China dominates 41% of the world's cobalt mining reserves & refines 73%. It also refines 95% of the worldβs manganese, 70% of the graphite, & 67% of the lithium.
With government support, companies are able to refine minerals at higher volumes and lower cost than elsewhere. 2/7
The cathode is the most important component of the battery. Until very recently, the most common cathode used a combo of nickel, cobalt, & manganese.
China has invested in a cheaper option using lithium iron phosphate (LFP), which already accounts for half of the market. 3/7
China has 99% of the world's LFP cathode production and 73% of its nickel, cobalt, and manganese (NMC) cathodes.
The USA produces 1% of NMC cathodes. The US is interested in the production of LFP, but needs help from Chinese companies, which have the knowledge. 4/7
Incentives for buying electric cars in China range from discounts on taxes, vehicle registration, preferential parking, and access to an extensive charging network. 5/7
From 2021β2022, worldwide sales of electric vehicles grew 55%, reaching 10.1 million units. China accounted for 59% (5.9 million) of these sales.
In second place is Europe, with a 26% share and 2.6 million units sold. 6/7
In the first quarter of 2023, China overtook Japan as the world's largest automobile exporter, registering a 58% year-on-year increase, adding 1.07 million units. The growth is largely due to exports to Russia. 7/7
China wants to have its own "Silicon Valley": it will build an international science and technology innovation complex in Beijing, and plans to complete it by 2025.

The government unveiled a "battle plan" to build the International Science and Technology Innovation Center to advance key fields such as low-carbon energy, space, life sciences, Earth research, and artificial intelligence. 2/8
By 2025, Beijing's high-tech industry is projected to have 260 R&D employees for every 10,000 workers. contributing more than 1.2 trillion yuan (US$170 billion) to the local economy, a 13% increase over 2022. 3/8
π¨π³πΊπΈ | US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen claims that China's "untying" would be "disastrous", while announcing that the Biden government is preparing a program to "restrict certain US foreign investments in specific sensitive technologies". π§΅1/5
In a speech at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies, Yellen said the US seeks a healthy, constructive, and fair economic relationship with China, and that sanctions against China are not intended to "stifle" the Chinese economy. 2/5
Saying one thing and doing another has become the US norm in relations with China, say experts according to the Global Times.
Biden is expected to sign an executive order in the coming weeks restricting investment in chips, artificial intelligence, and quantum computing. 3/5
Chinese scientists successfully test real-time wireless transmission using 6G technology for the first time. Although 6G cellular networks are far from becoming a reality, the experiment achieved a speed of 100GB per second in a 10GHz bandwidth. π§΅1/2
In the future it is expected that peak speeds using 6G will reach one terabit (1,000GB) per second; the technology used was terahertz waves, which allows more information to be transported at higher speeds. 2/2
π¬ π¨π³ | Boeing (US) has competed with Airbus in the Chinese market, but US government trade restrictions have made it difficult for the US aerospace giant to sell passenger aircraft, allowing Europeans to gain ground. π§΅1/5
In April, Airbus said it would double capacity at its A320 plane assembly plant in Tianjin, increasing its access to the world's second-largest aviation market as domestic travel in China begins to approach pre-pandemic levels. 2/5
China will buy 150 A320s and 10 A350-900s commercial aircraft from Airbus. The European company predicts that China's air traffic, over the next two decades, will grow by 5.3% annually, above the world average of 3.6%.
That would mean a demand for 8,420 aircraft by 2041. 3/5
The RMB 87.5 billion project will be 90% financed with a Russian loan repayable in 28 years, with a grace period of 10 years. π§΅1/2

π¦ π·| According to the latest findings of Chinese scientists, COVID is unlikely to originate from animals and was not present in the human population in Wuhan before December 2019. π§΅1/7
Analyzing over 1,300 environmental samples from the Huanan Seafood Market from Jan-Mar 2020, scientists found that the COVID strains present were almost identical to those found in people, indicating that the virus came from humans. 2/7
Furthermore, all of the 400 animal samples taken tested negative for COVID.
This is according to Tong Yigang, a dean at the Beijing Uni. of Chemical Technology & group leader of the Chinese Animals & Environment team of the WHO-China Joint Mission on COVID origin study. 3/7
