🧵On 26 May 2023, students at @NewRoadsK12 —the California elementary school @TheAmandaGorman attended—presented a reading of The Hill We Climb in response to the removal of the book from school library shelves in Miami-Dade County in Florida.
Eleven students took to the stage to read the text of The Hill We Climb to an audience of 300.

During the event, students also shared their personal thoughts on book banning and the impact Amanda Gorman’s poem has had on their lives. (2/3)
The event was a powerful display of solidarity with @NewRoadsK12 alumna @TheAmandaGorman—and showcased the school's ongoing support of literary freedom.

California Governor @GavinNewsom tweeted his support, stating simply: “Freedom to read.” (3/3) #FreedomToRead

... When you restrict or diminish access to a book, that’s a ban.

Moving the book to middle school shelves means elementary students can’t or won’t get it.

Their access has diminished. (2/x)
The Hill We Climb was widely praised and read at a Presidential Inauguration.

It was moved to middle schools along with @OhReallyRio's The ABC’s of Black History.

This cannot be separated from the wider movement to restrict books by Black authors and about Black history. (3/x)
