When I'm presenting on Independent Charismatics & the Trump Admin, I frequently get asked (by ppl w/ little experience in this arena): Why does anyone join these churches? Well, I strongly recommend watching the new FX #SecretsOfHillsong documentary. 1/
The series (3 of 4 episodes have aired so far) tracks the implosion of #Hillsong, a globally networked, massive Independent Charismatic church originating in Australia. themonthly.com.au/issue/2023/feb… @ellehardy has also done some excellent journalism on Hillsong's inner workings. 2/
While my own research focuses on the New Apostolic Reformation – another influential Independent Charismatic network that was instrumental to the US Capitol Riot – the Hillsong documentary is great at capturing the magnetic qualities of these churches. icjs.org/charismatic-re… 3/
Imagine showing up for a church service that feels more like a fluid rock concert – an immersive, cathartic musical experience that mixes spiritual uplift with emotive styles of music perfected over the past half-century within the Independent Charismatic sector. 4/
Independent Charismatic churches live on the cutting edge of religious technology - flashing screens, fog machines, commercialized songs, the coolest hipster worship leaders & pastors who dress like rock stars, & preaching that speaks to human passions & desires. 5/
What Indep Charismatics are doing today globally parallels the new technologies revivalist preachers of the 2nd Great Awakening like Charles Finney unleashed in the 19th cent: persuasive preaching, personal testimonies in services, captivating music. 6/

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_G…
Now add into this a layer of supernatural inward experiences that offer to epistemically bolster the indiv believer, things like speaking in tongues, receiving words of prophecy, healings, & the feeling that you are part of an extraordinary global outpouring of God's spirit. 7/
All of these together contribute to the formula for why Independent Charismatic ministries are growing gangbusters around the globe (h/t Todd Johnson @drtoddmjohnson who has done incredible work categorizing & contextualizing this segment of Global Christianity). 8/ Image
My one mild critique of the Hillsong documentary (thus far) is that the journalist narrators frequently confuse the categories of "progressive" vs. "cool/savvy." They seem mystified that conservative Xns can be so technologically/culturally adept & hip. 9/
If your assumption is that all right-wing, reactionary Christians are sitting around in old church basements complaining about their loss of power, let me disabuse you of that notion. Conservative theology can mix quite well with exciting music & celebritydom. 10/
So watch the Hillsong documentary & keep your eyes on the Independent Charismatics. They are the vanguard of the growth of global Christianity, & they're also the bleeding edge of global (& American) Christian nationalism. washingtonpost.com/made-by-histor… @JoaoB_Chaves 11/

For all the silly drama with Twitter rumors about Sean Feucht & Lauren Boebert's affair (show me a shred of evidence!), I think the more significant Feucht-related development this week was his mostly overlooked effort to create a new prophetic meme: facebook.com/sean.feucht/vi… 1/
Worth noting: Charisma News (Steve Strang's Charismatic media empire & the major "news" organ of the Independent Charismatic world) picked up Feucht's claims about an open vision regarding personal revival & wrote it up as an article: charismamag.com/propheticreviv… 2/
I've argued before that these "prophetic memes" are the coin of the land in Independent Charismatic celebritydom. All the prophets & prophetic people are trying to gain fame through their oracular insights into God's mind. podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/cha… 3/

It's an important but thorny question from @KnudstrupJulie as to whether to call Bethel Church in Redding part of the New Apostolic Reformation. The waters have been muddied by the dynamic of critics very broadly applying the label "NAR" hither & yon. Here are my thoughts. 1/
I'll also note that I realize my approach is out of step with many other NAR watchers, so I'm ready for my rhetorical drubbing... First, the term "NAR" (Why do people say "nahr"?) is highly polarizing today, so those who might have self-applied it a decade ago avoid it now. 2/
On the question of Bethel Redding, this is even more complicated by the popular but disjointed labeling done by Pivec & Geivett that attempts to put Bethel at the heart of the NAR, so that Bethel's ideas/practices become definitional to the NAR. 3/

For those tracking the New Apostolic Reformation (& Charismatic/Apostolic-Prophetic/Fivefold Christianity as a whole), I commend this article by @reb_hopkins (in @reachjulieroys) about abusive leadership at the former Anaheim Vineyard. julieroys.com/exclusive-form… 1/
For those not tracking the ins & outs of this, here's a quick refresher: The Anaheim Vineyard was John Wimber's church & the iconic, flagship Vineyard church during Wimber's career. Some Vineyard folk used to affectionately call it "the mothership" mainandplain.com/wimber-me-how-… 2/
Wimber, a former member of the Righteous Brothers band, was a guiding light in the Charismatic world of the 1970s to 1990s. In Charismatic Revival Fury, I show how he taught w/ C. Peter Wagner at Fuller Seminary, & midwifed Wagner's late-career pivot. podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/cha… 3/

These comments from Roger Stone at the Pastors for Trump/ReAwaken event at Trump's Doral resort this week are very important. For those who don't speak "Independent Charismatic," allow me to translate. Stone is claiming a prophetic destiny based on a prophecy from Kim Clement. 1/
Kim Clement passed away in 2016 (here's a tribute from the Christian music artist Carman facebook.com/CarmanLicciard…), but before that, he was the *original* Trump prophet. He was a South African Charismatic prophet, with a real dramatic flair - synth music, rambling, etc. 2/
Clement was part of Cindy Jacobs' Apostolic Council of Prophetic Elders, a core New Apostolic Reformation institution that C. Peter Wagner superintended. elijahlist.com/words/display_… He rubbed shoulders with & was close to Lance Wallnau, Dutch Sheets, Lou Engle – the whole crowd. 3/

I was happy to be interviewed, & I think @7im did a very fair job of writing about the complex case of Derrick Peterson, a former sheriff deputy & candidate for Portland's school board who was commissioned as an apostle by Ché Ahn in 2020.
rollingstone.com/politics/polit… 1/
Ché Ahn also listed Peterson as an advisory board member at 1Race4Life, an anti-abortion/racial-reconciliation org that he founded in 2020 after George Floyd's murder. web.archive.org/web/2021120511…. 2/
Last week Oregon Live ran a story where Peterson downplayed his 2020 apostolic commissioning & said he "is not affiliated" with 1Race4Life. oregonlive.com/education/2023…. Since then he was removed from Ahn's site & the 1Race4Life site has gone dark. What is going on here? 3/

Those who follow intellectual/coalitional developments on the Religious Right should pay close attn to this strange essay by feminist Naomi Wolf brownstone.org/articles/have-… in which she endorses the worldview & teaching of Messianic rabbi/pastor Jonathan Cahn. Let me explain... 1/
If Jonathan Cahn isn’t on your radar, he should be. He is a leading “thinker” in the Independent Charismatic space, writing bestseller books interpolating Hebrew Bible narratives & prophecy into elaborate readings of contemporary American politics bethisraelworshipcenter.org/about%20Us/Abo…. 2/
In 2015, Charisma Magazine named Cahn one of the “40 Christian Leaders Who Radically Changed Our World.” charismanews.com/40-year-annive… Other named luminaries included Cindy Jacobs, Bill Hamon, (both key #NewApostolicReformation leaders), Pat Robertson, & Billy Graham. 3/
