So he knew where the cave was and how to find it.

He also knew that would be the best place for Kim Dokja to hide.

There was always the chance of Kim Dokja never finding the cave itself. But Yoo Joonghyuk knew he would be there.

After all, he had been planting the seed for years. Showing Kim Dokja pictures of places he had explored, hidden gems he had found.

Kim Dokja had always taken an interest in the latter. Though he knew what Yoo Joonghyuk was doing.

But the idea was there nonetheless.

So, as he stepped through the cave opening, there Kim Dokja was, huddled in the back with a torch and a book in his hand.

"You found me," he said, calmly without looking at Yoo Joonghyuk.

"Because you wanted me to," Yoo Joonghyuk shrugged.

"Oh? Are you sure about that."

"Positive."

Clicking his tongue, Kim Dokja shook his head, "You shouldn't be so overconfident Joonghyukie. What if I run?"

Seeing his defiance, Yoo Joonghyuk's alpha purred.

"Try," he warned. "But know that when I chase you down, which I will, I won't be so nice."

"When have you ever been nice?" Kim Dokja rolled his eyes as he got up.

The first thing he did was safely put his book away.

Then, as he stood up straight, his eyes first went for the entrance.

But Yoo Joonghyuk knew he wouldn't run. Because he was exactly where he wanted to be.

So instead of blocking the exit, he started walking towards Kim Dokja.

But instead of being his usual cocky self, Kim Dokja let out a shaky breath as Yoo Joonghyuk caged his against a wall.

"We should probably help Lee Hyunsung and Sun Wukong after this," he said, trying to change the topic as he placed his hands on Yoo Joonghyuk's chest.

But he didn't push him away.

"Stop trying to distract me," Yoo Joonghyuk said as he leaned in.

"I just want you to be sure," Kim Dokja whispered.

"I have been for years."

Hearing that, Kim Dokja bared his neck, his heart hammering in his chest.

And Yoo Joonghyuk's chest rumbled with happiness.

With one simple bite, Kim Dokja was his forever.

He had proven himself worthy.
